On Monday, the Biden Administration announced the first-ever minimum staffing rule for nursing homes in the United States.
Opinions are split on the new rule with some saying it's what the healthcare industry needs right now but finding qualified employees could be tough.

They need to increase the ratio of nurse's aids to patients. 1 care giver to every 11 patients is impossible to give quality cars

Exactly!!! I thought for sure that is what this would be about! I haven't worked in a nursing home or assisted care in many years and that was the first thing I still thought of. Why has this terrible care been going on for so long and no one is addressing it????!!!!!

It comes down to quality care. Imagine you have 30 patients/residents on a unit, 2 aides are expected to feed, shower or bed bath, answer call bells, give out and collect meal trays and so on. 2 aides! This is how it is. The geriatric population is the forgotten. It's a shame. These facilities should have been proactive years ago. I work as a nurse in skilled living and to truly understand what goes on, these politicians should come and work in one for a day. For shit pay and getting mandated for constant call offs

Agreed, I'm an LPN in upstate New York. I agree two aids and me. We didn't get any extra pay for covid. No hazard pay know nothing. I have a 40 patient med pass Plus treatments, not to mention blood pressure medicine and diabetic medicine which is time-consuming because we have to get measurements. Not to mention feeding not to mention dealing with nursing AIDS crisis. Not doing their work eating patients food, hiding signing for stuff that they didn't do doing shortcuts on care. Talking up like they did a good job when they went at home or when nobody is around. Phony ass oh hi Miss Johnson how are you doing today crap. Not hydrating patients not doing proper personal Care passing it on to the next shift. I left when the nutritionist started ordering vitamins supplements like ensure that had to be 30 cc's a day etcetera. So now a patient gets a controlled, vitamins plus whatever other meds that they get, God forbid they have to get a shot 80 got to get a blood sugar a blood pressure hopefully nobody falls so you don't have to write a report of fall incident on that hope to God you don't get an admission. And that has nothing to do with your charity that you have to do doctor's orders that you have to transcribe in any computer work that you got to do. So next time I think you should add all of that I think team nursing is better you have two nurses two aides. One nurse does treatments one nurse pours the meds the other nurse passes them then they both work together to do treatments. What do you think😮

I hope there were also stipulations on base pay for staff in in nursing homes, because with private equity taking over more and more extended care/nursing home facilities, they're likely to squeeze the money to pay add'l staff out of some other part of the facilities budget, because they're not likely to want to cut into the profits to stockholders to pay extra staff. That's why those facilities are so short staffed, anyway. First thing private equity folks do when they acquire control of any healthcare facilities is cut staffing to the bone, offer wages that are as low as possible. They have no interest in the welfare of the human beings in the facilities, or in maintaining a competent staff.

Nice in theory, but how are you going to actually do this? My daughter is a RN at a nursing home and has been working double shifts for months because there is NO ONE TO HIRE!!! They never stop searching and have lost so many employees due to sheer exhaustion, they’re lucky to replace workers they have lost . She worked the Covid unit and is still suffering from long Covid symptoms as she’s doing all that she can to keep going. How far can you push these dedicated front line workers?

Thank you! Everyone knows we could use more staff, but it's not like we've got thousands of nurses just sitting on couches waiting to get a call. On top of that, so many nursing homes (something like 40%) are losing money! How are we supposed to get more staff when there's a nursing shortage, and these businesses are already behind financially?

There is a nursing shortage and there has been for a very long time. Where does the Biden administration think all these nurses are going to come from? We are already short staffed and this will only cause the ratios elsewhere to skyrocket. He needed to fix the shortage before he increased the demand.

All the nursing homes in Wisconsin already do better than the "new' rules for nursing care! This sounds like a bill to push more people to have home health care, which has been on the table for a while.

Minimum staffing will be difficult at McDonald's pay, in fact incentive is the key, not staffing. You want competency, quality, service? Pay for it and demand the best, it never fails. But if you treat heathcare workers like dispendable brainless robots, you socialize your way to trashcare.

THANK GOD! Qualified employees is definitely a concern. The problem is the pay scale for people who actually provide the care.....the 'dirty work'. Forgive the terminology but.....Just ask anyone who's been there, done that. Most of these folks have to work 2 jobs bc employers won't provide 'full time' status. It's a pretty bad situation and that is FACT!

This all sounds well and good, but do we have nurses just sitting on their couches waiting to get a call? We've got a nursing shortage in many areas of the country. On top of that something like 40% of nursing homes are *losing* money! So now we're going to just manifest more nursing staff, pay for more staff, and pay each member more money? Again, it sounds nice!

Its insane how seniors are treated in America! Again, we are supposedly the richest country in the world, yet we have garbage for when we need it most? This is a start but we should be WAY AHEAD on this. Way ahead. Roll out the robots if you need to but keep vulnerable people safe!
