Still on my quest for the ideal tape drive to load my Oric games, and after some disappointment with the SONY TCM-939 (see my other video • New-Old-Stock Unboxing... ), I found that somebody in Norway (where I leave) was actually selling for a decent price a brand new, never used, Philips portable tape player.
So I bought it, received it yesterday, and I opened it in front of the camera... because after all these things are only new once, and there are not many of these in the world anymore.
Hope you like it, I tried to add some overlays to make the documentation more readable (and also because I'm really not good at dealing with the camera being off center and the auto-focus not being happy!)

These things used to eat through batteries like there's no tomorrow! That's a very nice find man :-)

True, what I'm wondering is if I should try to get a 3V DC adapter for it, or if it would work fine with rechargeable AA batteries (the problem with these is that they deliver 1.2v instead of 1.5v, so that could cause issues with motors).

Hello Dbug, thank you for your video. I’ve bought the same and I’d like to change the belt. Would you mind to send me some scans of your user’s manual that shows how to open the player? I’d appreciate a lot. Thank you!

The "manual" is really just this folder paper with the same thing repeated i multiple language, and basically it's just what you see in the video at 05:19 and 05:39, there's nothing about how to open the device. I've done a quick search, there are other Philips 6595 devices but they are not this tape drive, so no service manual as far as I can see. Looking at the device, I'd say that to open it you need first to remove the trap-door, there's a small screw on each side of the hinge (be careful with the spring). From there you can access all the other screws. If you do that, make sure to take photos, or film the disassembly so you can easily find out how to reassemble it, and make sure to put all the screws on a stable surface (possibly a magnetic holder) in the proper order to put them back in the right order because it's possible that some are longer than others.

Hello @@DbugII, thank you for your quick answer and help. I’m going to try to remove the screws and open it and let’s see.

@@bobsan65 make sure to use a proper screwdriver in good condition, typically these screws are very small and tend to be easy to "strip" when using the wrong type, and when that happens, you are in a whole world of hurt 😓

Hello, would you sell this walkman?

I understand why you would be interested, but it's the one I'm using to listen to my tapes, I was very lucky to find one in such good condition and happen to work fine without any issue. Have you tried searching on the Facebook marketplace, or Vinted?

@@DbugII Yeah, i completely understand, i wouldn't sell it too :) I'm keeping on searching on various platforms, hopefully i'll find one

@@tamasbottka3451 Good luck! Sometimes you can find some which are not working and would only require a belt replacement... but portable tape drives are so compact that it can be a real challenge to service them and then put them back together. Obviously you could also get a brand new "cheap" thing like these "tape to mp3", but the sound is very bad, some models are only mono, and the whole think feel clunky. And of course the top of the top are some of these high-end Sony Walkman, but these cost their weight in platinum these days 😕

@@DbugII Yeah i agree. Sony's are just too overpriced, from the price of a DD series model, i can buy about 3 high-end models from other manufacturers like Philips, Sharp, etc... And they still provide an excellent authentic sound!
