Disney-era Lucasfilm: Has access to the best artists in the industry that are obviously talented and passionate about what they do. Also Disney-era Lucasfilm: Ignores all their talent and makes the laziest decisions possible.
I'm still miffed that the Eclipse (Executor-class) didn't even make an appearance, despite being in First Order hands. Also the fact we didn't see any Starhawks despite them getting mentions at Jakku.
*internally cries* stormtroopers race to the hangar, in a futile attempt to reach starfighters and transports as the ship floods. eventually, they are all killed by the water
It's okay Resurgent, perhaps one day you will actually get sibling ships. For real though, they should have made new ships using concept art from TFA and TROS if for anything to actually give the FO a fleshed out navy instead of basically only having like half a dozen capital ship designs
I was thinking the same thing, I always liked Jerec's Super Star Destroyer, it kept the Imperial look but had a unique flavor, it would have been great as the new First Order flagship
Man the art books just tells us this is what the last movie could’ve have. Say what you want about TLJ, but it gave us two brand new antagonist ships and a star fighter with new vehicles. TROS had barely any new antagonist ships. Except a new fighter for kylo for some reason a knights of ren ship and tie dagger and a walker. Xyston isn’t new it’s just have beefy version of a mandator cannon which makes 0 sense in tech improvement.
TBH, TLJ's new ships almost all looked hideous. The resistance bomber is a pez dispenser with wings. The Dreadnought looked like a pizza slice with a wang stapled to the bottom. The resistance ski speeder is a jumbled mess even for a scrap ship. The resistance transport pod is at least not really seen head on much, but it really looks like a joke ship. At least snokes ship and the gorrila walkers looked kinda decent, but not remarkable. Actually almost all the Disney made ships look awful, with really messy or uninspired profiles. The only design I can think of that I actually found appealing of any of the new movies is the U wing, which both has a unique look and blends well with its older counterparts.
@@viperson9818 I mean sure, but they also stick out for looking ridiculous next to the classic counterparts they are flying around which makes them obnoxious in a different way.
2:43, The "mouth" on that Star Destroyer design strangely enough reminds me of the Malevolence. Also, a First Order Coruscant?! I would have loved to have seen Kylo there, sitting on a throne like he owned the place.
What if, instead of Kylo going to Mustafar to collect the Sith wayfinder, he travels to coruscant to collect the one in possesion of the emperor. That way we get an idea of live in the core under the rule of the First Order and Rey & friends could've gone to a much more interesting planet (Mustafar) to collect the second one. I realize that this doesn't allow for Jannah to appear of Kef Bir, but lets be honest with ourselves here. Jannah didn't impact the plot in any significant way. The 'big' duel could've also been on Mustafar (which might seem like fanservice) but Kylo dueling on top of a ruined castle that once belonged to the man he idolized for the past 2 movies would've a very powerful scene.
The third one looks gorgeous, it's a shame that it got ditched in favour of regular ISD designs, however the "grappler" SD concept looks more like a bootleg Harrower than anything Finally Kylo visiting the ancient Jedi temple on Coruscant could have developed his character so much, why did they choose to make him do a fetch quest instead?
Its likely the story group stepped in. In canon and legends the temple was turned into the imperial palace, which was presumably the turned into something else once the new republic stepped in
The Supremacy should’ve been Supreme Leader Kylo Ren’s flagship. Just like how the Executor was revealed in TESB and continued to show up in ROTJ. Just have it’s damaged wing be half rebuilt but the Supremacy itself still be operational (similar to the DS2). It would also show that the Holdo Manoeuvre wasn’t all that effective considering the Supremacy was still intact and easily fixable.
Prince how, just having a singular big ship isn't copying. I don't think anyone complained about the fact that the supremacy existed, just how it was used in film.
@@whitneylackenbauer9782 I'm just saying that a common critique of these movies is how unoriginal they are (which I agree with). What he's suggesting is that it is used the exact same way the Executor was used which would only amplify how unoriginal these movies are.
With much damage brought upon the Supremacy, it’s more likely undergoing top priority repairs somewhere in First Order space. Had it appeared in Ep 9 operational while undergoing repairs, it wouldn’t have made sense lore wise and would’ve been dumb production wise. Then again, they just took an Imp-I, slapped an unneeded planet killer gun on its underbelly, increased its size by 1.5 without accounting for armaments, interiors and all that, so nothing could get dumber than that.
The more i think about it, the more i think they ran out of time for this movie. No time for new ships, no time for a space battle... But hey, maybe Disney goes all George Lucas and re-animates everything when on DVD! XD
Story and everything is at least average. I liked it. What i hated about it was the lack of continuity, world building and logic. Hyperspace ramming is suddenly a thing. There are barely to no connections to the old Star Wars worlds exept some main characters and there are several instances that are not possible, like Rose ramming Finn in TLJ after she needed to turn around twice while he was charging.
Vaniellis I mean, I could see Kylo Ren wanting to *be* Supreme Leader while still focusing on his own more personal goals, and not actually having to lead.
Once they decided to have Palpatine come back the "Kylo is the Supreme Leader" plot point was doomed to be irrelevant, as Palpatine existing automatically makes the position merely that of a high level lackey.
I would have liked to see a dilapidated Coruscant, to show the consequences of the New Republic who shifted the political center of the galaxy away from it, so things just got worse since it’s difficult to support an ecumenopolis.
I wish we saw Colin Trevorrow’s Version of the Rise Of Skywalker. There were some great ideas like going back to Coruscant and the Resistance stealing a star destroyer from a shipyard.
Liam Walsh those are the coolest bits of his version for sure, but there was also loads of dumb stuff. It seemed really low stakes to me, at least how I heard it.
GetOffMy Account exactly! Pretty sure the tragedy of Darth Pelagius the Wise is pretty much universally liked by most if not all Star Wars fans. Why on earth was he gonna make it a different Sith Lord!?!
카일로 is the Korean way of spelling Kylo (phonetically) That is just an issue with the auto translate 지휘함 means flagship (or literally command ship) 디스트로이어 is destroyer spelt phonetically in Korean 2:56 Kylo's Flagship Ver 01 Doug Chiang (? It is phonetic so hard to tell what the English would be) 2:59 's Destroyer Ver 01 Jengkins (? It is phonetic so hard to tell what the English would be) 3:28 Kylo's Destroyer Ver 01 Jengkins (?)
I can't believe I had to scroll down this far to find a correction on Eck's assumption that 'Cairo' was a codename. L's and R's in Korean are often interchangeable. And I mean, even if you didn't know that...Cairo and Kylo sound so similar!
@@afteri75 To be fair the Korean for Cairo is 카이로 which is very similar The ㄹ character is used for both L's and R's but the general rule is that when you are trying to get the L sound you use two ㄹ's and the pronunciation kind of rolls over into an L so that is why Kylo has that extra ㄹ (카일로 "Ka il lo") as opposed to Cairo (카이로 "ka i ro"
Seeing as the "new" star destroyer are literally imperial class star destroyers blown up by 50% with a gun hanging out from under it i think it's safe to say the reason is nostalgia pandering.
TFA Special Edition: Since Kylo Ren is going to be redeemed as a hero in TROS, we can't have him kill Han Solo like that because that makes him to be a cold-hearted killer. So instead, Han activates the lightsaber first. :P
Evan Pan-Bao Nah, Kylo would listen to his father’s plea, stab him in cold blood, then lean over and whisper one word into his dying father’s ear: “Maclunkey.”
True, but the bigger question is: why didn’t they have a plan/end goal? You can have the greatest directors in the biz working for you, but it doesn’t mean jack if none of them can agree on where the films are going. Disney wanted to duplicate Marvel’s formula, and they’re paying for it because they don’t understand what made it work: every director knew where the story was going, and built their films based around that end destination. Just look at Endgame, the result of multiple films working together to create (IMO) a badass climax
@@incription Hardly, more like they optimized it to make money and it backfired. Rise of Skywalker is barely going to break a billion dollars worldwide, meaning even before you consider advertising costs (which often rival production costs these days), inflation and the growth of the movie industry Rise of Skywalker will still make less money than Revenge of the Sith, and after you factor everything in it will probably be the worst performing movie in the saga.
They did. Johnson was just fine. The problem was Abrams being a hack and giving into whiners. If Johnson made all 3 they would be far better as a result.
The third ship looks like a dagger, but in a good way. I think that thing would be terrifying to have coming your way. Especially with the slimmer profile. You might not realize just how big it is until it's far too late.
This entire trilogy is a lack of creativity, originality and a huge insult to the whole Star Wars Saga. Nothing more have to be said, as this video shows how Disney Star Wars doesn't care about trying. They do, and does it with the only intention to get money.
Which is sad because they've shown through the Mandalorian and Rebels that there is room for the Disney "merchandise everything" philosophy and move the needle. Alas, JJ Abrams cannot, it seems, make a good franchise movie on his own, he has to constantly quote better movies at you to ride their coattails.
8 had tons of creativity, alas, people whined something subversive requiring thinking was too hard so they got 7 version 2.0 (aka 9). Blame whiners, not Disney.
KuK137 There’s a difference with something subverting expectations and something completely shifting away and derailing the plot of a movie trilogy. If you can’t see that, you are the very fool whom you blame others to be.
This makes me hate Disney mis-management of this timeless brand even more. Also you are not alone in the hate of the Xyston class Eck. I would've liked to have seen ALL of these designs in the movie, at least once May the force be with you.
Asides from the end of Return of the Jedi, has Anakin’s force ghost ever been seen again in Legends? I know he appeared in front of Leia once begging for forgiveness but she rejected him, so he never appeared in front of her again. #askeck Video suggestion/request: X-83 Twintail vs. Tie Defender (Legends)
@@judeskater93 I think there's another part where Luke's ghost visits Cade and Anakin's ghost is just standing silently behind Luke. Then again it's been years since I read it so my memory is foggy.
I thought it was hilarious that the whole movie they kept saying, "Be proud of who you are" and things along those lines, then at the end, Rey Palpatine is asked who she is....... And at the end of a movie that beat it in to your head that you shouldn't be ashamed or run from your past, she responds, "Skywalker." I seriously never laughed so hard at a Star Wars joke.
The only way the Xyston would've worked if they were the same size as the ISD and just had an eclipse power level superlaser with the same charge up physics of the superlaser seen in TROS. Cause then it would make the 25K star destroyers the empire had being killed off/hidden away in such a short space of time make way more sense
If #3 was used, Disney could’ve said that the leftover parts from the MSD (there were a LOT) were used to create the new SSD, thus causing the obvious similarity.
My problem with the sequel's ship design is that they clearly DO know how to design ships and make really epic dogfights and space battles. The T-70 is a fucking fantastic design, probably the best looking Star Fighter i've ever seen. The Resurgent Class Star Destroyer makes perfect logical sense in-universe as the "next step" in ship design, and the actual design is really cool. The Mega-Class has a unique design and purpose that - while not handled well - was really cool for what it was. The various advanced Tie designs we see Kylo Ren use are all really well made. Even the minor changes, like the new A-Wings, SF Ties, the MC-85 etc are all really good. But there was nothing NEW in my opinion. Yes 90% their designs are amazing but when you don't have any NEW ships in prominent roles then it suffers drastically. The only really new ships we see are either destroyed within a few minutes or aren't shown off. They should've used a Starhawk instead of the MC-85 imo. Or even just some upgrades on some of the lesser known ships. Let's see some upgrades on the Raider Corvette or the MC-30. This is my problem with the entire trilogy, Everyone working on it clearly had potential. The writers, designers, music composers, artists, etc etc all created a lot of fantastic ideas for the sequels, but they let the side down in other areas. For every amazing ship, there's a not so great ship. For every amazing character, there's a not so great character. For every Resurgent we have a Xyston. For every Kylo we have a Hux.
in the sequel trilogy we got some cool ships. i liked the raddus and the resurgent class star destroyer improving on the ISD designs. But the bunker buster was just a cr-90 with a lot of after market parts to me. And the resistance fighters basically all the same as the last jedi, but different colors? Come on... why were they so lazy? I remember George Lucas said he always tried to bring something new to each movie.... ships, scenerey ect. I wish they didnt play it so conservatively with the new movies.
the First Order dreadnought kinda sucked yeah but that one plus the Supremacy were both super cool new ships introduced, I think the Supremacy was one of the coolest new ship designs in the sequel trilogy
@@Sam-ub8mx good call I think my brain conveniently skipped over that one and the resistance bomber. Maybe the backlash to those made them go conservative
It's really clear that only the writing and direction of the new trilogy was bad. Everyone else involved with the production was talented and full of great ideas.
Art Department: "Here's the new Star Destroyers you asked for JJ! We're very proud of them!" JJ: "Nah, not nostalgic enough. Member the original trilogy? Let's just use regular Star Destroyers and slap a cannon on it!" Art Department:"That's it?" JJ: "OH, and let's make them 50% bigger for no reason! See it's a completely different ship now, PERFECT! We're gonna save soooo much CGI money using the Rogue One ISD model! Aren't you proud of me Disney?" The sheer laziness of it all if mind-boggling. The movie would still be awful, but at least we would have had some cool new ships to geek out over.
I’d blame Disney more than I would JJ. The sequel trilogy was their darling, ofc they had to have direct control and say over it. Which is ironic bc it’s evident they didn’t roadmap the story at all.
Remember, it was a series made by committee. So they go by graphs and polls to determine what was popular, not what was a good idea. A project without focus or plan, just reactionary to the times.
Yep, and unfortunately their data on what's popular comes not from the majority of the moviegoing public (most of whom didn't really care one way or the other), but from the obnoxious minority of whiney internet manchildren who have a conniption fit if anything dares stray too far from the visual aesthetic of the OT.
It really wasn't though, there were lots of artists who worked hard on that movie. It sounds like there was a lot of behind the scenes stuff at Disney with people who very much were not artists interfering with the movie.
Original trilogy and prequels: every movie had new ships and vehicles. Disney: 30 years later in the Star Wars universe, everything is still x wing, tie fighter and star destroyer.
In terms of capital ship design? noooo the only new variant of anything we got in the entire sequel trilogy was the Tie Dagger. Such a lot of missed opportunities. Legacy Era had some of the best looking ships, especially the Indomitable. Love the scythe on it
This sorta makes me think Disney just gave up after Eight and wanted to just tied everything up in the easiest, laziest way possible in Nine and focus in on shows for their streaming service. Disney doesn't have to share profits with theaters with stream shows like the Mandalorian and all the characters they introduce in a end of a saga movie are basically tie ins for shows.
When I first thought that Palpatine found that huge amount of Imperial I Star Destroyers I was really excited for this movie but then I found out that it was a completely different model and I was instantly bored with it but then I found out that it was likely just an Imperial I with a cannon attached... I wonder how different the interior would be, interior is often not shown much with these larger ships...
What would have happened if UNSC had defeated he covenant forces and captured the forerunner fleet in Halo Wars instead of destroying the ships?. #askeck
Sin526 I’m hoping that around E3 or the launch of halo infinite he will do a lot of halo themed videos same way he’s done a lot of episode nine themed videos the last month. And that this idea is one he will do

The Third image is of the Indefatigable Class Star Dreadnought, the First Order descendent of the Executor class Super Star Destroyer. I think it’s very cool. In fact, in my own made up Star Wars Story, my main Villain’s flag ship is the Indefatigable class Star Dreadnought.
@@Section8Spectre He doesn't need your pity so keep your stupid ass comments to yourself. Fucking grow up, just because someone likes something different than u doesn't give u right to say shit.
That first one is interesting, almost a re-imagining of the fabled 'double-decker' from ages past. Though in seriousness, if I had a bunch of ISDs laying around and I had to make them into something useful on a budget, hear me out on this one. Take two ISDs, put them belly to belly. Yank out both ventral reactors and replace with one large reactor that's more powerful than the two combined. Make a superstructure to link the two hulls together and protect the new reactor. The remaining gap between the two hulls now gives you a very generous hangar space, perhaps even a berth for small frigates and corvettes to be refueled/repaired in zero-g. Relocate a few things (bridge, sensors, shield generators, guns) around for practical ergonomics, add a little point-defense, and viola, you're set.
The first design with the open "jaws" - would have been great as squadron command ships each armed with an axial super laser in the "mouth" - requiring some amazing flying/targeting to actually disable. Having them as element leads, and supported with resurgents / Xysthon class (de super-lasered) would have meant the continuation of threat within the movie. Esp if the jaws move. Could be a variety of superweapons carried - as it adds an element of uncertainty - giving every ship a super laser is kinda boring. The Resistance know they have to take out every ship. If they have to pry the jaws open first to see, that makes their job a lot trickier, as they could be risking precious starfighters for no reward. - or a cloud of tie fighters coming out of an extra hanger - or a battery of anti-starfighter missiles and turbolasers. (My inner evil genius, mwahaha!)
Number 3 is honestly the best, as it not only incorporates some cool elements, but it is also designed as to remind us of Kylo's greatsword-style lightsaber.
For Disney, they lack any type of imagination or originality when it comes to Star Wars. Why reinvent something for a new generation, when all they need to do recycle plots and do minimal redesigns from the OT and PT, then just watch as the cash cow gets fatter from the films and merchandise. And that's the thing about Disney these days: They can't create anything themselves unless it's a live-action remake, so they buy up other properties and boom...problem solved.
In a nutshell? Because there was no time to create the assets from the concept art. But the Rogue One Star Destroyer scan was lying around gathering cyberdust, so enlarge that by 20% and slap a gun underneath, BOOM, done, print it.
When the book comes out this March please make a video covering it. I find it amazing that there were some genuinely creative concept art for potentially cool star destroyers and other ships, but weren't made into the final film. Like...why? These were some cool-ass designs in the book and I'm pretty sure Palpatine would know how to make badass ships.
Post production was absolute hell in this movie. They had to finish the vfx in a fraction of the time Episode 7 and 8 required. This is why they reused assets like crazy. They were on a very strict deadline and just barely finished it on time to release in late 2019.
Wish one of these designs could haven been a first order flagship. But i think the zyston should have been larger, and fewer of them, making them command ships of isd1s and keep an retro Imperial aesthetic to keep them apart from the first order.
I think the Xyston should have been something more like the ship at 5:10, that way it keeps design ideas from the ISD, but has more unique elements as well. Also, I wish there had been some explanation as to where the Supremacy went because it was still mostly intact after Holdo's maneuver.
Honestly, I like the #2 for a Knight's of Ren flagship, and one of the others (leaning towards #3) for a First Order replacement to the Supremacy... Heck, could even justify the bridge as it was salvaged from the Supremacy.
Imagine the mouth of the first one lighting up green with a super lazer. From the back, accelerating toward the tip from both sides, then once the lazer hits the tip, holding it for 2 seconds.
At least the concept art considers the fact that no navy capital class ship flies or sails without support vessels. The First Order and Sith Fleets are just there for posing.
The resistance would have died at the beginning of TLJ if they had escorted the Dreadnought. Hell if Huxley had kept his ship within range of the Dreadnought, he could have used his main batteries to sweep the bombers away.
The second ship is super reminiscent of Sith Empire designs from The Old Republic. Also, after all these years, I still think that Hosnia should have been Coruscant instead. Just looking at it, it was a fairly obvious visual stand-in. The only thing missing was...meaning.
It would have been nice if things had been different with Episode IX, but I also understand why they went the way they did with it. So I'm not going to hate Episode IX, in fact I'd go as far as to say I love it. But I do agree it might have been better if it had been helmed differently. I would also say the same about Episode VIII, love it but could have been better.
About the third ship. It have a very similar look to the Battleship in IMPS ( Imperial Military Personal Stories, a videos series on RU-vid, really look at it if you don't know it ) and it pretty fit the imperial style, not as much as the one in the TRoS art book.
I think you if you haven't you should read the book bloodline which outlines what happens when is true father is revealed to the new Republic but it also shows how the first order initially started out and I think they could have made one or two other books to go along with that to build up a proper origin for the first order
