Try opening up those old max peeding rods to inspect them. Sometimes the nut on the end of the shaft inside comes off. Might be a easy fix and would be interesting to know how it failed.
Oh shit that reminds me of a time doing a front shock change. Cant remember what it was on but as I undid the top mount which is just a top hat so single nut in the middle. The shaft unscrewed internally and I'd already loosed off the bottom bolts. What a bang and fright you get as it jack knifed the shock and spring towards my nuts. Luckily not more than a hard slap to my leg but aye scary times
I had these new gen on my channel a month ago in an ek they were fine I also tracked them hard out for an entire day no issue, my latest video I fitted them on an ef and they didn’t lower the car at all
Nice overview! Seems like they are likely improved, but won't give you the true custom fit of far more expensive coilovers of course. I also hate 15mm nuts!
I bought a set of the orange adjustable dampening for my 91’ integra. Same issue with the front not going low enough. Great budget suspension but very bumpy still yet. Best content on RU-vid hands down btw!
I installed and reviewed a orange set for my channel aswell, I thought they were a great daily budget coilover but very soft with the stock spring ratess, the updated versions do look promising
Hey Jon, Great video as always! Solid review of the coilovers! Being honest, I think I am going to step up to the next level of coilovers when it is time! Totally agree that having to modify these to get proper ride height just kinda takes them down a notch! Excited to hear you may be getting more serious about the CRX. Very curious how a good intake manifold, cams and tune will positively effect your times!
@@GarageBuiltHondas I’ve checked but haven’t found this.. have you ever tried ITB’s on any of your track set ups? I think it would be fun with a tune, cam and small head work?
Great Video and review. Your last video with the adjustable Orange and black Coil overs on your CRX made be buy a set. I paid less than 200$ during a sale. I do not care for how bumpy the ride became. Stance looked fine. You were right about them being a budget starter set to get to know your car, which they did. I think next I will get a set that has better ride quality. Thanks Again for the vids
Great review and install as always Jon! MaXpeedingrods has been hooking me up with some parts recently also for my YT channel. I have an EF, DC2, and a RD1 so I might try to get a set one day in the future for one of them
i have the OG orange boi set on my 96 corolla and i think one of them is blown my top bushing is toast and i get clunks on speed bumps only on the driver side i might spend the money for some FA500s or BCs as they are the only brands for my 96well and XPR but i think i'm done with budget coils THANK YOU FOR THE DROP AND CHUCK TESSSTTTT
This was a really insightful and honest overview. i remember commenting back when you put the 2nd set in it would be inteeresting from a longevity POV. Great follow up. Loved the track stuff too. Congrats on the podium and on these budget coils, lets all agree these are the same level as suspension found on cheap mountain bikes and there's nothing wrong with that. But evcen so that set failed one in less than 600 miles? I'd just view these as pure aesthetics (not in your case tho it seems!) at the cost of ride quality and longevity of the parts and not a performance part at all (as they stand). If you get performance from your application consider it a bionus. I'd be looking to get a reputable brand for a bit more as once again it's mostly proven, buy cheap, buy twice.
@@GarageBuiltHondas phew! Just while im here been following you for a few years but don't comment much. Finaly bought an ep3 in the Summer but still lvoe your channel and your track outings. Im very jelly about your garage!
Watching you work that reciprocating saw, gives me the willies. haha I have a phobia around machines. As a guy who does his own wrenching, this has been a problem for me in the past...
Maxspeeding rods would have to redesign the pillow ball area to retain the shock travel .......id prob end up using the MPC lowering shock forks on the front suspension to get more adjustment out of the coilover package. Great video content as usual
Or maxspeeding rods will prob go with an over all shorter shock package for the ef chassis as honda and other suspension manufactures have before them.
Both solid points. The forks would amend that situation easily. But that'd require buying them.. lol. Hopefully they build a shorter shock for the EF chassis.
Sadly I cannot buy this brand. Too many reviews on utube say these components die within a year. Comeon manufacture, you cannot make a shock to last. My past shocks lasted 12 years (ok 5 too many), but you get the idea. good video.
i like watching you slam that sawzall blade on the table due to weirdly pushing down on it as if it's not about to slam down when you finish the cut. neat!
Question for ya. My driver side seems to clunk a lot when hitting bumps, would that be a coil problem or something else? All other corners are perfect except driver side
Send me a set for a 91 civic si I live in Montana. The winter around here kills these kind of performance suspension. Right now I'm running a Frankenstein set that seem to handle the cold and roads well but it hasn't been below 0 much this year.
Likely you need to have the mcpherson style struts to have the chamber adjustment on the strut tower. If you have upper ball joints like older hondas, then your camber adjustment would be on special aftermarket upper ball joint set up..
@@GarageBuiltHondas yea you were killin it on track👍 that b16 vtec from the gopro on the nose gets me everytime lol. Guess when I figure out the wheel setup on the cb7 I'll cut em up to get low enough 🙏🏼 great video fam. Keep it up 🔥
I’m curious to see if these have better dampening. That’s the main complaint I have with my current 12-way adjustable size: when I hit sharp bumps, my rear ended stutters out from under me.
Wow they raised prices that high 🤦🤦 not worth it at that price point. Especially if it seems like the coilovers got a revamp on style and not actual performance. If they are going to be that expensive then make model specific versions and correct spring rates for each trim. They can still use the same shocks and get away with it and at least throw correct springs rates for each trim they offer. The spring rates for a crx just don't work well on DC and EG. That's the biggest issue with mine is the soft springs
The only downside to that is you have a great chance to experience coil bind. With these shocks it would probably happen, with a shock of better quality it could help offset that from happening.
Same issue I had with the original sets they don’t allow you to drop the same way FF coils do , looks all good then once you raise the car the front wheel drop and hang so low. Once they fix this issue I’ll buy another set for sure
You probably figured it out by now but usually you have to settle the suspension in. Meaning test drive it for a couple miles. Not sure how much difference it would make but it would have definitely dropped lower.
Congrats on the podium Jon! These updated coils look nice, but I'm skeptical about the spherical bushing in the front. Cheaper quality spherical bushings tend to wear quickly and introduce play into the front end over time.. We will see over the long-term how they hold up.. good honest review!
@@GarageBuiltHondas I saw DBG install his & he seems like like them enough but he also didn't seem to experience the same height issues (or didn't mention them), but I think they'll go "IN THE BIN" thanks Marty..... I agree with your assessment Jon, may as well spend the extra $100+ and at least get some Tein coilovers, honestly for a budget set up you really can't beat the good old Koni adjustable & Ground Controls coils.
can it be that they make smaller cups for lowering applications.. and the taller ones for a more stock look? I dont think its that big of a deal in essence but its amendable... give the custy both...
I had the black and yellow ones and they were decent but very stiff and they make binding noises. The fronts both blew out after about 10k miles of regular driving. I have purchased two sets of the COT6 black and blue coilovers from eBay for a 03-08 Toyota Matrix and the photo shows the correct coilovers but in the box they are the wrong ones and not the same as the photo. The box had a sticker on it that says 03-08 Matrix so I think they made a mistake at the factory or something. Could have been mislabeled somewhere else in the chain I guess but it is really frustrating. I wanted to try them out but I can’t keep driving on the blown coils.
John be honest, there’s no way you’re getting the most out of your car with these. I’ve had nothing but issues with my set and the company no longer even bothers to reply to my msgs about faulty product. It would take a whole lot of changes for me to ever consider these again.
@@GarageBuiltHondas Seriously, these are junk. You really need to look I to how to modify and revalve Bilstein shocks. These are not performance shocks or spring and intended solely for a cheap adjustable drop.
For the jump in price I'd wait a while considering they are now n same price range as other known name brands. Like my air ride better tho. Last pair of maxpeedingrod coilovers I had rode well just didn't ever even put more then 5 miles on them b4 started tearing into the car and bagged it.
thank you for your input i have maxpeedingrod coilovers on my crv and i maxed out my fronts and it didnt really lower it much in the front, the rear is a whole nother story im able to tuck the rear not bad for affordability tho
@@oneofthemnames3050 that’s what im thinking I recently got shorter 24k springs to go lower and maybe using mpc drop forks to get extra drop would need to look at the shock rod width and fit a proper extended top hat
any updates bro? i plan on either getting these or bfo ebay coilovers, they're also from MSR but supposedly a higher quality for my 06 accord sedan. it has 160k miles and oem shocks and struts
Just bought a set for my 1995 Integra came in yesterday. Just waiting for a good day to install I'm curious to see how they are now..I had a set on my 97 BMW 328 a few years ago and they were horrible after a year of use.
They added the spring isolator, but didn't take into account what that would do to the minimum height, especially on a "universal" set. Quality might have gotten better, but product research seems to be lacking still.
Great content!! Congrats well done Jon!!! By the way do you have a break line bracket that would work with Koni yellow for sale? If not, do you know where I get a set for the front? Thanks! CONGRATS again!!!
When you adjust the spring down are you not changing the preload of the spring and putting more of a load on the strut than the spring? Or am I wrong about how that works? Just curious just got a set for my 98 accord. And I actually tightened the springs a few turns to take more of a load off the strut because people have so many problems with them blowing out or just leaking.
currently am running the front forks of an 96-00 ek on my ef hatch, are these coilovers still compatible to puton my ef? thanks for the great content Jon!
Is it possible the shocks started leaking because they arent ment for the higher spring rate? And maybe rhats why your other set hasnt had issue yet with stock springs?
I've never read of rates affecting the shock life. I'd think at least 2 would be done then since they all withstood the same abuse. I think it's just quality control, they need to continuously building a shock that superior to previous ones they've built.
@@GarageBuiltHondas usually if you replace springs on shocks that arent rated for them your at risk of blowing them. I figured its the same for coil overs.....cheap ones anyways lol i could be wrong just thoughts. Im about to thow a set on a 01 civic. Kinda wish i got stiffer springs incase i run it at the track
Just got these for my EK and they clunk in the front... it's the top nut BUT I cannot get them to torque down! They just keep spinning. Got one of em somewhat tighter and it stopped clunking, other one won't grab at all. I see you take these apart and ... i guess my strut shaft is just rotating freely? I'm at a loss here. Any advice is v appreciated.
@@GarageBuiltHondas Thank you for giving such an insight into their product, ive been very tempted to pick these up however if you dont mind me asking How many track events/Miles have you covered? Ive Been thinking of using them for daily driving with the occasional track use.
Same. Mine blew out and started leaking in less than a year. Ride wasnt too great either. I bought some progress cs3 coilovers and I love them! I also like koni yellows with ground control springs
@@dw8730 not very low I didn't have mine maxed out. I daily my car on some pretty rough roads. I got my set brand new for 100bucks still in the box from a friend that had a 88 that didn't want to swap the rear control arms so they wudnt fit on his car lol. He ended up selling it anyway. They did last me long enough to save up for a better set tho.
I bought a used G35 and it had these yellow MAXPEEDINGRODS installed on it already and I have no idea how long ago that person installed them but I have only had the car a smidge over a year and the rear coilovers are BUSTED. I'm bouncing all over the god damn place and honestly dislike them very much lol. The front seem to be doing fine though tbh. Again idk how long ago they were put on but a little over a year for me and they were done
