Guys - put smaller rocks in a bucket, fill it and then bring the bucket to the truck to empty. Saves a lot of walking back and forth with smaller loads.

Hi you two! I know you’re young, but prevention is ALWAYS better than cure. Once you hurt your your backs it will never be the same even if it heals. Use back supports when you’re lifting heavy stuff like your heavy stones, etc.

Dan and Laura, You two are the real deal.. no bravado or pretense. That is refreshing to see on RU-vid! You work hard and seem to genuinely enjoy each others company and you both have a great sense of humor! We enjoy watching your progress on the land. It takes time and patience and learning as you go along. As the seasons turn, you'll get to know your own land, the micro-climates, the drainage, the plants and creatures that live there too. And you are young....you have lots of time! You get to change your mind, switch direction, re-vamp, re-prioritize and make your own path regardless of other people's well intended advice! Its your land and your project. Have fun! Take your time! Thanks for inviting us along on the journey! Mary and David

Great work. Check the rocks aren't the type that explode before building a pizza oven, I know you like learning from mistakes, but probably one to avoid! (Assuming the stones on fire pit are a bit back from flames)
@Offred
@Offred Год назад
Agreed! I wanted to make sure they know that not all rocks are suitable for being close to high heat for that reason. I’m not sure how to tell, but they could always line the pit interior with fire bricks or something safer?

I spent the first seventeen and a half minutes watching and thinking "Get a new wheelbarrow!" Such a relief when you did. Warning over the heavy lifting - DO avoid hurting yourselves! Any self-inflicted physical damage will come back to get its revenge in another twenty years, if not sooner. I'm looking at you, Dan!

What drew me in at first was the stone work of your barn. In my life I have done some stone work. And,, I mean that in an old style,,, standing at a bench in the yard with a hammer and chisel. Whacking away at rocks. Selecting, fitting, trimming, raking the face, then lift and motar into place. Your barn is exceptional. Beautiful. Lovely. And the man or woman that did it, may be long buried, or not,,,, in either case their pride, and skill fairly glows in that work. And then I noticed you, Laura,,,, and Dan. I think the barn may be in good hands.

Great to see the progress you are making at your Homestead, and all the hard work you are doing to create it. Please Dan, avoid lifting heavy items using your back, lift with your knees and minimise the strain on your back. Maybe search up some safe lifting techniques on RU-vid. We only have one back, if you injure your back the injury can be permanent and is unlikely to properly heal. My wife and I have a small property in the Castelo Branco district and wondered how much you paid for the wagon load of stone ?

Romance turns to work real quick with a lot of jobs around the home, but NOTHING gives the feeling of accomplishment and ownership when you complete them! You guys work well together and are making a wonderful home for you and your family! I wish I could supply you guys with a small gas powered tiller. It would make putting those stones in SO much easier! While not the preferred method of installation, I have used a tiller to really loosen the soil then using water, turned the lose soil into a nice thick mud. I put the stones into the mud making them as level as possible by smacking them on the sides. When the mud dried I was left with very stable and level stones. I suppose your spades could accomplish the same thing but the soil would not be as fine or as level underneath. Still, in a small area you may want to try the technique to see if it will work for you. I have used this method in 4 different areas and in all but one the affect has been wonderful. In the odd one out, the stones were to small for the depth I tilled the area and some of them sunk in a little to deep.

Hi Laura and Dan. How about instead of retiring Tony, you give him a new lease of life as a planter. Plant some lettuce, tomatoes, spring onions, and / or herbs. Things that can be quick to grow rather than full crops. Also, was there much stone dust left? If so, my thinking is to get it in the boggy entrance to your land. Your fire pit is higher stacked than i expected you to do, but means all should be safe.You could see if there is anything that you can rig up as a bushmans cooker, basically a cooking tripod to cook over the fire. Well done on the hard work x

Hello there. You will have to watch it when you have fire's that they are not to big, because stone sometimes explodes and fly's allover the place and can be Daindruss. So be careful. If you are building wall's it is easier to build with concrete blocks for a start and clad the outside of it with stone.

There is still some life in Tony the Wheelbarrow lololol Save the parts for other things. The handles can be repurposed for a wooden barrow. The tray can be used for a weed container or a planter or a rinse sink. Parts cost money. Even the busted wheel could have a new life as a hawk deterrent if hung above a chicken area and allowed to swing in the wind. You just have to think outside the box. Continue the good work :o)
