NEW Porsche 911 Targa 4S (992): Road Review | Carfection 4K 

I own a 2021 Targa and trust me - there is no horrible wind noise - even with the windows up. Sometimes you get some wind coming from behind- but pop one window down an inch and that goes away. I am 6’2” and the top of my head is below the wind coming over the top of the windshield unlike my Corvette c7 Grand sport that numbs the top of my head from the wind buffeting. Also I rarely pop the wind diverter on the top of the windshield as it causes too much noise and does not reduce the wind issues. The weight? Add one passenger and that is more than the weight difference. Silly to worry about a small amount of additional weight in a car that is designed for going to lunch with a gal rather than running on a track. Cabriolet is ugly with the top up - and won’t keep your dog safe in the back seat with the cabriolet top down like the Targa back curved windshield. Unlike this fellow that had the Targa for a day I own my car and in less than three months I have driven 6,000 miles in my Targa. This 2021 Targa is the best vehicle I have ever owned almost a religious experience on long desert freeways with the top down and on cold days the heated steering wheel and heated seats and air system pumping warm air at your feet. And in hot conditions/ the a/c pumps out massive cold air and the cooled seats washes your back in cold air as well. A fabulous car- finest and most fun car I have ever owned- and over 70 years I have owned plenty of fancy cars. Also if your a big guy-tall and or pudgy - this 911 is the one of the most comfortable cars I have driven over long or short distances. It hunkers down on long freeway rides and you never want to stop driving.

For me, there are 2 main considerations when choosing a convertible: the car must look good with the roof up or down, and the wind noise must not be acceptable. Most reviews don't mention the wind noise, so I appreciate Henry starting his review with it.

I've always had a soft spot for the Targa, for me it's the best looking 911. And usually putting the windows down as well as the roof does get rid of that buffeting noise.

The Targa model is my favourite 911 of the lot.

When you buy a 911 you want something very special and novel! Which the 911 with it's special heritage and layout already is. The Targa is that turned up to 11 - that's why we all love it and don't care if it's heavy or if it's not as good as the cabriolet. We all simply love it! Spotting a Targa is like spotting a GT3 - it is that special and I can't wait to get my hands one it 🤩

The arm around the the lamp post analogy was simply brilliant! Anyone who’s ever driven a car with handling that good will no doubt be smiling too! Also love the genuine and cheeky grins into camera. Targa is much better than Cabriolet. This car looks amazing!

I enjoyed this review! I found it honest, informative, and a must-see if you're thinking about getting a Targa. After much research on 911s, I had my mind made up on a 911 Carrera 4S. After months of waiting for a new one to come to my dealership (they didn't know when they were getting a build allocation from Porsche) and being told I could be waiting over a year, I was told they had a build configuration on a new Targa 4 GTS that could be delivered mid-January '23. After test driving a '19 Targa GTS, I was sold!! I loved its looks, the way it handled, it was plenty fast enough for me (473 HP; 420 lb/ft Torque), and the amazing engineering of that top opening and closing! I was tempted to watch it do its thing over and over! I configured a 2023 911 Targa 4 GTS in Agate Grey Metallic. It's scheduled for a mid-January '23 delivery date! It's been my dream car since high school! I'm a very lucky man!!

I have a Porsche since 2 years, but I cant even imagine myself sitting in this car! What will I even be doing sitting "inside" this car? Its so beautiful that I just want to look at it all day. Its for my eyes not some lucky passerby's. This car is so beautiful that I just need a perfect model of this on my desk.

I was in one of these 2 days ago in an amazing red. I haven't been in a 911 since a 1997 turbo, the bad boys 911. And in my opinion it still has the 911 vibe. I knew looking for this that Henry would have a video on it. Thanks Henry, always a brilliant reviewer.

This is the first video I have seen on the 911 targa that mentions the buffeting issue. However for me there is simply no contest if I was to buy a 911 today be it a 992 or 991 it would have to be the Targa it just looks so freaking cool!

There's no better escape than ten minutes with Carfection

Henry, you are so right. I had something of a Cabriolet/Targa debate but eventually decided on the Cab for just the reasons you give. Targa does look so lovely though eh?!

I would argue that in this generation 911, the Targa is much more beautiful than the normal cabriolet. It is not on par with the Coupé, but it gets rid of the hunch formed by the engine compartment lid, which is very prominent in the fully open top version, diminishing the clean and elegant lines. The Targa roofline takes the accentuation away from the hunch and moves it to the rollbar, which works its absolute finest in the context of this generation. That would be my reason for going for the Targa (although the Coupé wins the overall decision).

The Targa top is also much more secure than the convertible. You can lock it up!

The buffeting is a complete deal breaker for me. Would drive me insane.

Porsche has to do something about that “hey that guy left his trunk open” rear spoiler....

As a 1967 Targa owner, I would love to get my hands on this car in the future when it becomes affordable.

Car especially at this level are an emotional purchase, and the Targa looks lovely, so buy one.

The Targa is the one tust I'd daily, convenience of just having the top removed whilst keeping that gorgeous rear glass bubble.

the thing I really like about the Targa (not that it's the 911 I lust after) is that when the rear screen is moved away from the body the 911 closely resembles a Carrera GT, until the window is put back again.

Well, today I own a GT3 Touring because of your EVO 911R interview with Andreas Preuninger 4 years ago. A car, I must admit, my wife will have to pry from my own lifeless body someday. Therefore, to quote one of your quotes, "I went full crank" and to me, at the very least, you've become part of the 911 heritage. Warm greetings from West Coast Canada!

This wasn't the latest or longest review I've seen of the Targa, but it was easily one of the most informative. The roof mechanism kinda irks me though. I wish they could have kept it simple like the original Targa, and made a lightweight and manually removable roof.

I have a 1984 white on black Targa...an old twin of this car in the review..and it's magic. I'd probably buy this if I were looking for new. Great and honest vid. Thx.

The Targa 992 is the most beautifull 911 ever made. In my 997 c4 cabrio that deflecting screen came up automaticly

I agree 100% with Henry. You want open top, get the cab. The Targa top weighs more, in the wrong place. It also forces you into mandatory AWD. You can’t open the top on the move like you can the cab. You get no benefit in stiffness unlike the old Targa, because the roll hoop is just a decorative part of the heavy roof. You also don’t get nearly as much air in the cabin as you do in the cab. Looks better though. There is that.

That wind noise sounded great going through my subwoofer! Thanks :D Such a shame they dont do a 2/2S version. It would save some weight and after owning a 992 2S for 6 months I can safely say I've never felt I needed more grip, even in the wet. There's one final downside missed out of the video. The price!

There’s the quintessential ‘but’ with Henry before/after every compliment. ‘I like it but because apples are 5 bucks a llb I’ll refrain from accepting.’ There’s no doubt Henry picks the nuances. That’s good, BUT, I wonder whether many are worthy of emphasis. Henry’s opinion that the Cab is better because...... I’ll contend the Targa is better for looks, it’s operation particularly as Henry emphasised that point at the start! I’ll also give you another opinion: we all have a CHOICE. And that’s the most positive option that Porsche offers. Thank you Henry, I enjoyed your review very much.... then again I feel the Targa is a winner.

Straight in there and the reason I have a Cab, nice to have the science behind the buffeting explained too. Targa looks fab but isn’t so great to live with roof down. Agree re the touch screen too.

The 911 Targa is by far the best-looking 911 (except for the GTx variants with the big wings maybe), and style is everything. If/when I can afford a 911, you bet your ass I'm getting a Targa.

If it was a c2 targa with a manual box, I'd take it over any other 911 in the range. I'm never going to be able to push the limits of a gt2rs because I'm not a racing driver. So may as well have something with about enough performance that I find far more pleasing to the eye. 🙌🏻

Fully agree : I dislike the touchscreen. I do prefer the "one button - one function" philosophy of Porsche. I do understand nowadays you have so many options to choose from that separate buttons would make it more of an airplane cockpit, but the layout in de 991 was far more better... As for the rest : great video as usual !

Eventhough targa looks iconic, cabriolet can be purchased with RWD which will be almost 100 kg lighter and will be more peaceful when it is driven opentop.

I want a convertible but I hate that canvas roof. So this targa version is perfect with the glass back window.

Even in Legos, I prefer when bricks are printed, not stickers. Gives them premium feel. :) The same with Porsches. XD

With the new Cabriolet, was a Targa really necessary? I always preferred coupes but the new Cabriolet is awesome and with the wind deflector up, you don't have any wind or wind noise in the cabin.

I think a lot if people, like myself, like the Targa because you don't lose the coupe lines, although the 992 cabriolet is much better these days.

Ah, a delightful, and much welcomed, focus and inclusion of the Helmholtz effect! I concur-full crack with the cabriolet! The heritage and relative rarity of the targa does remain a bit of a siren song though.

Great video as usual Henry. I remember the old days when the Dutch Highway police drove 911 Targas. Why anyone would own one now instead of the Cab is beyond me. Having seen that I've seen a number on the roads here in Canada. Sentimental people I guess.

I've never owned a Porsche in my life but lately i've been checking out videos of the Targa... something about that "hoop" thingy is really striking. The only that puts me off is those naff looking touch screens, I far prefer old-fashioned analogue dials and buttons. Is it just me ? Poking at an oversized ipad while I try to keep one eye on the road is a stressful experience at the best of times... and don't get me started on the greasy fingerprints.

Targa sells well? It’s odd, at least where I live, I could probably count 50 Cabs and Coupes before spying a Targa. But I have to admit, I quite love the look of Targas, the 991 has a lovable 80s vibe about it.
