To be honest it just isn’t fun to watch. We talked trash about MK11 but it was way better as an overall game. The cameo system is gimmicky. Most MK players want a classic 1v1. We mainly wanted them to improve the combo system from 11 and make all the variations into one variation. It feels like I’m watchin Injustice rather than a MK game. It’s not a balanced game, all characters should be on level playing field. 11 was in motion for 5 yrs, ppl took breaks and would comeback on it, just like MKX

I've been done with the franchise since after the Sindel DLC of MK11; and I was already over it be that time. MK1 is the nail in the coffin that has, finally, allowed me to "let go" of the childhood toy that MK once was.

I just can't with this game man. Almost a year in and they still don't even know what the fanbase wants. Season 1 (I know it wasn't perfect) had a good thing going with a lot of broken stuff but since then it's just nerf after nerf. Lowering health is such a lazy nerf too. Elden ring DLC is here, think I might just say bye to the 130 GB MK1 (INSANE for a fighting game) until they listen to the fans. This game had so much promise but legit is one of the worst if not the worst triple A games management wise and communication wise I've ever seen
They should have just carried on with mkx the variation system was fine. The game was faster gameplay wise and way more smoother for combos. Mk1 has just been such a mess
Unfortunately this game fundamentally isn't suitable for a tag game. Stuff like faster movement (which this game is faster than MK11 but not as fast as 9 or X (which is what it should be if it wants to be a tag game)), most the cast (outside of Johnny) having slower attack speeds, and ultimately not having mechanics that other assist base games have to make dealing with the assist better isn't in here. As long as that is still the issue, the balancing won't get any better.
The ambush kameos ruining any sense of neutral in the game. Ambushes just promote yolo game play with little to no risk. The characters where the buffs go
i'm proud to say, and for my own sanity, i didn't buy this bullshit. reviews exists so we can make an inform decision. hopefully, the reviewer is being honest. and that's all i ask. and when describing the game play of i game i have not played, it will or will not spark my interest in a game. MK 11 was my breaking point with NRS. i vowed to never buy another game from the studio because of how shit the game was and how NRS either the developers or their community managers, initially attacked customer/fans for criticisms about the game. unfortunately i had pre-ordered the game and did like the beta, then when the actual game released, it was different in some aspects from the beta. but i tried to like it, i tried to find why i was not having fun with MK 11. i tried to force myself to like MK 11. when reality hit that MK 11 was shit, i said, i'm done. MK 1's Kameo system sounds like straight ass! so shout out to the real ones being honest about this game. you helped me save my damn money.

I still remember when they showed some characters getting new moves. I thought maybe Nitara might have gotten some too because she's borderline unusable and needs tools to even compete with other low tiers and she got basically no changes that patch. I've always preferred buffs to weak characters over nerfs to strong characters, but it seems like in this game, they don't make sensible changes. Reptile wasn't top tier, but he certainly wasn't struggling. And then most of the cameos are either only used in very specific situations or not used at all. I really wanted to love this game, but the way it's being handled is just so bad.
Yea I uninstalled the game, they refuse to buff other kameos they didn’t try to fix cyrax they just reverted him to being trash. Don’t mind Khameleon as long as we have other good options. MK11 was a better game than this Pos imo.

Don't make MK games anymore." It almost happened with character action games because of Devil May Cry 2 (DMC3 saved the genre). It almost happened with fighting games because of Capcom Fighting Evolution (Street Fighter 4 saved THAT genre AFAIK). It practically HAS happened with Star Fox games with Star Fox Zero. Executives aren't smart. They misinterpret numbers all the time and they'll read these numbers like "Oh, people just don't like these games in general anymore" when they ACTUALLY say "People just didn't like THIS game." :P
I havent played mortal kombat in so long. I think the last mortal kombat i played was mkx. The games fight Choreograph animations just seem to get stiffer and less snappier each new mortal kombat. Characters are constantly being redesigned, reimagined, fighting stances changed, ect. There is no consistency in their designs over generations. Like why is every character 6'2 in these games? There are so many design choices that are so questionable both mechanically and character wise. Mk9 will forever be the best mk imo.
First and foremost: Those weren't real nerfs. The question is "what makes X character broken or overtuned?" Another way to go about it, "what do the majority of players complain about when playing against X character." The problem that Johnny had his plus frames. It is NOT fun to play against characters who, basically, never lose a turn. Instead of hitting his 1, 1 punch or hitting his jab frames, they nerfed something else completely. Of course Johnny would still be number one. Raiden and Cyrax were broken for similar reasons, minus Raiden doing 2 touch KO combos. They nerfed their main abilities by giving them more frames or giving their opponent more of chance to play the game. 🤯 What do you know! You nerf the plus frames and now nobody complains nearly as much about them, let alone plays them. Personally, I believe the power should be lowered (i.e.nerfs) that way the game is more balanced and more fair and players have to rely on skill rather than gimmicks and cheap tricks. I used to be completely opposed to buffs. However, I went on a philosophical journey and came to the conclusion buffs are not my enemy. I understand the power of buffing everyone to the top 1%'s level. The game would be more, in a sense, more fun, and in a sense, more fair. Either method would promote more character and playstyle variety and enable more characters freedom to do what they do best without collectively being crapped on by the same fraction of characters.
Game is trash!! I’ll never buy another NRS game at full price lol. It’s been almost a year and the game still feels incomplete. No content for casuals. Invasions sucks and is repetitive. Seems like every decision they make is a bad one lol.
I stopped playing after Omni Man came out. I'm just waiting on the game to get some serious change. Ermac and Homelander look fun but I just don't have excitement to play.
I also feel their narrative decisions are also very shallow and awful. As a kasual I may have been able to excuse the gameplay if the narrative wasn't also just as dry, shallow, and boring as the gameplay itself. A lot of the interesting characterization from the older games was discarded for the sake of the New Era and I wouldn't mind as much except that they barely did anything with the new setups. The narrative went for a lazy cop-out MCU multiverse ending and it just made me think as why should I care about the New Era when in another timeline Scorpion is actually Hanzo, Shao is actually a Khan, etc. Why go through the effort of making a new era at that point. It completely eliminates stakes and makes me not care about how you plan to change up these characters, which most of the changes are kinda stupid and arbitrary and don't make sense. I'm harping on this because the barebones narrative is kind of a microcosm of MK1 itself, in that is bland, shallow, uncreative, with mountains of wasted potential. I sincerely hope there is a course correction in the future as I want this franchise to do well.

I can admire NRS taking risks and making their games different. However, if you have no idea how to excute an idea properly, then you probably shouldn't try it. The kameo system wasn't even a good idea from the start. People don't like major changes to their games like this. Mortal Kombat is known for being a 1 VS 1 fighter. The game is nearly a year old, and I still see people telling NRS they want a no kameo mode, which they probably won't get in my opinion. To change the game and make it an assist based game was a very bad idea. Had NRS made this system work, it might of been enjoyable, but I still wouldn't want it in the next game. It would of been a nice little change, but it should not be carried into the next game.
I think theyre waiting a full year of the game being out or two so they can try and fool people into taking it seriously competitively, then when theyre fully working on next game, put in the no kameo mode. Cuz think about it it wouldnt be that hard to have been in by now. But if they did before all these kombat packs were done and idiots watch tournys for the shitty kameo gameplay, if they DID put it in, no matter what SOME people would play it and would show they themselves (NRS) werent taking it seriously either or didnt know what they wanted the main gameplay to be.

Every basic bnb does krushing blow level damage, they make fatal blows tied to your health still a thing while having normal meter so you can whiff a raw super then combo break. They think balancing the new shit gimmick should be affecting the health bars of the characters. Like Mk1 feels like they IMMEDIATELY made it as a response to "theres no combos in 11" and "wheres xyz character" so they slapped some shit together and said it was "So new and creative" by making tower assists the main gameplay thing and doing them worse. I gave it plenty of time to iron out kinks and wait for "content" kept playing as a fan of MK but im done with it now. Staight up feels like a cheesey mobile game and has the worst online connection of the modern fighters out right now. The story feels like a weird spin off TV show just about character arcs. Having played the genre since the early 90s, I could see the game was trash the moment I laid eyes on it... Even more so than I did with MK11, which, at least, _looked_ the part.
MK11 was the Fujin mirror edition and MK1 is the Johnny Cage Mirror edition featuring John Cena. But hey, as long as the game has 200 viewers on Twitch and 20 of the same "pros" playing the game, NRS is happy somehow.
It is absolutely disrespectful how NRS went about this game. All they worry about is the 20 - 30 professional player and not the tens of thousands of fans. And a year later the game is still incomplete with modes that cannot be selected. They even tried to "fix" the game with PAID characters. Just sad as a Midway era fan. Yeah, they need to take a chance on tag mode. Data miners found the code for it at one point. I don't think people would mind being able to select between 1vs1, kameo or tag.
A lot of people want a no kameo mode. I don't think they will ever get one. People just need to accept that this is what the game is. If they don't like it, time to move on. There would have to be a lot of balance changes to make a no kameo mode. There would also have to be forward throw animations for characters. NRS is not going to put in that type of work. Even if they did make a no kameo mode, then the kameo mode we have now would die. I think most people would only play the no kameo mode. They basically would have put all that work into the mode for nothing.
Am I the only one that feels like we should be able to switch characters in ranked? Being someone who plays like half the roster I MAINLY get annoyed at the balancing when I'm FORCED to stay in a bad match-up for an entire set, but the pros get to switch characters in tournament? C'mon now

Why did they kill cyrax again? He didn't even pose a threat and they had data on him to see if they want him to stay or revert him out the game. Took the lazy route and just took him out again
Cyrax was the second best cameo in the game behind Cam, he was the best at what he did by far. He has to be nerfed but so does Cam(she needs alot of work)

People whining about Cyrax nerf are really insane, instantly the Raiden/Baraka + Cyrax flooded some ranks on league and people was abusing chip damage as crazy, anything + unsafe special + chip + cyrax + chip = SAFE, then repeat. Disgusting as first day... Chameleon at least require more skill, and constant awareness, plus it doesn't chip like mad.

If the NRS made A Mortal Kombat 9 remaster, it would have be more than an update in graphics. It would require some balance because Kabal is broken in that game. I would also want new kontent that the original didn't have, and brutalities. I'm guessing if NRS made a remake of that game, it would be $70.00. An update in graphics won't cut it for me.
@@theretrogamingnerd3316 I feel it’s balanced, a lot of characters were broken, Jax reset combos 100%+ in the corner with full meter, cyrax reset combos that were 70-90% damage full screen, Sonya blade was really good, sonicfox showed how Sonya was good, kitana was pretty good at spamming as well, there was a lot of brokenness involved not just kabal which made it fun to use broken vs broken
@Eric16ss I don't remember much of Mortal Kombat 9 since it was so long ago. I do remember Kabal the most about that game though. A remake would not be a bad idea. It would probably kill off Mortal kombat 1 if NRS made that.
It's crazy to me that I choose SF over MK today. As a GEN X'r I literally grew up w/ both SF and MK. At a time when they were both setting the world on fire too. I always leaned MK. Not anymore. _NRS_ is the dumpster fire you should be talking about...
I hated it since the beginning. I loved the Variants more because atleast they didn't feel awkward to use. I gave up on MK1 for so many reasons, and the main reason I gave up was for the Kameo system. It never felt satisfying

I knew mk was all downhill when 11 came out, they had slow, stiff movements, bright superhero colors like injustice the game looked and for the longest was called injustice 11 they even took inj long cinematic cutscenes Mk should be dark, dirty and grimey looking

Actually, making Shadow Kick - on wiff and Block will help immensely. If Johnny has at least 1 weakness that will help this games meta. Let me give you all an example on how to do a nerf right. KILLER INSTINCT. Season 2 of the game gave the main Balanced character JAGO a Health recovery mode. Whenever he lands a Fire ball he recovers health. People hated that and wanted it nerfed. Sometime later he got a Nerf. Not to his Health buff, but his Wind kick ( basically Shadow kick ) was made - on whiff and block. Players hated that at 1st. But after some time those same players realised they stopped complaining about him. They wer like, "Wait I can actually fight this character?" So in conclusion The K.i devs realised that the main problem was JAGO had no bad match ups. By giving him a weakness that made the JAGO player think a little more helped immensely. To quote the DEVS. "Treat the disease. Not the Symptoms."
So Cyrax gets nerfed again and khameleon is still runnin wild. Why did nrs even bother to try and be sneaky by buffing Cyrax just to nerf him again immediately smh
Definitely in terms of content but it was the first MK game I was incredibly disappointed in just largely due to the gameplay, in my opinion. Before MK1, there was a chance that they would improve upon MK 11's weaker elements, but yeah, nah, we are now in the MK Dark Ages, and we are probably never getting out of it.

That's why dropping the distinction of "archetypes" (rush-downers, zoners, grapplers etc.) was such a grave mistake. As MKTB has broached, if every character plays almost identically -- either because of some universal mechanics which render everything around them, moot; or because the characters themselves are simply copy-pasta clones (MK1 suffers from both these issues, as does Tekken 8 to a less extent; SF6, somewhat from the former) -- then, minute differences within the framework of those universal mechanics (Kameos / shin jabs / throws; Heat Burst / Rage Art; Drive Rush / Drive Impact / throws) will be exacerbated to "broken" status. Compare that to a game where the roster is diverse in gameplay -- with each character having a "meta" very specific to them, and the character alone -- even if there are "O. P." characters (which is inevitable), the game still remains fun to learn, play, and watch. MK1 is not fun to learn (because there's nothing to learn) play (because it's the same one or two BnB's x infinity), and coma-inducing to watch (obviously) -- the triple-whammy death knell for a fighting game (if not, franchise). Moreover, whereas SF and Tekken have some good will to trade, MK / NRS do not; and for MK1 to fail in the eyes of the FG community -- over and above whatever sales numbers it ends up with -- it will be very, very difficult for an "MK13" (?) to make people forget that.
One of the devs said to do one change they have to confirm it with multiple upper management to apply that change, which slows down the process significantly. Their development structure is outdated and convoluted , which is sadly the case for most tech companies. They should really try to make a experimental pipeline and let one dev that knows about balance , change willy nilly. And this experimental mode should be available to players, so based on community feedback they can do a permanent change. If they are too afraid to do it. But i guess they don't care about this game anymore
Yeah most of the cameos dont actually do anything useful and the ones that are useful only have one or two good moves, and most of this moves don’t even look cool.
This MK is the first one that made me drop it for another fighting game after being loyal for 28 years lol. I guess NRS fired all of the good employees that gave us the beauty of MK9 and MKX. Oh well, fuck em.

You know, I didn’t want to get on the conspiracy train but I honestly think they buffed Cyrax back to day 1 before Final Kombat specifically for Sonicfox. They saw that he won the first major with the Cyrax kameo and since he’s NRS’s poster-boy, they thought they’d make sure he’d win again. Ironically, he didn’t touch Cyrax for Final Kombat. Give me one good reason, besides this, that they’d buff him, not include the buff in the patch notes and then the NEXT day nerf him back. This, by the way, was all after Sonic posted on Twitter how he’d leave MK after Cyrax was nerfed.

As if the original creators of this universe and mechanics around are not here. Being an MK fan since the 90's sucks!! Never liked S.F. or Tekken. K.I. was decent & even liked Primal Rage & Golden Axe.... but those games are dust. It sucks; because the game IS boring! The idea for a Lui Kang led universe; turned SH!T ; oh cant escape fate? What a lack of imagination. Kameo idea was a great way to include more characters;; but kack of execution; turned it to crap! Online is Toxic to say the least, Pro scene is a Joke, Offline??? Invasions is the crappiest b.s. I've ever seen. Now this 1 month delay? Then there will be a promise;; New content, expansion, new characters.... Just Pay & People will sadly; & it will be more SH!T in the long run!! Well Tom atleast you'll never run out of NRS idiots to bash. They deserve it; but bro, that brick wall hurts after awhile. If they'd give my $120 back; I'd give them good ideas.... I've bought and owned every MK Game except for the spin-offs and imo, they're becoming lamer with each interation. Imho, they peaked at MK 2, MK 9 and MK 10. MK 11 is ok but MK 12 (M1K) is a step back. But then again, I'm just a filthy casual so what do I know? I know I've had M1K since day 1 and I may have played maybe 6 time's at most. I'll stick to MK2, 9 and 10. 😊
Nowadays alot of game devs aren't really gamers or even play the game they're working on, so I'd say that's probably one reason the game is so poorly balanced. But couldn't agree with you more regarding your thoughts on MK1 and the community.
