I had the same problem when I was treating for mites. I would just insert it into one of the holes. Worked good. I glad someone came up with a better idea too treat for mites.
Whitney having 24 Apimaye hives I have been trying to figure out how I was going to treat with oxalic acid vapor. So I just placed an order for one of these. And I need to get a new flag bowl because mine went down in a big wind storm. Thanks for sharing brother.
I love the vaporizer, any tips on keeping the tip clear? I get 3 or 4 colonies done and then it starts blowing off caps and the tip is solid with oxalic acid. Great videos
Hmm. I haven’t really had that problem much. I use a honey scratcher with one of the tines bent and will stick it in the tip is it starts to get clogged as it will occasionally but overall haven’t had to deal with that much. If o were you I would email Rob at Lorob Bees and see what he says.
Mine did it once ,1)drilled new hole, as we're hitting frame, 2) I also thought oa was damp so put moisture packets in , this morning no issues Could be either or something else But lorobbees vaporizer is great product
Ya, now that I think about it I think it's the 90 percent humidity making the oxalic acid damp. I will get some of those moisture packets . Thanks for the input.
Did your vaporizer ever get to 508°F? First 3 treatments I did on my bees the temperature never went much above 440°F. The last two treatments I did, the temperature went over 500°. Not sure if I need to contact Rob about this or not.
I run 200 polystyrene colonies and need a way to vaporize them with oxalic but the hot gun melts the poly. It seems like an insert similar to this could work from the front entrance .
Hi Bruce. Have you ever used the OAV wand that goes in the front of the hive? If so, how does it compare to this type if OAV treatment? I’ve never done either and would appreciate your input before I purchase my own.
Yes. I used the wand type vaporizer early on. I got it from Bud Willis (Facebook). It is effective and well built. A very good product, but it just took too much time. At least 3 to 4 minutes per hive. So now when I treat o use the Lorob Bees vaporizer. It’s much faster and more efficient. But both work just fine.
Yes there are ways to see the mite drop. In these Apimaye hives when if the tray were clean you would be able see them in he tray as they dropped but mine was too dirty. I am still trying to figure out the most effective treatment product and schedule for treating mites. OAV is actually most effective when brood is low in the hive line during late fall or winter because the vapor does not penetrate the brood cappings where new mites are developed.
Oh, the Diatomaceous earth won't kill the bees...didnt know that. Also don't you want to close it off in front? Put drawer in after for like 10 min? Like the wood boxes.. second year beek, just curious, maybe for sake of demonstrating video of vaporizer and plate that you didn't close up?
I think the way those cups are designed a full cup is the amount to use for one box. So fo double boxes I will add more. I actually have a scoop that is the right amount for a box that I use. My understanding is that the proper amount of OA is one gram per box.
@@brucesbees My understanding is that one gram is equal to 1/4 teaspoon, so 2 grams would be 1/2 teaspoon. I recently had a clone PRO Vap 110 made and started to use it. The 1/2 teaspoon dose does not fill the rubber stopper like you had it. I did a treatment last night where I used a full teaspoon in the stopper, and that still left some room in the stopper. I believe that someone is doing a study on how much OA to use. They were stating that the 1/2 teaspoon rate was not enough to kill the mites, but have not seen any final results from their testing.
you wouldn't know how the lorob caps compare to the Provap caps would you? I need some extra caps for the Provap I already own.....and his caps are MUCH more economical than the originals. IF they fit, I'd be all over that.
I am not sure why it does not harm the bees but my understanding is that it damages the feet or legs of the mites so they can no longer cling to the bees.
@jrys23 the front plate can be removed by unscrewing 3 small screws. The problem is those cheap vaporizers get really hot and I am afraid they would melt the bottom of the hive.
Hi friend I have one problem and I want share it with you I have one two frame Nuc and waiting for queen to get to put it there but I see workers put some eggs in there two or three eggs in them cells after two weeks I see it make larva and 3 queen cells can you let me know how that happened can I put queen in there or wait until them queen cells hatched Thanks for your advise
Are you sure there is no queen or there were no eggs when you made the split. If there were eggs when you made the split the bees will make emergency queen cells. You can wait and see what happens or you can go ahead and use the new queen and destroy the queen cells. It really is hard to know exactly what to tell you without actually seeing it myself.
@@brucesbees I know there is no eggs there because I put one honey and pollen and one new frames and queen cell and brood was before has two or three eggs in them cells one of them queen cells is capped this afternoon tomorrow morning I send photos from that frames

Why not just drill a hole and permanently press fit a metal tube into the hives that your vaporizer nozzle will fit into? that's what I do on my poly and apimaye hives, or else just vape through the entrance after smoking lightly. Cheaper than spending 130 for a bottom plate which I'm sure works, but jeez. I guess a lot of beekeepers have unlimited money to spend on equipment or get it for free.
That sounds like a good idea. The plate is worth it to me, especially seems like it would be an asset if you have a bunch of these Apimaye hives. I tried application through the entrance but it did not work well for me. Many would probably agree with you on the cost. But this plate will last for a good long time (maybe indefinitely), is super convenient and you do not have to alter the hives. For those who want to do what you have done that is great. This is just another option. I understand that $130 is a chunk of change but it’s a one time purchase. Worth it to me. If people are willing to pay the extra money for these Apimaye hives, and in my opinion they are a luxury when wooden hives work just fine, then maybe the $130 is not unreasonable. I really like the plate, but I am sure your method works very well too and it sounds like it is the best option for you in your situation. Thanks for sharing.
