In recent years a number short documentaries have been made by community activists and residents in the Greater New Lodge to highlight issues affecting the local neighbourhood. Given their low budget nature they may lack some of the gloss and finesse of big mainstream productions. However the films authentically reflect important grass roots perspectives of community life that are often hidden and even excluded from the mainstream view. Each in its own way has something significant to say.
13 Days in August
During August 2019, street trouble and anti-social behaviour that occurred in the vicinity of a largely unwanted bonfire in the New Lodge was given widespread, sensationalist coverage by the mainstream media. However at exactly the same time and just a few streets away many hundreds of local people were enjoying a carnival day that had been organised as part of the annual New Lodge Community Festival Programme. The media however decided to totally ignore the carnival event choosing instead to focus on the negative behaviour of a few. COVID- New Lodge Lockdown 2019/20
This film captures some of the amazing community responses in the New Lodge during Lockdown. It shows but a fraction of the huge amount of work conducted by various community and youth groups who sprang into action doing what they could to counteract the isolation and hardship of local people in the face of the deadly pandemic.
