The guy saw two different snakes with this coloring in 25 years, on the same ranch? Yeah, I'd say there's a chance it's hereditary. The chances of seeing the same fluke twice in a lifetime is slim. The chance of seeing it on the same property is astronomical. If it's not hereditary, it's being triggered by something in the environment there.
@stephenfreeman7808
@stephenfreeman7808 5 лет назад
im having trouble imagining how the odds of seeing two in the same area could be lower than the odds of seeing two that are each in different areas
@johnnycampbell3422
@johnnycampbell3422 5 лет назад
Environmental is almost totally different from genetic. Susceptibility to factors may be generic but generally a genetic trait for pigment is just that. I did like your post though.
@biancawoller2162
@biancawoller2162 5 лет назад
@@stephenfreeman7808 It's because there is a much smaller amount of snakes on his property than there are over all. I.e.- It would be less surprising to see two one-in-a -million snakes if he traveled to a bunch of different locations and looked, but since there are presumably much fewer snakes on his ranch, it's a lot less likely that it is as rare on his ranch. It's like the same person winning the big lottery twice.
@stephenfreeman7808
@stephenfreeman7808 5 лет назад
Bianca Woller Its a long story that I can't precisely explain here, but I'll speak generally for the purpose of explaining my reasoning. Forgive me if I'm saying some stuff that you already know... It's been so long since I watched the video, but he, and I, were talking under the assumption that it was a genetic morph. This would almost certainly mean that it's a recessive gene, but even if it were dominant, co/dominant, or incomplete dominance, then what I'm fixing to say is still logical... Somehow, at some point in time, a freak thing happens and a snake is born with a mutated gene. Once that happens, then that snake will pass on that gene to It's offspring. After that, related decendants of that origional snake that breed with each other will make more unusual mutated babies. The way that such genes are passed to offspring isn't a mystery, and the odds of each baby inheriting the gene, and showing the unusual mutation, is also understood... So if two snakes with an unusual genetic mutation (such as the one in this video) are found a great distance from each other, then that would mean that the very rare and mysterious occurrence of a snake being born with a mutated gene that it's parents didn't carry, would have to have occoured twice, and indepentent from each other. It would be rare for this to happen, even more rare for such snakes to both be found, and even much more unlikley than that for the same person to find two such unrelated snakes... However, if two such snakes are found near each other, then it's not near as incredible of an occurrence. This is because it's easily explainable in that they would both be descendents of a snake that carried the mutated gene, and so thats how/why they both have the gene themselves... lol, I may have rambled some crazy stuff, but I hope I was able to explain the reasoning behind what I said ☺
@biancawoller2162
@biancawoller2162 5 лет назад
@@stephenfreeman7808 Charles Eye's post specifically talked about how the rarity made it more likely for them to be related, so not mentioning genetics made it look like you were making some bold assumptions about them not being related/ making a bold statistical assumption. Glad we're on the same page!

My guess would be some sort of axanthic, seeing as albino western rattlers are predominantly yellow, which this snake appears to have little to nothing of. So in a sense, pairing this with something that adds more red and washes out the melanin would produce a softer pinkish snake. I'm not that into the idea of keeping hots for myself, but genetics stuff always piques my interest! Wish you luck with them Blue Jeans lmao

Salmon colored rattlesnakes already exist in the SE corner of Arizona and right along the border of SW New Mexico. They're the size of a Pygmy Rattlesnake. They're rare but, they do exist. When we were stationed in NM, I saw them twice basking on rock outcroppings. I saw two the first time and one the other time.

They were very very dialated. The snake was still very new to captivity, and was amped up and ready to defend itself. Body language is important in them, and when those pupils are that big, it is a sign for sure. It is starting to calm a bit though. However, no matter how calm will always be moved with hook/tong.

@samasiaskipperable 6 лет назад
I’ve only seen the introduction so my comment maybe a moot. It seems to me that the possible injury to the snake out weighs the test of gators. One cannot imagine the manufacturing process didn’t include non animal quality testing which would be representative of the bite strike and force of snakes. Therefore the only real test should be comfort and any areas of the gator that might have a soft spot to penetrate, a goal most “snakes” likely have🌝
@OlympusReptiles
@OlympusReptiles 6 лет назад
samasia skipperable there was absolutely no damage to the snake. As a matter of fact I had two others that just didn't want to bite so we don't force it. And lab testing is one thing, but when it comes to something as important as this, I prefer actual proof. Which is why we did this. I wouldn't ask anyone to trust a product I wouldn't trust. Now, I can say I trust these.

Looks like fun, and very pretty snake. Of course this species is widespread and not rare, so there are major differences between various specimens, even from the same area. Nothing majorly extreme here, but very cool that you are breeding it to check to see if it's "genetic"... i have a question, and it seems like this is a place that i could get an answer. I have some photos of a western diamondback that was caught by my mom's brother in the spring of 1979 and released. I was present when the photos were taken. I remember the snake was small. It would have been born the year before. It was a long time ago, and i was five yrs old, but theres one photo of it that ive always stayed familiar with over the years because it was framed and hanging on a wall. The snake is pink and patternless. Maybe lecustic? Besides this once, has the morph I speak of ever been discovered in western diamondbacks to anyone's knowledge? I'm wondering if it has ever been found again, or ever will. I have seen one that looked simular in a captive bred snake, but the guy who bred it said it was a double morph. Thanks
@OlympusReptiles
@OlympusReptiles 5 лет назад
Stephen Freeman there are lecustic rattlesnakes (I know for sure in timber). Not so sure on westerns, but it wouldn't surprise me. I think many morphs are out there, but since they aren't farmed like ball pythons as the market is almost non existent we don't see them. The one in this video is vastly different, and appeayto be consistent with other snakes and the hypomelanistic gene, hence why I think it is hypomelanistic. Seeing it in person makes a huge difference. Same with our blood diamond project. Both of those were also featured by dav Kaufman when he toured our facility

It's not real. Pictures have been doctored, and it looks awesome. The pic I've seen, the diamonds are a brilliant royal blue.

Ursula Smith neither.....that is his color. He actually took to captivity very well, has shed, put on weight, and is healthy as a horse. Just has a very odd color for a Western diamondback

@OlympusReptiles
@OlympusReptiles 5 лет назад
Well, it wasn't a commercial. It was a test. We weren't paid. Had it failed we would have shown that. It also shows two separate snakes biting it, then shows the odd hypomelanistic rattlesnake we acquired. But hey, what do I know? I just filmed it.

Seriously am I the only one that thinks why would you want snakes like this? Python,boa constrictor or even a simple garter snake ya they may bite you but ya won’t die. These things can kill you. No matter how cool they may look I don’t want anything that can kill me that I can’t control.

Interesting , but i think you guys are crazy ! There has to be a safer way to test them ? Perhaps. More scientific ? One. Slip or a lucky strike for the snake above the protesters. And Ryan is getting bit i will. Give the guy a ton of credit for staying calm and Doing the test.
@OlympusReptiles
@OlympusReptiles 5 лет назад
Really, the only thing that could make it unsafe is if he tripped and fell, lol. We used snakes that didn't have the distance to strike that high (except for when he started picking it up, which i stopped in the video and can be heard doing so). The boots have been tested before, and I trusted them to work. I didn't the gaiters for sure (I do now) which is why we used two layers. The idea was it was supposed to appear kind of crazy, like a magician sawing a woman in half. But be totally controlled and safe at the same time

Olympus Reptiles I actually did get the impression you guys knew a little more about the whole thing I did think of him possibly tripping or the container sliding accidently putting him in danger it was a great video I'm a little jumpy over any Rattle Snake as i did a lot of back pack hiking in Pennsylvania and Maryland That always had stories of people spotting them on the trails and stateliness them ? Plus i had a Pygmy Rattlesnake in Florida bite one of my dogs on the snout a 75 lb Boxer who we did get to a animal hospital with the captured Snake for identification and had Venom One in Miami send up the correct anti venom luckily the dog pulled thru in 24 hours At a cost of only several thousands of dollars we fed the dog a few Benadryls immediately and the Vet told us she was pretty positive that helped quite a bit ? It wasn't the Snakes fault the dog saw the snake moving and wanted a closer look we saw it happen and the locals confirmed there was a Pygmy in the area they knew of they had hooks and tongs and we found it to show the Vet

Eric Macnichol there are Western morphs. O own caramel, albino, hypermelanistic, etc. Westerns are a species, the morphs are genetic oddities that can often be Bred to be reproduced. Like albino.
