I worked for Sony in the UK at their manufacturing facility at Bridgend in the late 80's and specifically worked as an electrical technician in the tube making plant on breakdown maintenance of the plant. I'm going to comment as I watch the video and the first thing to me (11:50) as it's a later generation is that the anode is underneath the tube, not on top. I think your warning of voltages is not strong enough, the tube can kill you with the power off from stored static, I did an electronic apprenticeship and had many static shocks from b/w monitors removing the anode where the power supply would have been about 14KV, about the same as car HT ignition systems at that time. The big tubes had 36KV plus as the anode voltage and enough current to kill you so boys & girls don't do this at home. ( at 25KV vacuum tubes start emitting x-rays the same as a medical x-ray machine and that's why the front panel (screen) is so thick with leaded glass). An anecdote, some tubes didn't pass the final line testing (done by a human at that that time) and so would be then tested in a single offline jig by a more experienced operator who's main tool was a rubber mallet, I kid you not. I'm digressing sorry, but sometimes the robots hadn't fitted the aperture grill correctly into the front panel glass supports so by hitting the the front panel or from the side the operator could seat the AG properly. There were a lot more rubber mallet procedures. Sorry for digressing but the offline test machine the operator had to insert the anode by hand and fit DY coils etc (power off) and so I was standing behind the operator testing a tube with a fitter on my shift and the anode fell out and the fitter went to re insert it and he had a huge electrical shock and in his words 'it got me before I grabbed it (the anode)'. 14:00 the electron gun (plus the front panel) were what made the tube, also Sony used very high quality components and their TV's had an average lifespan of about 13 yrs which was pretty good considering high voltages were involved. 15:46 apologies for jumping the gun 19:30 probably electrolytic capacitors drying out slowly after having no voltage put on them for so many years and you're also lucky to be able to adjust things in the digital world compared to when I knew these tubes. It's 2:30 am so have to sign off, last thing from me I stopped working for Sony before they started making totally flat screens, straight vertically and curved horizontally. One last thing, after the physical air evacuation there was a 'getter' process where a chemical reaction exploded removing more air (down to 10 to -9 tor air molecules being 10 miles apart ..) but the tube was a bomb until the front panel had been banded ( so many explosions during this phase) and then they went through about 250KV ac & dc across the tube to blow up any particulate remains. apologies for the novel, surprised I remembered so much from nearly 40 yrs ago.

14 inch trinitrons are usually deep because they have 90º deflection, larger sets used 110º so the larger ones are proportionally shorter.

Tubes have to be designed to compensate for the earth's magnetic field, and that is flipped in the southern hemisphere vs. the northern. Some CRTs were made for the southern hemisphere, but Sony put northern hemisphere tubes in southern hemisphere sets by just flipping them upside-down! That tube is a long boy because it is a 90-degree deflection, and that is why the convergence and geometry is so good. 110-degree tubes are harder to align.
@Zacabeb
@Zacabeb Год назад
There's an interesting anecdote about this, although I don't know if it's true. Back in the 80s and 90s, Bang & Olufsen were making TVs that were very slimmed down, following the contours of the CRT. This however meant they'd have to put a bump on the cabinet over the EHT connection. To work around this, they had Philips supply them with CRTs made for the Southern Hemisphere so that they could put them in upside down in sets sold in Europe and the US.

@elixyr83

In the UK we were blessed with RGB Scart, which has now become a popular mod in North America. We did have to settle for 50hz compared the North American 60hz, but RGB Scart is just much better than RF, Composite, or S-Video. It was a strange time. I was lucky enough to obtain a B&O Beocenter1 which had RGB Scart and 60hz support in the UK, and I modded my consoles to run in 60hz. The ultimate experience.
@Richo5566
@Richo5566 26 дней назад
In the 80s, the Sony TVs imported into Australia did have RGB Scart as those were made in the UK. Sometime in the early 90s, the TVs were imported from Asia and they only had composite and S-Video on the larger sets. It was definitely painful for console gamers.

Something I didn't mention yesterday, after certain parts of the process the tubes would be highly charged statically (sometimes even smashed tubes even still had some static charge) and the overhead conveyors were like ski lifts so if we had to remove them because of a breakdown we would discharge them to earth, there were a few times we got caught out and involuntarily chucked the tube and shouted 'EYES' even though we wore safety glasses at all times. A small tip if you regularly work on crt's, clip an earth to your terminal screwdriver before you prise the anode out, don't be afraid of discharging a tube by earthing, it was a standard procedure for us at that time. And also always make sure the power is 'OFF' unless you're trained, for me it's the biggest mistake non trained people make. I check with a multimeter before I put my fingers anywhere.

Hey man. I found your channel and i watched you open up this tv. It gave me an idea id like to share with you if your interested. There seems to be no RU-vid videos of anyone getting there hands on a hotel tv. You know when you go to a hotel and they have those special TVS that don't have any inputs on them. So you cant plug in your own stuff, kind of forcing you to use there services. Anyways I would be thrilled to see one of those opened up for the first time. I'm surprised this hasn't been covered yet on RU-vid. Hopefully one day you can pursue this somehow. Would love to see inside a hotel TV just to see how all that works.
@TheRetroChannel
@TheRetroChannel Год назад
All the hotel TVs I remember seeing did have inputs but they were sometimes disabled in software. Most TVs have a hotel mode that limits their function and is enabled or disabled by a key combination on the remote control. I managed to break out of hotel mode when I was staying at a place a couple of years back, and got access to all the channels available at the hotel, including the "adult entertainment" ones. Unfortunately I couldn't figure out how to get back into hotel mode before I left, so the next person who stayed there may have got more than they bargained for when they flicked through the channels

Was great for gaming for a few years, aside from the bloody settings being zoomed in (making game GUI a bit hidden in some titles), no remote and AV plug somehow jammed INTO the shell, that cover lid jammed UP! 😂 Despite those flaws, $20 well spent for the Mass Effect trilogy and movies on a HUGE screen!

had a chance for a new 24” Panasonic but I passed up on it. Thought 80 USD was a lot in 2017. Lol

So CRT’s made in this period are cost reduced? I have a 32 inch Sony Trinitron 32FS210 which says it was made end of 2006, so I am hoping it is good because the composite quality is great on my SNES, but the outside of the TV set is very beat up. Someone had it in their garage for like a decade due to the weird rust on the inputs on the back

The service menu on Sony TVs is a godsend. I wish my Mitsubishi had one (maybe it does, but I can’t find any info).

I wonder how these things can last when they are not used at all, either new or just turned off for years. Do they still get used by not being actually powered on?

I don't even know where to start looking in my country to find something like this. Just imagine having 7 brand new fw-900's and knowing that for at least 70 years you will always have a unique monitor working perfectly.
