One true MERCEDES BENZ's fan here but after having the all new CX-5 for a week now I gotta say the soundproof, comfortness and the feel of luxury of the car are almost the same as my S class 2015 I have to admit.

Mazda is the smallest car company in Japan but it is punching way above its weight class. Just imagine what they could create with an RD and marketing budget of Honda and Toyota. Mazda is the car company for people with a true passion for driving. Great job Mazda!

Dilemma time sensitive. Do you think the turbo is that good? My budget is under $400.00 a month lease and my options are. Would you rather have a 2020 cx5 with turbo but crappy infotainment or a 2021 cx5 no turbo but the new infotainment? Thanks in advance help is greatly appreciated.

@@interestedtech1 Hi there. I have been vehicle shopping for around a month now and it looks like I will be getting the 2020 CX 5 GTR soon. I would take the CX 5 with turbo over the non-turbo, no matter what little benefits I might miss on regarding infotainment/interior options. I test drove a regular CX 5 first. It was not even on my radar when I was visiting dealerships, but I was taken aback by the sleek design and upscale look. I was a bit disappointed when I got in the driver's seat and did not have much feeling of oompf behind the wheel. I then tried one with the turbo engine and it was the exact amount of extra pep I was looking for. Both handle closer to a car than an SUV/heavier vehicle would provide, but the 2.5T engine just goes a step above when needing that extra power to pass/ merge onto the freeway / any situation where you need that extra speed boost.
@interestedtech1
@interestedtech1 3 года назад
Thanks guys I think I'm gonna pick up the 2020 gtr since it's a great deal. A 2021 gtr is out of my budget. The more I taught about i the more I realize how little I use infotainment except for radio

I was looking for a small suv last July, checked out Toyota, Honda and Mazda and decided the best in class to be the Mazda. I purchased a 2023 cx5 signature with the 2.5 litre Turbo and absolutely love this vehicle. And to top it all off, it comes with 4 wheel drive, Apple car play, paddle shifters and heads up display. Yes unfortunately Mazda doesn’t sell in huge numbers and honestly am ok with that coz I own one and don’t want to see same vehicle every 5mins...it is more of a niche brand like Subaru. Just irks me that a lot of people are sheep and follow the common brands without even considering other brands like Mazda. I get the Mazda stigma from past about being owned by Ford and the rust issues but all those are gone and have been updated/improved but sad to say lot of people get stuck in past and just remember the old/past issues. I own one for 2yrs now and love the vehicle and how it drives! Oh and how reliable it is so far...

@@OMGWTFLOLSMH .. If your neighbor doesn't want to buy a Mazda, it's not because of the volume they sell. It's because he or she doesn't care for a Mazda. Subaru sells less then Mazda, but I never hear people giving them grief about it. That being said, both Subaru and Mazda rely on a dedicated group of buyers who are loyal to the brand, like myself. I just purchased the new CX-5 Signature and I absolutely love it. I decided to not trade in my 2015 Mazda 6, because I still love driving the car. Mazda has done a good job of increasing sales worldwide, but they will never sell as many vehicles as Toyota or Honda, and they don't have to. They need to keep doing what they are doing. Listening to their buyers and continuing to create a reliable vehicle that looks like it should cost more than it does.

I like how most people don't forecast cost of maintenance and service and factor that in when making a decision. You could buy a X1 or Q3 (base models) for the same price of this but have fun paying substantially more for parts, maintenance, and service. Heck I even look at the wheel sizes. 19" or 20" wheels sure look nice until you see how much more tires (and winter rims+tires) cost over getting something with a 17" wheel.

Yes, you are correct. However, when it come to larger wheels/tires some of us will gladly pay a premium for them. They aren't as practical or as affordable, but they look sooooo much better when done tastefully. I always keep two sets for my vehicle and actually prefer it that way.

The RAV4 actually has less rear legroom than the CX-5 - 37.8" versus 39.6". Both have 41" front legroom. We were really keen on the new RAV4 until we fitted our rear facing child seat in the back seat and discovered how it impacted on the front passenger seat. Granted the RAV4 has way more cargo space but legroom is a real disappointment if you want to carry tall passengers in the front seat with a rear facing child car seat. In fact the RAV4 is close to worst in class for total legroom - even less that the Tucson or Sportage.

Thanks, for the review and the conversation between a couple. It really helps to strengthen the review. I am a multiple Mazda owner here in the Detroit area and purchased the 2019 CX-5 GT Signature model in Soul Red about a month ago. I've been very happy with it. It's like a Starship compared to my old 2007 Mazda 6i 5-door and my wife's 2015 CX-5 GT. Very premium and lots of power. My only regrets are that the brown Nappa leather is a little too dark and the price was a little higher than I was looking to pay, but overall it's a great machine. I think Mazda sees itself as a Japanese version or alternative to say BMW or Audi.

@stefanTheFox 4 года назад
Nice review although is a bit on the bias side. So, infotainment booting is slow....well it is considering that it has a lot of stuff to load but do you actually leave in 15 seconds, no. Wireless charging..hm there aren't that much devices that can support this so why implementing something that will probably rise the price when you can do it the old way with a cable, seriously. Panoramic sunroof is useless considering that most of the times the car will be dirty so is a big NO NO. Paddle shifters, really? On a SUV. Unless is a Ferrari or a Lambo, you won't miss much and again will raise the price, but you can still put it in manual mode and drive it like a manual now that i would have like to see and hear about. Also you didn't mention the sport mode which probably on the turbo feels better. One of the Mazda's motto is "less is more" so yeah...all the gimmicks will raise the price and you can enjoy driving without them.

2 things I would prefer to have would be a panoramic sunroof (love mine now) as well as forward parking sensors. Having sensors currently up front has certainly helped in tight situations and with that long hood and flat nose it would be a welcome addition, in my opinion.

@rogerp4612 5 лет назад
The point of a panoramic sunroof isn't that it opens - mostly they don't open any further than a standard sunroof in terms of ventilating air. The point is how much much more light they let into the cabin, and how much more visually open and airy they make the cabin feel, particularly for rear seat passengers. Having a roof that basically disappears and opens up a view to the sky above is cool as hell. I'd miss mine if I didn't have it, even though I rarely open it. Anyway, sweet ride here by Mazda.

Great review Zack. The previous CX-5 was compelling, only let down by it's lack of Android Auto/Apple Carplay and what really kept me from short listing it during my recent shopping, the motor. It wasn't a bad motor but it was just simply too anemic for me. This turbo would have changed that considerably. If they can fix that stereo boot up speed that'd be all I'd want. It is really priced incredibly well in the segment for features and quality.

I totally understand that the OS is slow... but if we think about it... unless we're in an emergent situation, normally we don't turn the car on and immediately depart. We wait a few seconds (probably the same amount of time it takes for it to fully boot up) and then pull out or drive off.

Sorry folks but it doesn't appear that any of you drive or have driven a recent Lexus product. Phil is not totally incorrect in his assessment. As you move up the Lexus price scale the quality increases accordingly, as with all luxury brands. But in the $40-50k range, the materials and build quality between Lexus and the upper trim Mazda models is surprisingly comparable.

This is a very good and almost premium car and has a very excellent driving dynamics like all other Mazda cars specially it has a turbo engine now, but I agree with you guys that Mazda should address those issues you just mentioned because the competition are putting those items in their 2019 models and I hope it should be available in the next iteration. But if you ask me which brand I should buy now? It's definitely Mazda and CX-5 is the most I would prefer.

I test drove a new C-X5 two years ago, I thought the engine was buzzy and do not like the stubby body style. I'm sure the 19 has been much improved from the 17....Recently purchased a all new 2019 8spd 2.4 Hyundai Santa Fe SEL for $26,000 I am super happy with everything about it. + a 10 yr 100,000 mile drive trane warranty and 3 yr bumper to bumper made my choice. It has a large amount of safety features included, another + it's larger inside and out. IMO it's a bargain when compared to similar sized SUVs.....

Would Kia Stinger outsell BMW 5 series? Would Genesis G70 outsell Audi A3? The answer is likely No. People buy luxury cars to show that they can :) Range Rover is one of worst SUV in terms of reliability but sales never cease to increase. Driving a Range Rover is making a statement! Therefore, CX-05 will never affect X3 and Q5 sales.

I beg to differ...previous Volvo owner here...cross shopped RX, MDX, XC90 and QX60 before buying CX9 2yrs ago and love it no regrets and saved $10-15K! Practicality won over the badge/brand image...won’t see lots of sales switch from prem/luxe over to Mazda but it is possible!
@ridaalosman8030
@ridaalosman8030 5 лет назад
tekz I see your logic. However, Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti are considered "near luxury" according to Consumer Reports, and they are priced accordingly. By luxury, I was referring to Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Land Rover, Porche etc. For example, Mercedes GLS is classified in the same 7 seaters category as the Mazda CX-9. The GLS ranges between 88K and 140K in Canada. Purchasing the 140K GLS as opposed the CX-9 is making a statement.
@ztekz
@ztekz 5 лет назад
Well if you have lots of money to burn then yes go ahead on the luxuries...at end of day they’re all same transportation that take you from point A to B....you also have to consider cost of maintenance! $80-100K on vehicle and thousands of $$$ to maintain...bad investment on depreciating assets! The worst depreciation are on the luxury brands since they are not so popular then the more hit on depreciation vs mainstream vehicles!

I think it has to do with cars being part technical, part practical and part experience. The technical part is a lot of times a lot of numbers and you will get used to the power etc of a car. The practical part is more the day to day and how it feels the needs that you have. The experience part is the "magic" part, thats why they show how cool and sophisticated you are when driving that car. Each car and brand has its own reputation etc. And if you get butterflys each time you look at your base model stripped down Porsche Cayenne but for less you could buy a specced out Cx5, do what makes you feel the best about your choice. If people have a good amount of money to spend, that feels like a bit more than they normally would, they often want experience for that extra money. In a way I kind of get it. You could pay a couple 1000 more to get more options on your midlevel car OR you could buy a standard model high level brand. Each time you walk to you car you either would see a midlevel car brand or a hight level car brand that makes you think; wauw thats mine. I think its about the same why people buy a Tesla model s 70 or something and let the model be removed. They feel like they drive a tesla and get the attention of a tesla. Even though for the same money they could buy something way way more practical.

I liked driving a 2018 model and almost bought one. I went with a Forester and I found the rear seats were a bit tight behind the driver seat adjusted for me. I"m 6'2". I also found the cargo area to be lacking. I don't know if they can fix the slow boot-up with a S/W update. The hardware is probably not fast enough anymore. I am very happy with my Forester now. There are a few things I would like to change, but nothing's perfect.

I have a 2018 CX-5 GT and I love it. When I was filling out my Mazda satisfaction form the first thing I bitched about was the slow boot time of the MMI. While the CX-5 Signature is quiet, it is not as solid feeling as the 2018 Mazda 6 GT. I test drove the Acura RDX 2.0T and the Mazda CX-5 Sig. The Acura has a heft to it that the CX-5 lacks a bit. Not so with the 2018 Mazda 6 GT we own. The 6 has that heft and doesn't feel light. It feels tight and German-like. Plus the turbo in the RDX has punch to it. Kinda addicting. I think Mazda needs to put different suspension or dampers on the CX-5.
