Been waiting for someone to make a video about this! It's totally worth it to me, but they also sell part number 9494, which fixes the only problem with the old transmission. Of course the magnum has the metal motor mount and more kick-up.. and it comes in black! No doubt worth the money in our inflation times.

I’ve been waiting to buy one and I’m pretty sure I will get this updated version. I think it’s worth the extra not even $100. Also I think everyone should have a rustler. I’ve got some nice higher end cars but the rustler just takes a beating sun, rain, snow etc. it’s fast and fun to drive also and easy to fix and repair. Awsome truck

I love my rustler! It was originally an XL5 but through upgrades its a VXL. I installed the hot racing TE38CH sealed rear diff and upgraded the transmission to a hot racing TE12HX01 aluminum transmission case. Paired those with the traxxas 1951r steel constant velocity drive shafts and this thing rips. Will pull the front end up at any speed like you said MSM. I had the same wheelie bars but last time out I ripped it off in a gnarly crash lol.

The new 272R is nice, but not $70 premium nice. $350 for a VXL 2WD is really expensive, might as well spend a little more and get the VXL 4x4 which already has sealed diffs and metal gears. I wish Traxxas would just include their upgrades for free instead of making us pay top dollar for them. They need to make an Ultimate version for the Bandit/Rustler/Stampede, kind of like how Arrma makes EXB versions.

Traxxas had the magnum 272 “pro” back in the early 90s. Had a metal motor plate and metal guard. Was on a lot of their race kits. Can use the current vxl gears inside them too. Look up vehicles like the Traxxas SRT. It came stock with what the rustler slowly gained over 2 decades. Cool video however and the new rustler is a nice kit.

Nice Glamour shots! I went from 0 Traxxas to 2 but both are crawlers. I have the Fire team & a Armma short course truck & Im thinking about getting a 4 wheel drive Traxxas slash or basher something low to the ground that halls ass & doesn’t flip over. Mostly for off-road use with some medium jumps. Any suggestions?

Also my VXL came stock with the Magnum 272 according to the Traxxas website just not the Magnum 272R could that real be the difference. I didnt think the 272R model was that much different other than the metal components? thanks

One of my co-workers gave me an old nitro rustler and im working on swapping it to electric because I don't have any any experience with nitro. I've never done this before, but I'm excited to see how this goes.

i dunno, the roll pin on the input shaft is super easy to replace with a bit of hex key and it will never break again. if sealed diff is what you want, theres after market options way cheaper than replacing your existing transmission. for me, the best part of this new rustler is the chassis. should make power slides over rough terrain a bit easier without the step in the middle of its belly to catch on stuff.

I’m thinking about buying this new rustler so my friend can drive my bandit. Does the new transmission make it faster or is it just going to be more reliable? I haven’t had a problem with the plastic gears in the bandit yet and I drive it pretty hard just wondering.

One more thing different, they replaced the Planetary style diff with a revo type bevel gear diff. It's also possible the new diff might actually fit the old gearbox, also the motorplate is metal (Aluminum) over the stock original plastic

I remember having the older vxl brushless & my gosh I stripped the gear at least 3 times within 3 months. Ended up selling it broken & someone threw in a heavy duty piece so it wouldn't happen anymore. I'm for sure picking up the newer one this week even though I just bought a MAXX V2 about one week ago LOL. I have an addiction as you can tell XD.

I got my rustler vxl 3 months ago and it had everything updated like that one besides that transmission and I’m broke the chassis in half on first day and wasn’t even being hard on it he careful guys I put the old chassis on it

I think another huge perk I've noticed with the 272r is the breaking. The car seems to not break traction and slide as easy with the sealed diff. With the old diff it was often difficult in my opinion to slow the car down without spinning out.

Must be due to the weight of the fluid inside, it helps both wheel receive similar amounts of breaking from the motor. The unsealed diff without any weighted fluid would probably send it to the wheel with least resistant (Both would as they are open diffs, but the sealed is less likely to due to the fluids weight). So yeah chances are that's why

The tires wear so much cause they’re meant for dirt or sand and running them on asphalt or maybe even gravel will wear it fast. My dad’s Bandit had the same problem

What was the input shaft pin doing? Breaking? I haven't broken one yet but just running on dirt mixed with grass. 2s also. 3s was stupid fast LOL. Just ran a couple 3s packs and went back to 2s

@@NitroStarGT Yep, breaks a lot. I broke 3 of them within 3 months so I ended up selling mine to save me a headache LOL. If you're running on mainly 2S the car won't give any problems because it's not as much power as to when the car runs 3S.

I ended up cutting a piece of a 1/16 drill bit and using that as the pin when I had my slash 2wd VXL. It never broke again after that and I beat the crap out of it.

Honestly I don't think you need a new transmission I ran the old 272 on 6s no slipper clutch and rear xo1 tires and was fine so unless you want the sealed diff it's not a necessity

Try using different springs. If my memory is correct, the 1/10th scale springs from losi will also fit traxxas ultra shocks.

i modified my transmission where that little pin would never snap like NEVER! what I did is I took a drillbit and I just cut it and it basically worked

The only differences in the two transmission are the input shaft (9494)and the differential has bigger bearings. And parts are interchangeable except the diffs.

Another difference is also the idler gear. The new idler gear uses the full width of the gear for the teeth compared to the older one which had some extra space on each side of the teeth.

Always great content Mark! I agree with you on the 3s and the amount of torque sent through the transmission. I now run an aluminum Integy gear case with Robinsion racing gears and I like to run the plastic drive shafts and create the break point there rather than the transmission gears. It is great to see the new transmission upgraded and I will give the new Rustler VXL a go!

So it's a good thing I keep my older slash cause it's spec ready so that's a good thing also would love to see you get some bandits on the channel I think your more of a truck guy but not bad I love the rustlers just as much I miss mine.
