I picked up some new plastic containers yesterday in 2 sizes so I can get some repotting done. 39cm rim diameter and 50cm rim diameter. I'll be using the larger ones to pot up some bare root fruit trees ( please see other video) and also repot some of my root bound figs.

I don't know how to do it, so thanks for the video. Got a few new plastic pots from Homebase yesterday, I plan to drill holes in them today. Only just got my first drill around 2 months ago, much less know how to drill the holes into plastic containers!! Lol!! So yes, we do exist, those of us who don't know how to drill holes in plastic pots!!

Lol glad this helps, just take your time and don’t push too hard as it is possible to crack the plastic if you force the drill, but a new drill will be nice and sharp 👍. Put plenty of holes , you can’t have too many, but you can definitely have too few 😁

@@lyonheart84 Thank you. I am a little nervous about it! Going to have my tea and watch yours and another RU-vidr's videos again. Definitely don't want to crack them!!

Thanks for the good instructions on the drill bit and YES there are actually people who have no idea how to make holes without cracking the pot. Now I know 😉

Until you’ve done something for the first time no task is simple as far as I’m concerned 😁

PS if you have a very thin pot you can stick tape on it first to make the plastic less likely to crack 😁

Use garden cloth on the bottom of your pots. No loss of soil. No bugs crawl in. Great drainage!

Thank you for the video, Brett! I was actually looking for how *many* holes to drill, so now I know! 😊

Lol I often think the more the better, most fruit trees, even hardy ones hate sitting water or waterlogged soil

Never underestimate the value of good advice, Brett. I used to use flat bits to drill out plastic buckets, but those step bits are far better. I first came across the step bit with regard to reptile care, they are used them for the obvious advantage of leaving no rough burrs around the drilled hole - burrs that prevent water drainingly proper as well. I bet a lot of people are unfamiliar with those bits. Great advice!

Yes you might be right, mind you they aren't always available at normal hardware shops. We use them quite a lot in the old car business of course, very useful for drilling holes in panels for radio aerials or for wiring to pass through 👍

It’s currently 80 degrees Fahrenheit in north Texas. I could use a couple of those pots for my younger fruit trees. Thanks for sharing. Happy Sunday. 👍🏾

the 20lt pots in BM are £4 each and £3 each for the 15lt size

Thanks Andrew, I like the style of these particular Stewart pots so I'm not too concerned about buying the cheapest I can get. Mind you there isn't a BM near to me, probably cost me more in petrol than the saving on the pots 🤣🤣

So I have one with three what look like inverted legs( if you know what I mean) do I droll the holes in them?
@lyonheart84
@lyonheart84 2 месяца назад
You mean like cones that point up inside the pot ( I think that’s to do with the moulding process ). Sometimes I drill through them with a small drill but it’s not necessary, you can drill other holes elsewhere

How did you put holes in the bigger black pots? Removing the spikey things in the pots? Or drill holes?
@Zim121rules
@Zim121rules 3 года назад
Sorry how?
@lyonheart84
@lyonheart84 3 года назад
I believe the upwards spikes inside are part of the moulding process. I normally drill small holes through the tips of the spikes ( if the pots have them ) as I figure it might help drainage and getting air into the soil. I drill my main drainage holes into the base of the pot. I put extra holes for anything subtropical or tropical
@erikar3676

My pleasure Jean, it would be a bad error not to put drain holes into one of these, your plants wouldn't last long 😱
@jeanennis1054
@jeanennis1054 Год назад
@@lyonheart84 what do you think is the reason plastic pots and ceramic pot are not required to have them in the first place.
@lyonheart84
@lyonheart84 Год назад
Because a lot of people buy these as decorative containers to put another pot inside. Obviously if you want to put them inside your house ( or conservatory) you certainly don't want water leaking straight out of the outer pot. To be fair different types of plant might require different levels of drainage, hence less or more drainage holes 😁
