I own the m1 (12.9) and I had to go and check out the m4. I was surprised to find myself not blown away by it. It wasn’t the same as upgrading from iPhone 12 Pro to 15 pro max
@Graf-XTechReviews
@Graf-XTechReviews 4 месяца назад
That’s fair, I do think the 12 and 15 pros have more noticeable changes between them than the m1 to m4 iPads. I still think there is a lot of really neat changes, but if what you have works, I think you should continue to use it until it doesn’t work or unless there is something really compelling about any newer models

Nope, the M1 is excellent and 95% of its users are satisfied with it! Nice comparison but the only practical difference is the thinnest! Not worth $1k.

That’s great! I’m very glad that you can do all you need with your M1 device! I completely agree that there is no need to spend extra money if it won’t do anything different for you! Although, not sure about 95% just because I know several people who aren’t super happy with their M1, but again, if it does all you need, keep going with it!

Not gonna argue the fact that these chips are overpowered. But this upgrade is huge between the screen the physical redesign, Magic Keyboard, and Apple Pencil Pro you are gaining a lot from any of the previous M series iPads. I just upgraded from the M1 and it’s a significant change with all these factors. If you bought an M1 just to consume media I’d say you bought an unpractical device along time ago because you would have been more than fine with the iPad Air. These changes are significant if you take advantage of it as a Pro device.

I am considering going from the 12.9 pro m1 to the 11 inch m4. I can also trade-in my iPad for £415 to make the switch a bit cheaper.

That’s actually pretty much what I did! I didn’t go with the 11 inch before because the screen was still LCD, but the new screen is amazing!

Not even close to true bro. I have my m1 still but just got an m4 and I guarantee you it shits on the m1. Especially gaming wise which is one of the reasons I have an iPad to begin with. Now if you’re just using it for videos and movies and lightweight gaming then yes there are about the same excluding the new oled screen which in and of itself is worth the upgrade imo but for an example high end games like re4 remake run in the low 20s on the m1 and on the m4 it’s hitting upwards of high 70s (fps). I mean it’s literally night and day. Plus it’s future proofed for literally any high end game that comes out for years on iPad. Then again the new oled is absolutely stunning. But yeah the m1 is extremely nice still and I will be keeping mine but another thing is games aren’t even optimized for the m4 yet and I’m still being able to run max graphics and max fps on every game I played in my m1 where there was ALWAYS compromises. I get that the m1 is a beast still for most people and that’s why I’m keeping mine bc I’ll use it when I’m not needing that extra power but really after seeing the new oled and how bright it gets it’s hard to go back to m1 for that reason alone.

I'll add this also. I'm an artist. I don't see the benefit of haptic feedback or rotating as "superior." It feels more like a preference, if you prefer one over the other. They are the same pencil otherwise. If those other features aren't beneficial to someone, then it's doesn't matter. The diff between Apple pencil 1 and 2 was pretty big. This is so minimal to pay another 129 again for 3 new things seems a waste. I really dislike that we cannot use the AP 2 with the M4, that alone will make it harder for me to choose apple in the future. The accessories should just be cross device, they did this on purpose to make more money.
@Graf-XTechReviews
@Graf-XTechReviews 2 месяца назад
Yeah I totally see what you’re saying. I’m not really a digital artist, so I’ve heard from some people that these are cool features, but maybe they really aren’t as game-changing as I initially thought, so thank you for sharing. I would also agree that the change from the 1st to 2nd gen Apple Pencil was a bigger leap than from 2nd Gen to the Pro, but I’d still say it’s a pretty decent upgrade. Also, it is possible that the it was a money grab by Apple to change the compatibility, and I would’ve definitely LOVED to see the old model work with it, but because of the moving of the camera to landscape, they did have to redesign that entire charging mechanism and the magnets that hold it on. So I do think an argument could be made that it was a necessity to not have it backwards compatible, but it is hard to say. Again, I’m not saying I like that at all, I definitely would’ve preferred to see it work with the older model too. Thanks again for sharing!

Cosmetic differences won't prompt consumers to spend $2000 dollars, The main conclusion is what you can do with the M4 that you can't do with the M1 and the answer is NOTHING! M1 in 2024 is still all powerful and upgrading to M4 is a waste of money 💰
@Graf-XTechReviews
@Graf-XTechReviews 2 месяца назад
I think it can definitely be a waste for some people. If you don’t need anything more than the M1 then I’d definitely say to keep that! But there are use cases where the M4 actually improves what you do on the iPad, like for me, all my rendering for videos and 3D modeling is significantly better with the new iPad and battery life is much nicer. But I totally get not everyone is gonna need that for sure, so I agree that people shouldn’t upgrade just for it to look better 👍

Great video I tried the iPad Pro 11 inch with the OLED display For 7 days inside and out side in bright sunlight, couldn’t tell any difference, except in extreme bright sunlight. You could see it slightly better than my 7 year old iPad Pro 10.5 inch with 600 nits of brightness. I sent it back to Apple because I could not see anything to justify paying over $1300 with a case. speaking of a case when I bought my iPad 7 years ago, I also got the Logitech keyboard case at the time for $139 back then it was not called touch because there was no trackpad but it did have a full row of function keys like Apple finally decided to add 7 years later. 7 years ago I paid $800 for the 10.5 inch iPad Pro. The logitech keyboard case protected it perfectly after a few severe drops no damage whatsoever to the iPad. The Apple, so called magic keyboard has absolutely no protection around the edges which is where mine landed three different times so for anybody spending over $1000 to not have that protected seems ridiculous to me. The new Logitech keyboard worked perfectly on the new iPad 11 and the bigger trackpad is a nice improvement compared to my older model. Apple is offering a $100 trade-in but I may just decide to sell my old iPad with the logitech case and first generation pencil that still works fine for $275. Which I will apply to buying a new 13 inch iPad Air. The only thing magic about apples keyboard is the price.
@Graf-XTechReviews
@Graf-XTechReviews 4 месяца назад
For me I do find that the new screens are a lot better for brighter conditions and just the quality is significantly better. I totally get the problem of no protection on the sides. Regarding the keyboard, Apple had planned everything in advance in their product evolution. It's clearly calculating, making a small trackpad and the next year bigger.
@Graf-XTechReviews
@Graf-XTechReviews Месяц назад
That’s definitely possible, although the reason it’s bigger is because the whole iPad was redesigned to be thinner and lighter allowing for the Magic Keyboard to have the iPad sit further back and then it gave more space for a trackpad. It’s very light lighter than the magic keyboard smooth plastic finish,trackpad is bigger and one thing that I really like is they added a screen grab function key in the center. It also has the brightness function keys which the magic keyboard does not. The price should be reduced drastically in a week or two now that apples lock on selling the logictech keyboards until May 27, 2024,has expired. I watched many RU-vidr’s create their content around this topic of whether to get an 11 inch pro or the 13 inch pro, and clearly there were moments that I could feel that you were leaning towards 11 inch as a preference. that became clear towards the end of the video and I respect you for taking the time and doing such a savage review of the two as I come from a 12.9 pro trying to decide whether should I get an 11 inch or 13 and at the moment I'm testing out the 11 inch pro and all the points that you made make so much sense. The biggest gainers are the mobility, the portability when sitting in a coffee shop or on the move you don't have to think twice and I've noticed that 13 inch if you're spending money on that it's just better to get a MacBook Air for their size and real estate. If that is a real concern if you would like to also get the ease of holding it in one hand whereas 13 inch inch model feels a bit worrysome for me, but the 11 inch is such a perfect spot with the new camera set up and the performance of the Apple Pencil and the coming AI features with the new iOS and for iPad it is going to be a game changer in my opinion and that's the direction I think with more and more software apps are heading to. So Air 13" 256gb+5g is £1,050, Pro 256gb+5g - £1,499 and upgrading to 512GB it's £1,699 (ouch!). I just won an M1 12.9" 512GB+5G on eBay in immaculate condition for £570, that's a third of the price! - and it still has a very impressive ProMotion display, the same one you get on the 14" MacBooks, so it actually pairs better as an external display. As for the CPU, I have a MacBook Pro M3 Max and M1 Mac Mini, to be honest, day to day there's no difference. Only when doing intensive things like compiling software, running large parallel loads like provisioning hundreds of servers, doing AI training (though I still do that on my Nvidia 3090), working with multi-cam video editing with heavy third party effects, etc - none of these things are even possible on the iPad...

There still some apps that are very powerful and take advantage of these new chips and I do notice a difference in them. Final Cut, Shapr3D, Photoshop are mostly where I see that. But it is true there are definitely many professional things that the iPad can’t do yet. It sounds like you made a great choice for your workflow! Thanks for sharing! By no means do I think that everyone needs the latest iPad! That was a great price you found too!👍
@DigiDriftZone

I found Photoshop far too crippled on the iPad when I tried it a year ago, has that changed? - and Final Cut, without compatibility with the Mac version, or third party plugins, or good external monitor support I also found it a bit lacklustre compared to the Mac version. Even little things like just minimising the app to do something else while it's exporting... But sounds like you're making the most of the hardware, I guess that's just it, if you're not going to be running heavy pro workloads then M4 (or even M1) is total overkill. If you are, then these are incredible chips :)

Photoshop has definitely gotten better on iPad, though I still think there’s a ways to go. And yeah there is definitely still some things that are a little annoying on the iPad, but so far I’ve found not too terrible work arounds for them. And yeah I completely agree, it really depends on what you’re doing with the iPad, and if you’re not doing heavier tasks then these chips are more than enough. Although I am very interested to see how much faster Apple Intelligence runs on the M4.

While I agree that it is the most “pro” for the artists, I don’t think I’d quite dumb the device down to a “toy.” I think it is a lot more capable than that even in just what I use it for. I do hope to continue to see the video editing apps get even more powerful and I do agree that they are not as full featured as some professionals need. Honestly I think the biggest part of that is the lack of plugin support. Thanks for sharing and I hope this helped to add some insight into how I see it!

There are a number of people who use ipads for professional uses. I don’t know what you’re implying by “child’s hobby” when video editing but too many times, RU-vidrs/commenters believe that video editing is the only “professional” job that can be done on an iPad. However, I’ll give you the benefit of a doubt by explaining to me the difference between a “child’s hobby” version of video editing/artist’s work and a “professional” version of it. I’ll wait….😴 Oh, by the way, there are hundreds of professional applications that can be accomplished on an iPad. It’s all relative, not conclusive.

Being able to knock out a couple missions in Warframe during my work breaks has been a sanity necessity, I just wish Digital Extremes would include KBM support for iPad and refine some of the optimizations already.

I updated from the M1. Because of the size and weight, I was always turning to a lighter, thinner 9.7 first gen iPad Pro in tablet mode. I bought this for the weight difference, the screen, and the potential of M4 (in that order). It is much better to use in tablet mode than the M1. I also had the combo touch on my M1. I don't like the naked iPad in tablet mode, so I preferred the Logitech to the Magic Keyboard. I am just using a ESR Lift case this time around. I rarely used the Logitech Keyboard. I always preferred pairing it with my mechanical keyboards. Thanks for doing this comparison, I found in interesting coming from the M1.

@Graf-XTechReviews

It does still heat up after some time of drawing. I do think it’s better than previous iPads because of the improved thermal design, but it’s not significantly better. As far as for 3D sculpting, I’m not 100% sure, I think pretty much any task that is more intense on the chip will heat it up to some degree but I haven’t personally tested it. I do know it handles CAD 3D modeling pretty well though with not a lot of heating up.

@@Graf-XTechReviews na, there's not "a chance" that battery drain is definitely going to be significantly higher on that older device, so to keep on mentioning the battery in your test is a bit misleading... the performance data will stay the same but that battery would have held up better on a new m1 vs m4... Good review tho but be more realistic when you're doing these comparison.. buyers aren't that "smart" and all they'll hear is that the m4 battery is better when realistically you're getting the same out of the device as the m1 and m2 when they were launched... batteries degrade over time.

@@Graf-XTechReviews So a tech reviewer that doesn't have an actual laptop or desktop? Hard to believe. If that's true then you are a very rare type of person and not representative of the general population. Most of us techies have a laptop or a desktop or both. Tablets are just supplementary devices. Also the M3 pro/max MacBook pro can edit videos wayy faster than the M2 and m1 ipad pros (you must been using one of those since you stated to not have a laptop and enjoy editing on iPads)

Sorry, I wasn’t very clear. I do have a Mac Studio with an M2 Max Chip. I have mentioned that I have that in previous videos. I started editing on the iPad Pro’s with the M4. I understand you only see the iPad as a supplementary device, but I see it as a very crucial device and I could not do what I do, at least not the way I do it, without the iPad. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the iPad, but truly, there is more to it for some people than you are seeing. And if you don’t see it as more, than no one is asking you to and you can continue to use it as a companion to your laptop. That is an awesome way to use them as well.
@h1a8
@h1a8 4 месяца назад
@@Graf-XTechReviews Desktop or laptop I say tomato you say... Well you get the point. My point is that the iPad is a supplementary device to most professionals. It was perceived that you were implying that the iPad can be most people's only device (no need for laptop /desktop). But that may not be what you intended. Just know that the iPad apps for video editing are limited. You can't install plug-ins etc. But if the iPad apps can do everything you need it to do the way you like and you have no use for an actual laptop/desktop then you are good for having an ipad as your only device. But for most professionals, this is not the case. We just can't live with an iPad alone. Ipad pro can replace a laptop/desktop only if the iPad apps are sufficient for a person's needs. The majority of viewers don't fall in this category. With that said, many sometimes have to do serious work (work only a Mac or pc can do) on the go. That's why owning a laptop (even if you have a desktop) is ideal.

If you are going to be spending money, spend it on something you like, something you enjoy, who cares if you don’t use it to its max capacity. So far of all the hundreds of RU-vid iPad pro 2024 videos not one said buy what you like. Doesn’t matter about the specs or how are you gonna use it. in the end, you have to decide what you want for what you’re willing to spend. They “like” upgrading or buying something that actually makes their experience better. This whole thing is a part of the process of “buying what you like” like you said lol.

Am I wrong thinking that the jump for the 11" has been FAR bigger than for the 13"?
