Hi everyone, Cam here. Was a real pleasure to drive the Cayman GT4 and Boxster GTS 4.0 back-to-back. If you had £76,000 lying around, what would you get? A bog-standard Cayman GT4 or a highly-specced GTS 4.0? Let me know! One thing I had to cut for time: while they're very similar to drive, there's something special about the GT4. I found myself looking back when I walked away from it, which I didn't do for the GTS 4.0. Whether it's worth spending £11,000 more to feel special is another story. (PS: the GT4 weighs 1420kg but it sounds like I say '4020kg'. No, it doesn't weigh over four tonnes!)

Never thought I'd use "practical" and Porsche in the same sentence, but I chose the Boxster GTS 4.0 because it is a great daily driver even with the manual, and allows me to hunker down into race mode (not really, I live in Southern California) when I want to. Plus, out here in Los Angeles it's nearly impossible to get an allocation for any GTS 4.0 let alone a GT4 or Spyder. And even if I did win the lotto with a Spyder, I couldn't live with that top as it can get over 100 degrees here and need easier up and down functionality. I will say the GT4 doesn't do anything for me more than the Cayman GTS, but the lines on the Spyder top down are one of the finest on any sports car today.

What a day at the office! It would be interesting to see how you compare the Cayman to the M2 (a vehicle that looks like it never missed leg-day)

I covered 700 miles in 3 days! Pretty much lived in it! Agree, would love to have it alongside the M2 and we'll see if we can make that happen. I've driven M2 CS and it's very close, but admittedly had much more seat time in the GT4... - Cam

In terms of looks, areo and suspension, yes, the GT4 is better. But I don’t think it’s worth spending the extra money (and the wait time) to get a GT4. I want the flexibility to adapt the suspension for my driving habits (I don’t want a racecar all the time). And, since I’m going for a convertible, the manual roof on the Spyder is just a pain in my opinion (and ridiculous for that amount of money). But the Spyder does look great with the roof down though... GTS 4.0 is my winner!

Good job! Just a note, if I may... It's not Boxster Spyder: it's just 718 Spyder! Cheers from Italy!

I enjoyed your review (music gets a little old). In my opinion, for enjoyment and resale purposes, the carbon buckets and sport chrono are a must. I have the 981 variant. For sheer driving pleasure it has been worth every penny.

Just ordered a GTS I don’t want a racecar and it’s just too fidgety the GT4 The GTS is just a more subtle GT4 for everyday Brilliant

Why not a used 911? I dont understand people who buy cars new. For the price of a new cayman gts you get a cery nice 991.

@@Question.Authority I bought a new GTS 18 months ago and the cheapest second hand GTS on UK autotrader is similar to what I paid new and there aren’t many on sale. For me buying a car like this new means I know for sure a baseball cap wearing 20 year old hasn’t thrashed the life out of it and the financial penalty is nothing like that I took on my previous M2 for instance.

why even compare … the GT4 is not meant to be a daily driver … the Macan does that

Yes, worth the premium for the looks, suspension, and being more special as a Porsche GT car. Keep in mind...the GT4 will hold better value, so you will make some (if not all) of that difference in depreciation savings over the GTS.
@MrRandomTwat

Based on what? GT4 is not limited in numbers and shares the exact same engine, gearbox and exhaust as GTS 4.0. They'll keep the delta, but I doubt there will be much difference in depreciation between them. The GT4 only makes sense if you track regularly, GTS is a much more livable package with the exact same performance. Even on track the difference will be basically from driver only.

@@MrRandomTwat I think the GTS 4.0 will certainly hold its value quite well but you can’t deny the GT3 suspension parts on the GT4 and that much better looking bumper are quite nice.

Like the idea of the GT4 over my GTS but if, like me, you will predominantly drive it on the road (I’m up to 9k miles now on the road) there are a few little conveniences not available on the GT4. Prime example is the multifunction steering wheel which I use all the time. Overall really love my manual GTS and find it hard to believe it would be a huge amount more. I have driven a GTS on track and have another Oulton Park day in a few weeks and will be interesting to see how it feels on a fast track.

it is a race car for the race circuit,why complain about tall 2nd gear,?
@YesAutoUK
@YesAutoUK 3 года назад
It's a road car, not a homologation special for racing. Tall second gear has been done for emission regs, but it's simply too long and (only just) compromises a near-perfect driving experience. It's the same situation on the GTS 4.0, which is very much a road car. - Cam

@YesAutoUK

But then you don't get the flat-six. And that's a HUGE part of the GT4 + GTS 4.0
