Coincidentally I ordered a PM-1030V just earlier this week. The bench stand was on backorder so I elected to by locally a ICON 73" Tool Chest to place the lathe on after it arrives next week. The tool chest will give me tons of drawers for both lathe and mill tooling, plus extra room on the side of the lathe for misc things. I enjoyed your unboxing video and look forward to the delivery of my first lathe as you demonstrated. Quinn of Blonde Hacks fame is also one of my favorite Machinist RU-vid creators.

I've been hearing good things about the icon brand. A coworker of mine has a couple of their c clamps. And they're pretty darn sturdy for half the price of the vice grip brand c clamps. I do intend on eventually getting a meal someday. I think I'll look into this tool chest.

Do another vid in a year. These noobie, lookie what I just got, vids are cute but they are not very informative as excitement is the main ingredient. I bought a Grizzly mill and lathe and have never looked back. Love making chips without dips. The first thing you have to do with all these overseas machines is disassemble and clean them. Then go through all the adjustments. I made a table for my lathe with adjustable feet, the mill came with a stand that I anchored to the concrete because it is not very sturdy otherwise. The first thing I did on my lathe was to get rid of the round 2 bolt cross slide adjustment ring. I made a 4 bolt out of 5/8 plate. The parting/cutoff tool works a lot better on 2 inch round of the tool holder is solid. That cross slide feed is a nice feature that mine does not have, that might be a project in the future to upgrade mine. Forge On!!!

If you can't trust the concentricity of the dead centre in your headstock, chuck up an offcut and machine a 60 degree point on it. So long as you don't remove it from the chuck (or remove the chuck from the spindle), it is guaranteed to be 100 percent concentric with the lathe spindle.

I recommend getting yourself a label maker, and putting some labels on the controls, to remind you which way the controls go, for longitudinal feed, cross feed, etc., to avoid selecting the wrong position and ruining the workpiece, or worse crashing the tool into the chuck.

On the various other machine channels I watch. I've noticed people doing this as well.
@BedsitBob
@BedsitBob 7 месяцев назад
@@steelforestweldingandforge Once you get used to the lathe you won't need the labels, but in the early days it's easy to screw up and engage the wrong setting.

Hope you're enjoying your new machine. The old british lathe I recently acquired had a "run in" procedure in the operators manual. Do these new machines need to be run in ?
@steelforestweldingandforge
@steelforestweldingandforge 6 месяцев назад
Thank you! And congrats to you as well. The manual does not mention anything thing called a run-in procedure. Does this process consist of aligning the tailstock possibly? If that's what you're referring to then yes, there is a detailed process for this that I have yet to complete.
@lindsaybrown7357
@lindsaybrown7357 6 месяцев назад
@steelforestweldingandforge No, it's more about managing the gears and bearings before putting them under load for the first time. Involves running each speed and feed for a specified time, then draIning and replacing the lubricant. Bit like the old practice of running in a new car. I guess with modern manufacturing techniques, it isn't a requirement nowadays.

just bought same lathe & waiting for it to ship. Question, does the boom on your hoist not extend any further?
@steelforestweldingandforge
@steelforestweldingandforge 5 месяцев назад
Unfortunately no. It was extended out as far as I could put it. The legs on the hoists are absolutely enormous. I have a separate video reviewing the hoist as well.
@wrangler065
@wrangler065 2 месяца назад
wondering why once you got the lathe close to bench you didnt slide the leggs back so you didnt have to push on it because leggs hit the wall..I've done it a couple times with my cherry picker moving engines around to get on bench against wall..for good measure i put a 4 45lb weight plates thru a chain hanging from from piviot point on crane arm..probly dont need em for balance but i feel better doing it..
@steelforestweldingandforge
@steelforestweldingandforge 2 месяца назад
On this particular unit, the legs fold up. They don't slide back unfortunately.

With it that close to the back wall, is there room to swing open the headstock gear train cover?

Also, just leaving room for his hand at the tailstock, means he won't be able to remove the tailstock if he ever needed too. He's still new & shiny so he'll learn as he goes!

A 98 level isn't generally used for machine tool setup. Level really doesn't matter here, what you are looking for is bed twist. A precision level with accuracy to .0005"/10" or better is what is generally used for machine tool installs. These bench top lathes are generally very stiff due to their size. I have an 1127 sitting on a roller tool chest lagged to the wall and the machine cuts straight. Never bothered to level it. Just checked for twist. The company I manage sells a lot of different brands and styles of CNC machine tools and we use electronic levels and Starrett 199's also Mitutoyo 960's. Even large CNC slantbeds are not truly level after install, they are installed for the least amount of twist.

Instead of putting the level on 1-2-3 blocks, put the level on the cross slide, and run the carriage along the length of the ways. Also, it doesn't matter if the lathe is a fraction out of level, lengthways. Indeed, for a lathe with flood coolant it's recommended to have the end of the lathe where the coolant drain point, in the sump is, a little lower than the other end, so the coolant runs toward the drain point, rather than away from it, leaving a puddle of coolant in the sump.

Bolting it to the floor? Are you in earthquake country? My lathe cabinet is on casters, so I can move it around easily.
@steelforestweldingandforge
@steelforestweldingandforge 5 месяцев назад
Bolting it to the floor increases rigidity, keeps it from vibrating, and reduces the need to readjust for bed twisting.

Those stands are terrible. Much better off getting a heavy duty workbench, you get better storage then too and they are easier to level.
@steelforestweldingandforge
@steelforestweldingandforge 5 месяцев назад
This was actually a very tough debate I had with myself. Either building a rock solid metal bench myself, or purchasing one. Between time, cost of materials, production time, and visual aesthetics I went with the stand. I have starting noticing some lack if rigidity lately. I may end up doing a video on it.
@Festivejelly
@Festivejelly 5 месяцев назад
I got a stand for my first lathe and it was decent enough but because of how narrow it is it just doesnt work that well. I'm not a welder so I just evened up buying a heavy duty desk 600mm deep and its rock solid, and because it has feet its very easy to level and doesnt need bolting to the garage floor.@@steelforestweldingandforge
