The Virginia Military Institute's Corps of Cadets honors the 10 cadets who fell on the New Market, Virginia battlefield during the Civil War. It marked the only time in US history that a student body fought together in combat. Of the six senior military colleges and four service academies, VMI is the only school afforded the honor of fixing bayonets during parade, due to the corps' actions at New Market.
