I think this looks good. The old heads were severly oversized. It's a bit weird that Kasrkin have bigger heads but it's not like it's gonna be noticeable when they are actuall on the table.

The Kasrkin are inspired by the old grenadiers, and elite guard units, many of whom had height requirements ... so they are meant to be taller.

Sorry guys, small mistake: The Kasrkin model's base is 28 mm bases, not 32 mm! Also note, Skitarii originally come with 25mm bases, but I chose to use 28mm bases for mine as I think they look better this way.

The new Guardsmen have a normal sized head that matches true scale. This is because of the heroic scale, the old guards have a giant head, like other parts of the body, but the growth is small, which is why a little more and they will be dwarves. The new models are definitely good, I like them.

The kasrkin proportions seem a bit off compared to everything else - I am also curious how the new shock troop model lines up against a scion (who always seemed a bit squat to me). The Vostroyan are gorgeous models though.

Unfortunately, I don't have Scions in my collection, but from what I've seen, Scions are in line with old plastic Cadian proportions, they stand just a mm taller.

According to Dawn of War, some Kasrkin have limited genetic and biological upgrades (nothing compared to Space Marines though), so that's why they're physically larger. Not sure if that's still canon.

I don't think it is necessarily desirable to have perfectly proportionate models. Some distortion makes painting easier and more enjoyable.

For this particular unit, I actually prefer the simplicity of the old Cadian shock troop design. It's not oversculpted, classic/iconic look, and has tons of character IMO. The new sculpt could be from any game system or manufacturer for all I know.

Perhaps the planet would have held longer... if those heads were a little bigger... I can't say I'm entirely a fan of this new proportionality. I think that exaggeration, to a tasteful-degree, provides a better platform for the painter to supply detail at this scale. Those heads... are smol... :(

i've been meaning to buy cadians for over 10 years, was sad to see they had gone. i like the 2000s ones better. the new look great, but a lot more like generic sci fi soldier to me

It is good to know that 32mm and 25mm differences between models has an effect on gameplay and painting techniques most likely.

Short story: The miniature designers felt like it. Lore reason is probably that Kasrkin are selected from the strongest men and women only, the blurb in the Codex says they are at the physical peak for unaugmented humans.

That's not new. The old guard models were just as tall as the firstborns, around for decades. Some of the metal regiments were actually taller like the vostroyans. The problem is they made the original marine models wide not tall

Kasrkin are elite cadians, they got some gene enhancements in lore, as well at they are actually the same height as old kasrkin

@@financialproblems9308 you mean the old metal Kasrkin? I have some of those, I think they look tiny compared to other guardsmen haha. they were probably made before the scale creep really kicked into gear.

I decided to not immediately judge the new cadian shock troops, maybe they would grow on me. But now we're 8 months further and I still vastly prefer the old Cadian soldiers. Their proportions are more 'warhammer' style. There's no idiotic knee-pads. The old Cadians are perfect in that what they're wearing is ill-fitted one-size fits all bulk material. They're not supposed to be well-equipped soldiers. They're supposed to be cannon fodder.

Nice comparison. I was a bit concerned about the size since I have guite a few old ones! Have you tried to swap heads between the old and new ones? and if, how does it look?

You can probably guess from the side by side picture, but actually not too bad if you're used to the proportions of the old models. I think the new Cadian's heads are really small, and I would have preferred them to be more the size of the new Kasrkin heads.

@@stahly_taleofpainters There are a lot of good things to say about the new models when it come to details, but the headsize...hm? I could easily have lived with different kind of opgrade sprues to the old ones like the one GW have now. That said, I still look forward to the new boxset 😃

So, to anyone that has this set, are the heads from the new upgrade sprue too big for the new Cadian Troops seen here? Many of those heads have a lot of personality, and it would be sad to see them not fit properly, considering how new they are!

Well, they will be more in line with the size of the heads of old Cadians. If you only use the old heads / heads from the upgrade sprue, it will be fine, but mixing with the new very small heads and helmets will make the old ones really stand out.

Hab ich vor vielen Jahren mal entschieden, da ich selber auch hauptsächlich in englischsprachigen Foren unterwegs war und mein Coauthor Garfy aus den UK kommt. Gibt doch auch viele gute Creator, z.B. Diced, Paintomancy, Tabletop Workshop, usw. :)
