56, started smoking at 12, quit 3 months ago. Down 35 pounds on clean keto. No longer obese, but still 20-25 pounds to go. Walking 6000+ steps a day. I feel so much better than 3 months ago. Building a home gym and plan to start lifting when it's done (couple weeks to.go) Even it it isn't adding years to my life, it's adding life to my years. The bonus it is adding some years is just an extra bonus. Thanks Thomas!

This is GREAT news. I'm 63 years old and lost 55 lbs over 10 months with low carb - I still have 15 to go. AND I just started Lifting weights and doing HIIT - and I never really exercised because I was 70 lbs overweight for 40 years. So this is great news to me! Also eating about 80 grams of protein a day when I used to eat about 20. Thank you for teaching me how to change my life and add years to it as well! ❤❤❤

My fav video so far. Explains exactly what seemed to have happened to me. I'm 54 , and I honestly I feel like I'm in my 30s It wasn't so long ago that I was always feeling fatigued and lethargic. And even a moderate amount of exercise would make me feel like I needed to rest the entire next day. I felt inefficient and just....OLD. But then about a year and a half ago I switched to a low carb mediteranian diet. Salmon, high quality olive oil, green veggies, ect. Started working out routinely. Started losing belly fat and some 3 or 4 months into this thing, and out of nowhere, I just started waking up every morning with tons of energy! I mean let's move type energy I hadn't felt since I was in my 30s. I will never ever go back to my old way of living. So it's so fascinating to hear Thomas explain it like this. Thank you Thomas🙏

Great information, thanks! I'm 66 and been eating low inflammation foods, no sugar, low carbs, getting plenty of protein, good fats, and intermittent fasting, with lots of physical exercise multiple times a week for the last 4 years, especially HIT. Lost 35 lbs and don't want to lose any more. Working on building more muscle and keeping it, without losing any more weight. Healthier than I was at 40. Low carbs really keeps the BP low and glucose/ketones running at good levels with good insulin response. I take no medications.

I honestly have never heard that sentiment about smoking. All doctors i happened to talk to about smoking in my lifetime, decades back even, told me that a few years after quitting people's bodies generally would be almost entirely repaired from it in their experience.

I agree with the higher protein especially if you are that age (I am 60) and doing resistance training. Only downsides are expense and perhaps some problems with kidneys (which I would think would show up in the annual blood and urine tests) and cost. Way my Keto doctor explained it to me as I am burning off my body fat is that fat is also included in the dietary Keto budget. Didn't have a good answer for me once I got my fat down to desirable levels though. I won't eat fat for fat's sake, but as part of an overall diet. I guess protein does trigger insulin as well - just later and less impact.

353 pounds at my high when 58 (57 BMI). Two years ago I went on Keto and dropped 160 pounds (picked back up about 7 pounds and have stayed about that plateau for half a year). Always was a walker and periodically did rowing. Now I am consistently walking/stepping/rowing 25K a day (audiobooks and a dog help that), row about 3x/week (included in the 25K/day), and resistance train 2-3x/wk. My body fat is probably around 25% right now. I can do resistance training 1 1/2 hours hitting 17 exercises with 12 x 3 reps. My diet is high in protein with satiety fat (fat sources mostly avocado, EVOO, butter when cooking, lean steak cuts, skinless chicken, and Greek Yogurt) and lots of non-starchy vegetables and blackberries/raspberries. Would like to drop another 20 pounds and get down to 20% body fat.

The key takeaways from Thomas DeLauer's discussion on longevity research include: 1. **Lifestyle Changes at Any Age:** Contrary to previous beliefs, making lifestyle changes at any age, including later in life, can significantly impact life expectancy and overall health. 2. **Quitting Smoking:** Research shows that quitting smoking at various ages, even as late as between 45 and 54, can add years to one's life, challenging the notion that "the damage is done." 3. **Physical Activity Benefits:** Increasing daily physical activity, even starting in one's 50s or 60s, can substantially reduce all-cause mortality. A moderate increase in exercise, such as 20 minutes per day over five years, can lower the risk of dying by 24%. 4. **Protein Intake in Older Adults:** Contrary to the idea that older adults should reduce protein intake, increasing protein consumption can improve muscle mass and health span. Adding a protein shake daily is suggested as an easy way to increase protein intake. 5. **Mitochondrial Health:** Mitochondrial biogenesis, the process of creating new mitochondria, is crucial for maintaining energy and vitality. Interventions like caloric restriction, fasting, or low-carb diets can stimulate this process, improving mitochondrial quality and quantity even in older age. 6. **Holistic Approach to Longevity:** The video emphasizes a comprehensive approach to enhancing longevity, focusing on smoking cessation, increased physical activity, proper nutrition, and maintaining mitochondrial health as key factors. 7. **Empowerment Over Genetics:** DeLauer encourages focusing on modifiable lifestyle factors rather than genetic predispositions, offering a hopeful perspective for those looking to improve their longevity and quality of life through actionable changes.

Hi Thomas! As your channel is so heavily dense with comments, you may not see this, but I hope you do! You mention adding a protein shake a day, which indeed is not that hard at all. You can have one with a meal instead of having say water or tea (or whatever beverage). I notice that protein shakes spike insulin and sugar (the protein shakes are super refined so quickly get into the system). What do you suggest one does to slow that process down? I have included the sake with olive oil, flax seeds, chia seeds, and avocado to add more fat. Thoughts?

Try micellar casein protein shakes (aim for low grams of sugar and 25+ grams of protein per scoop). Casein protein is slower-digesting compared to whey. Also eating some healthy fats (some peanut butter, cheese, greek yogurt, olives etc) before downing the shake.
@1mjourney
@1mjourney 5 месяцев назад
@@alexandermacneil4430 Hi! Thanks for the comment. Yes, I do indeed increase healthy fats as much as possible. I actually include avocado (sometimes olive oil) right into my shakes or consume them while drinking a shake. A shake in its own is deadly for insulin spikes as it is so heavily refined. @nathanielacton3768 5 месяцев назад
There are whole area's of science that have not applied to the long life hotspots. We keep looking for 'the thing' so we can capture and monetize longevity in to a product of a plan. What we will probably find in the end is that it's a combination of two things and one of the two is going to be off limits to us. For example one cause might be gut microbiome that's adapted to eating a certain way. The microbiome may come from eating food specifically from that area over a long period of time, or from the diet of mothers milk who ate certain soys that prepared the baby with defenses against some of the phytochemicals which are pretty bad for us in some lupines. I'm sure the answer will be interesting, but what we are finding is that looking for a silver bullet just just blindly copying things without know exactly what's going on isn't working as well as hoped. Studies like this that provide data on 'us in our own environment' seem more useful.

No offence here but if you are in the US, probably the best thing to look for is the source of the milk solids. Prefer Australia and New Zealand as those countries do not use milking feed lots the way the US does and their version of the FDA is more stringent than the US FDA on acceptable contaminants in the milk. My son plays at the top end of AAA hockey and I import the whey for him so he isn't loaded up with estrogen promoting hormones and other poor choices the US farmers are economically forced in to. At 59yo I weighed 347lbs. Today at 60yo I'm at 210lbs. Workout 2 hours 4x a week. Hard workouts. You can reverse a lot of damage with the proper diet and real exercise, not going at it with a half azzed effort. People don't recognize me, I'm off all meds and machines. I outlift guys at the gym over half my age and my physique looks way better. Not bragging, just saying it CAN be done if you WANT it bad enough.

Tgat protein is hard to afford once you’re on a fixed income. But lentils and rice are inexpensive and might be an option for some.

Red lentils are milder, same protein, and cook up fast. If doing rice in same pot, let the rice get half done before adding red lentils and more water.

The key takeaways from Thomas DeLauer's discussion on longevity research include: 1. **Lifestyle Changes at Any Age:** It's never too late to make lifestyle changes that can significantly impact life expectancy and health span. Changes such as quitting smoking, increasing physical activity, and adjusting dietary habits can add years to one's life, even if initiated later in life. 2. **Quitting Smoking:** Research shows that quitting smoking at any age can extend life expectancy. Even those who quit smoking between the ages of 45 and 54 can see a substantial increase in lifespan, challenging the notion that the damage from smoking is irreversible after a certain age. 3. **Physical Activity:** Increasing daily physical activity has a direct, inverse correlation with all-cause mortality. A study highlighted by DeLauer found that adding just 20 minutes of exercise per day over five years can reduce the risk of dying by 24%, emphasizing the importance of movement regardless of age. 4. **Protein Intake in Older Adults:** Contrary to previous beliefs, increasing protein intake as one ages can improve health span and potentially extend life expectancy. Older adults, especially those over 50, are encouraged to increase their protein intake to support muscle health and overall vitality. 5. **Mitochondrial Health:** Mitochondrial biogenesis, the process of creating new mitochondria, is crucial for maintaining energy, strength, and vitality. This process can be stimulated through exercise, intermittent fasting, and low-carb diets, and is beneficial even in older age, contrary to previous beliefs that mitochondrial damage was largely irreversible. 6. **Empowerment to Change:** DeLauer's message empowers individuals to take control of their health through actionable lifestyle changes, regardless of their current age or past lifestyle choices. The focus is on what can be changed and improved rather than dwelling on past behaviors. 7. **Holistic Approach to Longevity:** A combination of quitting harmful habits like smoking, engaging in regular physical activity, optimizing protein intake, and focusing on mitochondrial health forms a comprehensive approach to improving longevity and quality of life. 8. **Practical Recommendations:** Simple, practical recommendations such as adding a protein shake to one's daily diet are provided as easy ways to incorporate these changes into everyday life, making the goal of improved longevity more attainable.

Bowmar whey protein shakes are good, but I add Splenda. They aren’t sweet enough. Dr. Layne Norton and Dr. Mike Israetel (sp?) both insist that non-nutritive sweeteners are not harmful. The meta analysis just doesn’t support beliefs about them causing diabetes or cancer.

Regarding BOWMAR NUTRITION: So @ThomasDeLauer - this lawsuit says Bowmar was sued for over claiming their protein content: "In October 2021, consumers sued Bowmar Nutrition, saying laboratory testing proved some of its products have 10% to 67% fewer grams of protein than advertised, according to the Iowa Capital Dispatch. Some of those claims were dismissed in March, according to the Capital Dispatch, but the case continues." What''s the latest?

I have to agree with the point said at 4:30 at least. Kids will grow on literally any food; their growth would be impacted more by exercising than by the food itself. As you grow, your diet clearly has a direct impact. It's unfortunate but it just happens that way.

It might be the best news you've heard for elderly people, but for younger folks it might serve the opposite role letting them think it's not necessary to start living healthy already, because there will still be time to do that later, it won't be to late also later... 😉
