New Renault 5 GT Turbo returns for 2024 // Alpine A290 First Look Review. Jonny Smith heads to a secret location in Paris to spend a short time looking over the important Alpine A290 electric hot hatch. This is Alpine's first hot hatch (since the brand was reborn anyway) and it is their first EV.

Based on the fabulously executed Renault 5 electric, Alpine has fitted a larger (220hp) motor from the Megane and Scenic E-Tech, reworked the entire suspension system, added motorsport inspired body styling and thus possibly created the finest hot hatch of 2024.

Oh this is very tasty, I love it. What I like about Jonny is he tells me what I want to know, I don't care about how big a bottle it will carry or if there are some hard plastics, how does it run, and as to electric how far it goes on a charge. All the things Jonny tells me.

But what are you with a fully electric car if your country has no intention whatsoever to provide any descend infrastruction to charge your car. Hybrid cars are currently the way to go till that issue is fixed. Audi Belgium has sacked half of their workforce today, because they can't sell their electric rubbish due to this reason.

So far, Alpine's sound implementation is by far the best one I've heard. It's nothing like the dumb, gimmicky fake engine noise with fake shifting gears we get with other manufacturers. They've basically just given this car the voice of a Renault. I definitely think this is the way to go.

Credit to Renault for staying true to the original lines and design cues - compare this to VW, who have completely lost their design direction with the Golf GTI which is so far removed from the crisp clean design of the Mark 1

Hope we get this in the states. Reasonably lightweight, practical, EV hot hatchbacks are nonexistent out here and anything that isn’t a 2-3 ton rolling bar of soap would be very welcomed.

The price difference isn;t actually that big. Yes, the regular Renault 5 starts from 25.000. But that is the base base version, regular ones with a big battery are 31-32000 and up? Pulls it a lot closer to the A290.

Agree. I find the 35K€ price tag of the "all options basic version" hard to justify when this iteration is so much better for just a bit more. This is a car I would buy to keep forever & upgrade regularly when EV tech makes progress. To commute in the city 30 kms per day, the cheap 25K€ is good enough.

Isn't it interesting how Renault is able to leap frog other legacy brands so easily in terms of ownership, every day motoring and sheer fun? A great review Jonny. We down-under are waiting patiently for advice that we will receive to A5 let alone the Alpine version; head's up Renault, let us know so I can place a deposit and wait in anticipation for a little more of the French divineness. Full confession - I've owned many Renault and Peugeot cars and would like to again.

They are a bit overdone…the “tape” is too thick and proportions are wrong…I didn’t see it as lamp lens protectors…just four strange lights that looked rather odd. I like the idea but not how they have done it.🫢🫢

After owning 2 R5 GT turbo's back in the 90's if Renault were to pay homage to the R5 GT and put a 1.4 turbo engine in there, I'd buy one in a heart beat.

By far the best review of the A290. Love the R5 but this just intrigues me. Small, light and electric sounds a great combo and this comes from some who drives a 3.0 Turbo. Finally saw it at Le Mans and it definitely looks fun. Managed to get and order in yesterday for the launch edition 🎉

The technical upgrades sound fantastic, but think a RenaultSport 5 somewhere in between, with the mechanicals and wider track but style and simplicity is what it should really be. It's taken away some of the thoughtfulness in the 5 that's so appealing and replaced it with 'sporty' bling. The A110 looks so fantastic because it flows and doesn't have wings and angles all over it after all.

I really like this, its an electric car thats well made, well thought out, has charm and charisma and some good performance. I do wish there were other colours available and some silver alloys but the blue is nice and the physical buttons are a big win. Another great review by Johnny, nothing missed, what we want to know, no stupidity and irrelevant comments or gurning in the thumbnail. Class act. I'd say others should learn from Johnny but you can't beat the OG.

Absolutely. Black alloys suit some cars but not this. I reckon modern cars are quite tall and use black skirts and arches to make it look more squat - the black wheels doesn't make that black line stand out as much. It's a gross design compromise.

But your hobby doesn't need to 'die'. What's wrong with appreciating all types of car? Some EVs are good, some piston cars are good. Some people would benefit from using an EV daily, and it could in fact accelerate the appreciation and market for weekend petrol classics.

@TheLateBrakeShow I can't disagree with you there, I can appreciate they have their place, and if things were different and the outcome was that, we could all choose to drive what we wanted but as we are seeing they are deliberately trying to stop us driving which given the current route may put a nail in our coffins altogether. I have huge respect, and I enjoy all your car barn finds and collection videos they are absolutely awesome. You cater for everyone on here, so keep up the good work. Alot of people respect you as a car journalist which can't be said for the likes of Quentin Wilson who looks to just be willing to see the end of classic cars and instead taking hand outs to push the agenda. I hope I don't cause any offence to yourself but that's just my feeling on the situation and I say that as one of the biggest petrol heads that exists from performance cars to offshore powerboats they are everything I live for why I am so passionate when it may come down to losing engines.

@TheLateBrakeShow I was actually going to contact you at some point too I have a Nissan March Super Turbo with really cool rally, Nissan and Nismo history thats never been on the road but used in group n spec, the car needs full restoration one day in the next year I'm about to move house the cars not at my address its in a garage 4 miles away when I move to a house with a garage, I'm hoping to pull it to pieces and start doing it I was hoping you may be interested when I drag it out in doing some kind of barn find. I only want to feature it when I know I'm definitely starting the car, but that seemed like the best opportunity. Not sure if it's cool enough for a feature but I've got magazines with it on rally stages the Nissan plant up in Sunderland used it for promotion, a famous Japanese racing drivers son imported another one on the same ship which was done to group A spec and I have a video interview with one of the marketing guys at Nissan who picked it up from the docks in 1990. I believe it to be the first Super Turbo into the UK. Just think its story deserves to be told it's very long-winded. I've got my own channels on social media which I'd like to use when I start doing this car this is just my account I have the subscription on for the no adverts 🤣 poor boy industries is my RU-vid and Instagram. There's too many gimmicks. Nothing wrong with gimmicks, but when the cost is passed down to the customer I feel its out of touch. It should be an option to add the glass "mountain topology" thing or the fake fog lights.

Another excellent review Jonny, I liked the Ioniq 5N but this perhaps is my new favourite, not a fan of black cars but the black A290 with the square alloys is what I would take

I would love a manual petrol version with the A110 engine, especially as the GR Corolla won't come to the UK.

I drive an A110 - this is interesting but honestly I really like the normal 5 and actually prefer both the interior and exterior design. Don't really need a quick EV to go alongside a quick ICE.

That square wheel is really nice. The "snow flake" pattern is a bit generic, a reference to wire spokes. In general they did a nice job updating an already really well-designed vehicle with touches that don't make it seem like silly looking kits.

Get rid of the silly thing on the bonnet, lower it a bit more, make the spot lights optional, rear drive would be better, make it go faster, needs more range.

From pulling an old car out of a barn and trying to start it, taking us on a journey of building out a country lane/byway car (and competing) to making beautiful presentations of new cars like the EV. Well.. as a 5-person car of frankly decent size (it beats A110 in size) its about as heavy as a Porsche Cayman. I would say that makes it pretty light. Especially if you then consider its an EV. I'm sure there is room to shave some off so that would be a future spec version perhaps. I hoped for a bit lighter but am not disappointed.

0-26 seconds in this vt was great - I was certain that it would have a 2 litre turbo or 3.6 v6 then you said those dreaded words "electric" - such an opportunity missed

Serious question: I have been seeing a trend of the smaller the battery the slower the charging speed. 50KWh batteries seldom get charging over 100kw. I have been dabbling in EVs since 2013 and apart from slightly thicker cables and different controller these cars could get 125 to 150 kw without much mark up. My thoughts are because of the smaller battery you need to charge more often so you want to reduce that time. Maybe I am missing something though… Our Jeep Appendage (I daren’t call it an Avenger) has the same set up 11KW AC and 100 KW DC.

That's just a limitation of the technology. If you have a bigger battery each cell charges slower, so you can pump up the speed. It's the same reason why you can't charge your phone at 100KW

I absolutely adore this car!! Such a win from Renault/Alpine. PCP is such a waste of money but if anything is going to get me into the showroom doing man maths this is it
