I have raised 2 doxie puppies now. Its a LOT of work. Doxies hate the rain to go potty. They dont like extreme heat as they are low to the ground. But they are like glue once they bond to you. Be prepared for a lot of stubbornness. Good luck!!! ❤

Our new puppy will be joining us in about six weeks. We are already preparing the apartment for her and have an amazing backyard for her to enjoy. My question is regarding sleeping. We are planning on crate training for naps and sleeping in our bedroom. The more I research, it seems that I should have her sleeping in another room. What is the best solution?

Some puppies do better when the crate is close to the humans at night. Others do just fine if it's in another room. Either option is fine. If you're concerned that sleeping near you will create a dependence, this is not how dependence is formed. As part of crate training you can build in time when you leave the house, which helps her build independence. Just take the training slow, at a pace that is positive for her! Hi Michele, Have been enjoying your videos very much, particularly like the density of information you give so I have been able to learn a lot in a short time. Have one question, I have an 8 week old Miniature Pinscher puppy coming from Queensland to Perth in a plastic crate starting at trip at 7am in crate and is being collected from airport at 12pm by a professional dog transporter who will look after puppy overnight and set off to the south coast next day (4 hours). As puppy has spent many hours in the crate my concerned it will have already set up some degree of crate aversion. I have a brand new plastic crate and wire mesh crate with cover plus Snuggle Puppy …would I be better off trying him with the wire crate first rather than the plastic one. I have a preference for using a plastic crate but bought the wire one in case he showed an initial aversion to plastic crate. I am particularly affected by disrupted sleep so have been following all your tips on crate training to get into best sleep routine for new puppy as quickly as possible.

Thank you so much for your support! We do prefer a plastic crate, we find it helps the dogs settle better in most cases. It's hard to know how your pup will do in the crate. He is unlikely to be able to hold his bladder for that long so you may find some aversion to the crate after the journey. You can work on crate desensitization to overcome that. Thank you for prompt reply :) I have another cheap heartbeat puppy (non heated from local store) which together with my heated Snuggle Puppy I have been sleeping with for a few weeks. So hopefully a crate full of beating hearts plus my scent combined with the small blanket with homely smells that the breeder has placed in the travelling crate might make the pup think he is back with his litter mates ;)

When training a basic command like sit, in which order do I say the words? For example as soon as the dog sits down, do I say „Yes“ first followed by „sit“ or do I say „sit“ first, followed by „yes“? Thanks in advance 😊

The "sit" is the cue, so you'll say that first. Then when he does it, you say "yes!" as a way to tell him that he's done a good job. While you're saying "yes", start to fish for the treat to offer to further remind him that he did a good thing.

I live in the country and my puppy plays with my border Collie. They run everywhere and I lose sight of them. My older dog comes and command and is very well trained. How do I teach the puppy the limits of the area? I do have an outdoor kennel but this is when they run and play in the afternoon. She doesn't come when I call her and I get so worried. My older dog will go get her for me but I need to know how to train her to come when I call. Sorry so long. She's 12 weeks old. Goldendoodle.

When we work on recall with dogs (and their owners) we play a series of games that get the dog focused on running to us and avoiding other distractions. If your pup has had a taste of freedom and a taste of not coming when called, you'll have more work to do to undo that behavior. Dogs are drawn to movement so if you want your pup to come towards you don't run after him/her, as that actually pushes them further away. When spatial pressure is applied, an animal's natural instinct is to move away from it. If you've ever called “come” multiple times and attempted to go grab your pup you might have triggered the pup’s natural instinct to move away. In addition, if you only call your pup to you when fun ends or to take something away from them, you have taught your pup that coming to you isn’t a great idea. As with all training, we want to make sure we are motivating our dogs well to do what we ask. This is especially important with recall, as we want them to know that we are always more valuable than the thing they are doing. This takes time and training and a lot of practice in different environments. It won’t happen overnight but it will happen!
