New River Gorge National Park is the newest national park in the US - and we think it’s well worth national park status. It has everything an adventure seeker needs: hiking, rock climbing, white water rafting, zip-lining, horseback riding, kayaking, sightseeing, and more.
We camped at Chestnut Creek Campground, but there are plenty of free, first-come-first-serve campgrounds within the park. For an amazing sunset spot, don’t skip Beauty Mountain! It’s a perfect view of the river and the gorge. For the most perfect sunrise, make the drive down to Grandview - this was the most mesmerizing sunrise we’ve ever seen. There are tons of hiking options, but we opted for the Endless Wall Trail with 180 views of the river, the gorge, and the white water rafters. Finally, we drove Fayette Station Road to get a different perspective from the river looking up at the bridge.
To end our trip, we kayaked on Summerville Lake as an alternative to white water rafting since it wasn’t in our budget this time. But we will 100% be back to this park to white water raft!
