When I saw the kitchen with the stain grade wood and the heavy chamfering on the granite, I thought. That's the kind of kitchen which probably has a mural of the hills of Tuscany behind the stove. It's kind of hard to tell but I think it does! 😂 It will be interesting to see how you change this kitchen. You've showed at least one Pennsylvania farm house kitchen before. I don't think we saw the kitchen on your most recently completed project? I love kitchens.

If you want a decorator or a designer, there are a zillion of them to choose from. If you want someone who knows historic precedent like the back of his hand, you must vett your choice. It's simple, but it's not easy. Rome wasn't built in a day.

I agree completely with your observation [@3:15] how the columns supporting that 2nd floor demilune bay window on the 80's addition "just don't look right"... because they just butt up right against the ceiling instead of supporting a plinth beam, like they're correctly supposed to do (and as seen on the original front portico) Unfortunately, this glaring mistake is repeated all too often by modern builders.The columns themselves are well proportioned & detailed (I'll bet they were recycled from the dismantled porte cochere?) I hope you film how you remedy this architectural gaffe?? (or at least show some before and after pics!?)

This house, as all McMansioned-up by prior owners, would fit right in with what passes for upscale Los Angeles. Are you sure the prior architect-designer of the foamy faux additions wasn't the set designer for Cecil B. DeMille? I'm glad I don't own any stock in Fypon or Foam Millwork, Inc., or the like.

Brett, what’s your take on the painted exterior brick? There were a couple of shots that show it didn’t start out that way. It always bothers me when brick gets painted a solid color. 😮
@BrentHull
@BrentHull Год назад
I usually try to NOT paint brick. This house was originally unpainted but when they added on over the last 30 years, they painted all the brick. It would be my desire to go back unpainted but I'm not sure we can pull it off.

Hi Brent, great video! Will you be creating a “hierarchy of design” for the rear facade? By that I mean, on the front façade the central block of the house received the most emphasis because it was the most important (the entrance) - therefore it received grander materials, proportions, details, etc. The two angled wings, although still important, received slightly less emphasis than the front central block and I’m assuming that the back of the original 1920’s house had the same level of detailing as the two side wings. Now that you are renovating the rear facade will you be designing it with a prominent central block or will the entire rear facade be more subdued to match the two side wings? Also, how are you going to deal with all the floor registers, ceiling pot lights, air return grilles, ceiling speaker covers, etc, that come with modern houses? As they are right now, they are certainly on display.
@BrentHull
@BrentHull Год назад
All great questions. We are working on plans and details now. More to come. The quick answer is yes to your questions.
@WBond-fr4ys
@WBond-fr4ys Год назад
Brent, in some of your designs (e.g. ranch, PA farm house, etc.) you purposefully have "additions" with some design elements from a later period. Of course, they're all of good design, and well incorporated. I'm wondering how you wrestle with and or reconcile those same principles (albeit fixing the bad and cheap elements from the last 50 yrs) with the desire to simply restore to original. The examples above tend to be earthier (or lower, or less formal) designs with additions (e.g. farmhouse, not high federal townhouse). Is it possible to have a grand formal home in one style and an addition in another later style without seeming odd? It might seem at least more difficult? thanks
@BrentHull
@BrentHull Год назад
Well it is always a nuanced challenge. Execution of these changes are key. However, historical precedent of changes in different periods offers good clues for how to do this. On very high-style things, you can't drop to far from the original or it looks like an inappropriate shed. You typically need to keep it upscale. My 2 cents.

A big reason why classical has largely fallen out-of-style is because almost no one knows the rules anymore. When it's done properly, like in the front of the building, it looks timeless. The key is restraint! Fewer good quality things are better than lots of low quality. I partially blame sellers. I was on decorator's supply and I struggled to find a simple plaster cornice. Everything was way too ornate, so I've been reading about running plaster cornices in-situ instead. Maybe you can do a video about that?
@BrentHull
@BrentHull Год назад
I agree. it is a big challenge. I'll work on it. Thanks.
@SpanishEclectic
@SpanishEclectic Год назад
You said, "Foam!" three times, and I had to laugh. Yes, it's pretty awful. Making things 'ornate' translates to high class with many folk who don't understand the things you point out. I've seen actual Rococo interiors in Europe, and they don't belong in a house like that, especially not cheap imitations. Balance, clean lines, and tasteful, restrained ornamentation are the way to go. I would also choose a wood floor any day over marble when it comes to living spaces. I appreciate your enthusiasm!
@BrentHull

Thanks for watching.

So much money spent on such tacky details! The architect who put those columns under that bump out like table legs should be booted out of the industry. The sad thing is if you need something like a kitchen re-done you can spend a lot of money with an expensive kitchen design company and still get whatever the trend of the day is pushing--cherry cabinets, granite countertops, metallic tile inserts, words on the wall telling you to eat--there's too much celebration of faddishness going into redesign and too little actual knowledge of how a space should be.
