The Virginia Military Institute's Corps of Cadets honors the 10 cadets who fell on the New Market, Virginia battlefield during the Civil War. It marked the only time in US history that a student body fought together in combat. Of the six senior military colleges and four service academies, VMI is the only school afforded the honor of fixing bayonets during parade, due to the corps' actions at New Market. Clip is courtesy of VMI's public affairs office.

The young men from VMI that died at the battle of new market were and are still heroes to the people of the entire south. They were willing to give their lives for what they felt was the county, nothing more or less than any soldier today. VMI cadets did General Jackson and Armistead proud. As I have said on other sites, Virginia you have a lot to be proud of and I would burst from pride that my state produced such great men and soldiers. This Tennessean is envious.

The only time in U.S. History that an *entire* student body fought together in combat. The Citadel's cadets all fought, except for one that was studying in Germany, and 2 or 3 others that didn't basically because they couldn't or weren't there.

one of the neater things I have seen in my time of reenacting(still in the 36th Va infantry now) was an event at New Market, and we got to stand at the end while they had someone from VMI come up and march across in front of our colors, give name and rank, and then add "died on the field of honor sir" it was one of the most moving things ive seen

+greylab Find it very hard to believe a cadet who died in 1864 is your husbands cousin. Don't be an idiot.

+Contenta don't be idiot yourself. Of course he is a cousin. You just have to add a prefix in front of it. To us they are still cousins/ancestors. He is my husband's 1st cousin 4x removed. Can you figure that out?

Tootoo, obviously you are not very well rehearsed in history. In formal parades (such as the one shown above) VMI is the only military institution including the federal service academies allowed to fix bayonets. I also find it interesting that you call New Market traitorous. First, I cannot name one person from the Civil War era charged of treason. Second, if the Confederacy was so "traitorous" why does West Point make note of Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson on its admissions page?
