As a retired systems engineer, I am appalled at how reckless the medical community has been in regard to covid mitigation. It might be the biggest public health catastrophe in our time. The repercussions still aren't completely known, we don't know how many people actually died from lockdowns, especially in other countries. I read that 5+ million kids died in asia from famine since lockdowns started, millions plunged back into poverty. We're going to be dealing with the consequences of this "pandemic" for decades to come, exactly what the governments wanted because it gives them a boogeyman to "fix."

That's the best video ever! It took me 3 courses in a research PhD program to understand how to differentiate which research is credible and good and which is "garbage in = garbage out." The answer is in the research design. Statistics don't lie, but research design does.

"Most science is not credible, it's not true, it's not believable, it's not useful, it's not actionable. It's done to inflate careers and often for profit entities." I am saving this quote from this video. I am a scientist myself, and I have come to the same conclusion over the past few years (not necessarily related to covid-19). It is very difficult for a scientist to recognize this, and then to come to terms with it, because we all enter science with certain ideals. And then it's very important to acknowledge it, because the whole society needs to understand what science is, what it isn't, and how easily it gets deformed by external factors. I really enjoy your videos, great work Vinay!

It is very weird, isn't it. My prior has always been a skepticism of RCTs when it comes to individual (medical) choices. There are too many individual variables - it doesn't make sense that Drug A is always the best for every single individual. But now it feels like in the only arena where RCTs could actually provide some quite straight forward answers, Public Health and NPIs, this almost religious reliance on RCTs is out the window. I find it very baffling that in the instance where experience and a "gut feeling" would be a good thing (prescribing statins, blood pressure control, HRT etc) some advocate for a strict "evidence based" approach, whereas in an arena where human intuition is so much more likely to be wrong (mass interventions) "EBM" is out the window for many people.

I think many scientists have been duped becasue they dont understand the political and philosophical underpinnings of what is happening in the world and this has led them to this arrogant notion of "trust the science". Science, and I mean proper science that actually follows the scientific method is non-ex!stent in virology. So no one can say that there is or ever was a "v-!-r us". Unfortunately, most people don't understand the methods used in virology, so they don't realize these fictional "v-!-r us" objects have never been seen or found in a person's clinical specimen. They're ONLY found as artifacts in cell culture experiments that virologists perform. Yet, these things have become the modern equivalent of "evil spirits" for today's society. Beliefs. Really. All with mass regulations, ritualistic like injections, masks, etc. based on these beliefs. I think it's time people learned the truth. Those are the facts.

People forget how long it took our ancestors to discover which herbs healed which illnesses and how much (poison is in the dose). They expect science and medicine to progress fast all the time and to have success more often than not, which from what I’ve read actually is the opposite. As far as lockdowns you are absolutely right that we should look at each place as unique. NY and Italy had worse early outcomes- living in close quarters. Science talks about individualized medicine as the future utilizing genetics… but we didn’t look at people and communities as individuals. We lumped everyone into the same situation regardless of the place they live, community spread, and even viewed everyone as having the same base health by offering the same vaccine for everyone. Absolutely nothing about an individualized medical approach (considering underlying health issues or robust health, previous infection..)

Thanks Vinay, this was one of your most thoughtful and analytic pieces. I particularly appreciate the wider context within which it is placed. I came across your work a few months ago as part of my own research into understanding what has happened over the last two years. I am a public servant by profession - with a higher education in philosophy and sociology - and long felt uneasy about many of the policy decisions being taken by my country from 2020, before starting to put that into a conceptual framework from about early 2021. Your work has helped my thinking a lot. Looking back over the last two years, the carnage and near wanton destruction instituted by people like myself albeit much higher up who ought to have known better - who are expected to know better - is heartbreaking. We did that. Without care aforethought. As you said in this piece, a true analysis of the harms wrought by these "interventions" awaits but I think it will be a grim reckoning. Thanks again for your work and takes over the last many months. Keep it up and stay true. Good luck and fair winds to you.

Been enjoying your presentations, you’re one of the few voices of balance without the alarm. It is my understanding that there have been a number of RCT’s on the effectiveness of public mask wearing and they have all demonstrated essentially negligible benefit for reducing transmission of URV’s. Not that we shouldn’t continue such tests, but at what point are we justified in concluding that an intervention lacks sufficient evidence to be considered valuable? Certainly in the case of masks there is zero data to support universal public mask mandates. The philosophical, historical, skeptical minded person can’t help but be nudged toward cynicism when the tribalism and divisiveness of the mask issue seems to be a handy tool for the “othering” tactic wielded so unscrupulously by the political class. The absence of any real data supporting masks seems to indicate there are other motivations for such policies. Anyway, I doubt anyone will read this but that’s where I’m at with the masks, having read the summaries of a number of RCT’s done over the last 60 years or so, and seeing them fail so badly anecdotally. Interested in other perspectives, keep up the great work, Dr.

Hi PD, I choose to respond to your post as much because you wrote that you did to expect anyone to read it but also because you are correct, one of the fundamental principles of scientific work is that it careful study of any topic fails to reveal any substantial and repeatable evidence to confirm the hypothesis then that hypothesis is not valid, this is not the same as the burden of proof require to support any claim as 'true', it is simply so much easier to dis-prove a concept than prove it. This does not appear to be an idea that is familiar to politicians and journalists, people that for one reason or another are concerned with getting the right answer and being in control of the facts, critical review and integrity are not required. Cheers, Richard.

My observation of science over the last couple years in a nutshell: People (who are not scientists) questioning science that doesn’t seem to make sense being mocked by other people (also not scientists) for questioning said science even though they never actually read or reviewed it and they only know about it because someone on TV (also not a scientist) told them it’s what the science said and later turned out to be inaccurate after all (oops!). During all this, an actual scientist was saying idiotic things like “if you question me, your really questioning science” which is a ludicrously non-scientific thing for s scientist to say, especially a high ranking one… It’s been a real banner couple years for science alright… 🙄

In my youth I worked on cars (before computers). The car did not run so you came up with a theory of why and then started testing the theory. One by one the theory had to change as testing provided more information. In the end when the car ran again I had a theory about what had been wrong but even then it could have been a combination of things. What I learned was it is ok to try things but you also have to be willing to move on if something does not work. I took this experience on to my life as an Analog Designer but I am so surprised when so called engineers are so sure of themselves because of what they learned in school when the data points in another direction.

Hi, Ellen. A word of caution, if I may... The idea of a study 'getting dubbed' this or that has no bearing on the study itself. It's just someone's opinion about the study. Whatever the media, either mainstream, pundits, or alternative may think or say about any particular study is irrelevant. Irrelevant. This is the case whether the study is regarded credible or not credible by either side, or by no side at all. The only way to tell if a study has reached conclusions that are sound is to examine the details of the study itself. And, as Dr. Prasad mentioned, there are many elements of the study that can be poorly designed and/or controlled for. So, unless one is not only trained in the scientific method, but also has some experience designing and carrying-out studies, they aren't really in a position to say whether its conclusions are true. I know that's not what any particular human psyche prefers to imagine but it happens to be the case. So, again, to decide whether a study is true based on 'who says what' about it isn't at all scientifically based. Even competent, credible experts can sometimes err, and as much as we may not want to admit it... sometimes the buffoons stumble their way into or upon truth. Cheers!

@@RichardHarlos In a sane world, a study would only be labeled as right wing if it was right wing. But today, anything that doesn't agree with the mainstream narrative is immediately labeled as a right wing conspiracy nut and censored, regardless of political affiliation, especially when it is true. I'm glad to hear this troubling issue aired! I'm a retired statistical programmer who reads a great deal of biomedical literature: clinical trials, observational studies, meta-analyses, policy statements, and just expressions of opinion (which are not always clearly distinguished by the journals that publish them), and many make me miserable. One problem is that professional statisticians have such a restricted role: they're often not involved in experimental design at all; in fact, I frequently see papers that have no statisticians among their authors. I've also seen publications with about 30 authors which have only one statistician or epidemiologist among them and conclude that a drastic action should be taken. I remember an especially notorious policy paper that made bizarre recommendations for new treatment restrictions but did not explain how they were derived from a list of publications with the inappropriate header "References"; although there were several (very polite and timid) objecting responses, there were no calls for retraction. I can only guess that these things slip through either because the recommendations are popular among professionals or because no one among them really cares about those patients who might be hurt.

Another great video from Dr Prasad. Thank you! I believe science is the best thing we have. Science is not perfect, and the good or bad outcome of it only depends on us, humans. Far too many errors occur from lack of discussions, from the power that some have to silence others, from decisions that are one sided and don't allow any other voice to be heard. Science isn't owned by anyone, but during the last two years, it sadly seems to have been.

A reporter for the hill submitted the idea that lockdowns may have been counterproductive. He basically argued that we are social creatures, and that imposing an edict against outdoor gatherings only increased indoor gatherings. If you can’t congregate at the beach, or in the park, or even in your own yard because the Karen next door might call the cops, then you’re probably just going to gather in doors, which we know is much worse for spreading COVID.

The tragedy of this pandemic is that we more or less ignored the data. From the start of the pandemic we have ignore it. We knew very on that the people who were dying were largely older and had pre-existing conditions but we chose to ignore it because we chose to listen to the drumbeat of fear; which was stoke by the corporate media cared more about the profits tat they could make covering a disaster than they cared about telling people the truth and educating them about what was going on. They were the ones calling for masking in spite of the fact that there was no credible evidence, at the time, that they worked. They were the ones who were largely calling for lockdowns even though most public health officials knew the dangers and were reluctant to make those calls. And they were the ones whom the politicians listened to because they had the power to bring down the politicians and portray them as imbeciles. They were the ones who were driving these decisions. They are the ones responsible for this disaster.

Science can definitely help to sort things out if it is used and applied by people with the necessary intellect , a “moral” background and good intentions ! - but we know from our history and can see it every day that science is also used by people who are only interested in their own profits and power ! It’s really different Interests and motivations of all sorts of people who are working against each other that complicates everything ! For every honest person who tries to clarify and help you have one that tries to obscure and distort ! The Tools are there - the question is who uses them - and to which purpose ?

They felt it was more important to protect their woke image than straight up protecting the public based on avoiding a contagion.

I think you can debate this. At least in a pre-vaccine era. The problem with the GDB is that it called for things that were not practically do-able on short notice to the extent that would be needed. You only need to compare Sweden with its neighbours to see this. The more I think of it, the more I feel it is tragic that the GDB didn't come half a year later, because in a situation where you have vaccines the calculus really shifts in its favour.

The whole point of a doctor patient relationship is for a learned individual, who knows your specific health situation, to consult with you to derive the best care for you. So much of this has been railroaded in our current medical scenario. Many do not have a family or personal physician. They use emergency or urgent care, either due to lack of insurance in the US or inability to find a physician in Canada. Even when you find a family physician in Canada, they often are only there to treat the latest symptom, write a prescription and move to the next patient. As a Canadian I have been fortunate to find good physicians, but have run into the symptom/pill popper type as well. When there is a shortage of GOOD physicians and the system rewards/encourages those who would rather write prescriptions than diagnose issues, we have no real healthcare provider to advocate for the individual. Everyone's healthcare is an individual case. I feel Dr Prasad is an honourable physician, but I fear there aren't enough to go around. And Big Pharma has been muddying the waters.
