Audi Avant etron (A6 variant) is meant to be coming later this year…. And supposedlt has a range of close to 600miles. Think we can expect it to be about 100k though if not more. VW is meant to be doing a similar size to the passat long roof as well.

I've never seen anyone with presbyopia (needs reading glasses) review rear view cameras. Anyone who uses varifocals for example can see in car mirrors because the object they're focusing on is not the mirror glass but with a camera and screen their focus is on the screen itself. This can easily cause many problems, especially when combining varifocals with the interior mirror because the reading segment of varifocal glasses is at the bottom of the lens which obviously means it can't help much to see a screen above your head. It at least needs a conversation... no?

Very much so - It seems as though the only human factors people now on cars are the software engineers who have had no formal training in proper HF/Ergonomics - it feels as though designers are running away pony tails flying in the breeze, putting in all the fancy stuff without actually considering the full user base, just the 18-40 year olds - many of whom no longer actually want a car! Removing the rear window and replacing it with a camera and a screen, especially in an electric vehicle, has to be one of the biggest "fixing a problem that doesn't exist" things since they tried to get rid of side mirrors the same way... And for a cars that size, the cargo capacity still vastly underperforms sportswagons and the less pretty Model Y. Yes, Tesla was lazy and could have put 100 kWh in that one to get similar range to Polestar 4 and Porsche Macan EV, but their clients can live with the specs, and get a big cargo space figure, whether that's real or not, practical or not, premium or not. It sells. It'd lke this trick on a proper wagon and get to stuff it without trying to get view out the inside mirror. It's a near trick, but it's more a Lambo wound patch for the bleeding than a Polestar's most valuable differentiators. Is the view better with the cam, until it get dirty? I'm sure it is.

max’s explanation reminds me a bit of my time at my art academy where I gobbled up intellectual design speak to validate something which was either accidental or more archaic than I was willing to admit. And I dont necessarily like the move towards the windowless bullet where you are solely dependent of technology rather than analogue and physical interactions with the car and its environment. I do appreciate the wish to differentiate, as it can lead to awesome design solutions but in interacting with traffic, the main responsibility in a car, this windowless back lid doesn’t add anything as single solution. Loved your cheeky style of subtle noncompliance ;-)

I appreciate the fresh and minimal design, but all I see is how expensive repairs would be for this thing. So many LED's inside the car, all of those cameras which will surely fail at some point - and given these electronic dependent cars I wouldn't be surprised if the car won't allow you to drive it with a broken camera for 'safety' purposes. I see more excessive luxury than I see practicality - which I find is at odds with a minimalist design.

So as soon as the camera breaks you can't see anything behind you and ten years from now you won't be able to get replacements, which means the car will be basically scrap. Heck, even if the camera gets dirty you're going to struggle. Also, how well does it handle glare from the sun? Pretty disappointed by this- BRILLIANT video again from Jonny! I'm beginning to see why people are turning away from BEV. The tech isn't advancing quickly enough, charge times, battery range etc hasn't improved much in the last 5 years. In the meantime prices are going up, charging costs are going up and manufacturers seem obsessed with selling us cars we don't want or need. Who wants an SUV/coupe?! It looks MASSIVE and yet the boot is useless, my measure for a practical boot is a Volvo 240- can you fit a washing machine sized box in the boot? Nope, then its not a family vehicle. Everything about it looks enormous and yet the place where EVs make any sense at all is in 'urban areas' and yet, thats the very same place where space on the road is at a premium. I really wish a manufacturer would think about how cars are used in the real world, what the real world looks like and make something thats fit for that purpose, rather than trying to create a futurist, blade runner esq aesthetic that is neither practical nor appealing.

Sorry Jonny, after 10 mins I drifted off and started gazing out the window. There is something inherently dull about Ev's no matter how you spin it. I'm no EV hater, I have one, an MG ZS and I'm perfectly happy with it. Interesting it is not. Listening to a designer talking about certain little design features is really tedious. Great video. Current Polestar2 LRDM owner here, and this is square in my sights as a next car. Overall, I think I'd like it - but I do have some reservations about a camera instead of a mirror, given how bad the rear view camera on the PS2 is once there's a mist of dirty road water and tree sap misted on the lens. Also you can keep the autonomous driving, I'd be un-checking that option! Oh and the labelling of all the parts with their eco-credentials looks ridiculous too ... stop that please Polestar, makes me look really self-righteous as the owner.

To be fair though, the rear camera on the P2 is for reversing only and not a "rear view" camera as such, plus, it is situated just above the registration plate, so is bound to get mucky. The HD rear view camera on the 4 is roof mounted and has an overhung cover, I would expect they have run multiple tests this position in all weather types to ensure it remains clean and clear and meets all regulations. I am also a Polestar 2 driver , Launch Edition DM PP and looking as the Polestar 4 DM as my next car, no question.

I test drove a polestar 2, and was really impressed. (Being such an anti-EV petrol head) The problem for me was it was too small, especially with the massive centre console. I currently drive an e39 touring, and have fallen in love with estates because of it. If Polestar built a proper estate in a v60/v90 size (comparable to my 5 series), they’d be onto a real winner. - and I’d be willing to make the change to EV. To everyone wants an “suv”. it’s hard to trust sales figures when estates aren’t offered any more, skews the results a little bit! (Build them, and they will come…) #BringEstatesBack

I didn't know they made so few Polestar 1's, we'd always see several in the parking garage of the building.

I’m all for EVs, I’ve owned three so far, but why why why are these manufacturers not building SMALL EVs. Not 2m wide, 5m long behemoths that can do 0-100 in sub 4 seconds and cost 70,000 pound/euro/dollar. We need them to build 50kWh sub 25,000 euro/pound/dollar cars. No over the top design, no panoramic roof, touch screens, electric everything, vegan leather. Simple cars for simple people (like me). A modern Fiat Uno, or a Volvo 340, or a Toyota Starlet. We want SMALL cars!

4.84 metres in length, 2.14 in width, that is a MASSIVE car. I know that's not what Polestar is about, so it's a bit off topic, but I wish someone would make something small that still is a good all-rounder EV. There was an early batch with the Renault Zoe and the Pegeout e208, but it seems that all the interest has died down on that kind of car and no evolution of the concept of something-more-than-just-a-city-car is coming up. I'm looking for a car like that myself but the only option in the market right now if it's your only car is the ID.3/Cupra Born.
@theidealcopy_
@theidealcopy_ 6 месяцев назад
City car sized EVs just aren’t profitable enough for most manufacturers to bother. Time was a small car meant less options & less equipment but those days are long over and thus small cars become less and less profitable as people demand the same kit as they’d get in the next model up but for markedly less money. With EVs costing a premium already, most people would look at the price of a genuinely small EV and turn their nose up, understandably. Honda E was getting on for £40k new and you could get a whole lot more car for either the same money if you went ICE or maybe 10-20% more if you stuck with EV. Not that anyone actually buys a brand new car anyway, but that’s the reason, ultimately.

I've driven my Polestar 2 now for 3 years and can honestly say, I have very rarely turned my head to look out the rear window when reversing. The reason? Superb reversing camera giving a 360 Degree all round the car view, collision sensors that work faultlessly and warn in an ultra wide angle, where the human eye cannot. It is just a matter of getting used to trusting the technology. If you are unable to do that, then perhaps you are not ready for the future just yet.
