New Mexico Rail Runner Express & Amtrak Southwest Chief, Albuquerque, Glorieta & Raton Subs. 2021-22.
New Mexico's intercity commuter rail system was bustling with trains, as the sun was setting on Bernalillo, on September 7, 2021. Bi-level commuter coaches with control-cab cars were pulled or pushed by streamlined MP36PH-3C passenger diesels. Burlington Northern Santa Fe ES44C4 no. 6744 was called to assist an almost four hour late Amtrak Southwest Chief and its ailing P42DC diesels. The Los Angeles-bound train crossed Lucero Avenue on the Rail Runner Express' Albuquerque Subdivision. Two private cars were on the rear of train no. 3, a restored 1954 Northern Pacific vista dome car, and a restored 1949 Union Pacific Pullman sleeping car. On April 9, 2022, the storied westbound Southwest Chief was graced once again with a luxury private passenger car from the glory days of railroading. Former New York Central heavy-weight business car "America," was built by the Pullman Company in 1927.
