The narrator makes this unwatchable. We GET it! It's a dark and serious story without that fake brooding tone.

26 years later and this documentary still pulls you in like the first day I brought it home from the shop.

Great documentary, very different from most music documentaries: the TV game with Keith Allen, the narrator's voice, the "informal" conversation between the four of them (shot in Montreux, for the record), the fact that it also speaks about frustration, misunderstanding and resentment (Gretton's no comment for instance), all these things make this documentary very new order like. It's cheesy at times and cool at others, it's happy and sad, it's avant garde and lame and it's never where you thought it would go. That's New Order.

I loved Joy Division as a teenager and then New Order as a young adult. They defined us back then. I finally got to see New Order somewhere around 1990 in Milwaukee and it was an outdoor concert in the summer. Great memories!

So as a young punk, I bought Movement loved it. Power, Corruption & Lies I bought second. But from the US I never knew where they came from. Joy Division. I never knew that band. But now I do. Wow. Now I understand how the song started. Cheers!

Hah, never knew what Tony Wilson was like in real life until I watched this, but Steve Coogan played him fucking perfectly in 24hr pp. This documentary is literally just the band taking the piss.

What I learned, is these guys, come from a social culture of going to the pub and having a crack. Joking around, having fun. They will pretty much joke about anything. "Who is the laziest band member? Ian." They are not going to to be sitting together talking about their deep dark feelings, most of the time. Which makes it understandable how things happened. It seems to be, "Yeah, life is hard, stick it out with us."

Unpopular opinion: I like the narrator. She sounds like Sigourney Weaver. I get the sense that people are more bothered by the American accent. 🤷‍♀️

A good and proper documentary absolutely ruined by this over-the-top narration.. they had to have signed off on this because they all did the interviews and everything is first-hand so maybe I got added after the fact... it's not even needed

Bono singing the wrong words at 10:33 is rly funny

8:20 introducing the manager the bloke sitting in front takes a big swig out of a can of Stella live on TV. Love the old un PC days enjoying yourself and not upsetting anyone else because would mind their own business instead of interfering with yours because now all of of a sudden they don't agree with you being happy or enjoying yourself.

I'm at minute 4 and having a hard time not closing it cause the narrator is insufferable. Why that pompous has-been Bono? That's it...I'm out at 10mins.

The Internet: Destroying the mystique of New Order for 2 decades and counting. Seriously. I grew up loving this group without knowing ANYTHING about them, because In America there was very little to find about them. That mystique was a big part of the appeal.

Loved seeing them sitting around laughing about their misfortunes....and Barney calling Tony Wilson a ‘bleedin’parasite’ with a ‘missing left tooth’ to HIS FACE! Always felt New Order were having a laugh at themselves. This is such a train wreck and IMHO it’s what makes it so hilarious. Hacienda being a ‘yacht showroom’ and Stephen having to pay to get in! And yes....that narrator! 😂 Love New Order!

Why the Bono flashes? He's nowhere near the talent as Joy Division or New Order.

This debuted on TV the same night as they played at Reading in 93. I left the gig and ran home up to Caversham heights where I was staying and caught this on tv. These days I'm totally incapable of doing that but at least I could afford a taxi now :)

Couldn't understand what they were saying, so I turned on closed caption..... still have no idea what they were saying because A) closed caption couldn't understand/ translate, and B) even when I could discern the words, I don't know UK slang/vernacular. So I was going to see New Order at the Gorge in Washington state in 2005 but my oldest son was due to be born around the same time so I didn't go . Flash forward to 2020 New Order and Pet shop boys are coming to the Gorge again!!...........COVID hits concert cancelled!

Everybody loves the music. This creates an immediate problem for people, especially filmmakers, who are using a less popular cultural medium (filmmaking) to talk about the most loved cultural medium (music) and most importantly, to represent a cultural medium that creates the most personal response that people have to culture. Let's face it, a lot of people hate film. It's a cultural expression that's harder to approach; it contains a degree of difficulty in developing a full understanding and a response, unlike music that is largely emotional in its appeal. Like all expensive cultural production (including making commercial records) filmmaking often has to submit to market forces. These forces can often derail the original objective that the filmmakers started out with. Hence the narration and Bono. Fans of JD and NO are culturally opposed to Bono for no good reason other than any band as commercially successful as U2 has to be suspicious. The music fans (based on the comments in this post) also don't appreciate the Quiz Show trope or the 'actressy' narration style. The music fans are probably also unaware of how their obsession is with a cultural object on the margins of culture. How would you, as a filmmaker sell this project to investors, (people who are as remote from popular culture as Martians)? I know: let's get a name-actress to read the narration; let's get Bono and Quincy Jones in as recognisable music industry figures, then, if the potential film punters don't recognise the names of Ian Curtis, Tony Wilson or Bernard Sumner, we can get them in with Bono and Quincy Jones (and maybe, if their English, Neil Tennant). How do you avoid the lazy technique that you can see in other (lesser?) NO/JD documentaries, films like Shadowplayers, Joy Division or Decades? Apart from venturing into works of fictive drama like Control and Twenty-Four Hour Party people, how do you as filmmaker minimise the inevitable talking head? It's always tough to please the public but, as it is with any presentation of information, you, the audience, just take the bits you want and ignore the rest, and this film has more than just a few good bits.

I still like this documentary. One of my favorite parts starts around 39:49, where Bernard talks about Factory buying any old nightclub. The stories they all must have! "Free drinks, cheap!" LOL! Then my other favorite part is right after this with Stephen launching into a hilarious speech about his personal experiences regarding the Hacienda. Still makes me laugh and smile. I kinda hope that this nomination for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will help bury the hatchet between Bernard and Hooky, but I'm not either of them and I can't hold my breath. I can only hope for the best!

A bit of nostalgia. I'm going to be 60 this month and Joy Division and New Order were both often on the turntable or in the cassette player first when I was in the military in Greece (I think that's when it was) like 1983-1984 something like that and then all the way through after I got out in 1988 and up to whenever Brotherhood came out which was the last album by them I bought. I don't know what happened after that. I don't remember if they broke up or they didn't play them on the radio or why I didn't buy anything after that. I loved everything both bands ever did that I heard. Just solid writing, playing, singing, lyrics always great.
