Hello my saxophone friends! I thought it would be really important to make a play test comparison video of the Selmer Supreme Alto VS one of my favorite playing Selmer Mark VI altos that we have in the shop! The last comparison video I was comparing it with other modern altos, but we received a lot of requests to compare the Supreme with the king pin of the vintage Selmers: the Mark VI! I edited the transitions so that you can more closely keep the sound and tone in your head while I switch saxophones! I also tried to use the same mouthpiece setup and airstream on both saxophones as well as play the exact same things on each horn! I really hope you enjoy this comparison video and I would love to know your thoughts and opinions on the tone of each one!
Please comment below with what YOU hear 😆🙏🎷❤️👇
Is there a clear winner?

Volume is louder on the Supreme. Makes it seem to sound better.

The vi as always sounds good it’s a classic , but to me the Supreme has its own thing going for it. I think it’s just a matter of people getting out of the mindset that the vi is the end all be all of saxophones, the supreme is here to set a new standard with refinements from the models that came before.

Someday, SOMEDAY, there will be a horn with a more solid sound than a MK VI. Today is not that day. But the Supreme sounds good.

They both sound good. The VI is more open sounding and the Supreme has a focused middy core sound going on. Interesting thing is that the Supreme sounds different on the scale compared to the ornithology clip. VI sounds the same tonally in both. What's the serial on the VI?

Thank for so much for listening to our comparison video! ❤️🙏🎷 it’s a nice playing later VI around 190xxx the other difference I meant to mention was that the Vi has plastic dome resonators and the Selmer supreme has metal

More character in the VI's sound. But this is one sample vs. one sample (and, of course, one player, one mpc...). I have found, however, that good Mark VI horns have a little extra "something" to their sound that the newer models can't match. There are so many variables, and so many different preferences among players; hopefully we're each lucky enough to find what works best for us.

I’m not a MK6 fanatic, but they are clearly one of the top saxophones ever created both in terms of sound and player comfort. Unfortunately collectors have artificially inflated the price of MK6s to absurd levels. Here, the first alto sounds a bit buzzier with a more complex core sound while the second is a bit louder but slightly less resonant.

I like the Supreme -change the mouthpiece, reed etc. and a whole new range of possibilities are available. But I can say the same of the mark vi. Endless!!!!!

Great comparison, you sound amazing no matter the sax. I own myself a 5 digit Mark Vl, but being honest I like the sound on the Supreme in that clip a little more.

The Supreme is a bit louder but the VI definitely richer when you play. The VI was more in tune on the scale, which makes me think you are just more used to the VI. I like the VI better.

I don't quite get the people that say the Mark VI sounds richer or darker. To me the Supreme has that really thick, rich Reference sound; where as the Mark VI has the livelier, nimbler, more focused sound. At least to my ears that's how it sounds.

The sound of supreme crushes, I think it's a mistake. I like how old Selmer sounds without pressure or tension. I really don't understand why they won't make a copy of the old saxophones, is it that difficult?

I think both horns sound great. I just don't hear enough difference in the horns to want to deal with everything that comes with a vintage horn. Beautiful playing sir!

The VI has a really rich timbre, the supreme sounded a bit thin by comparison... but it also seems to have faster action ?

One of the MK6 joys is the mechanism. When Selmer went from the MK6, they shortened the key springs making the mechanism stiffer. What have they done with the Supreme in thi respect?

The mark vi has a less weighty sound with a wodnerful top end sizzle. The supreme is more full bodied, darker with a subdued top end. If your'e after the classic alto sound (cannonball, sonny stitt,) the mark VI is closer (although a conn or king are even closer). The supreme will get you closer to a Jonny Hodges era sound. It should be noted that over the last 60 years or so Selmer has approached sound from a classical timbre perspective. The horns are getting darker, more rounded and extremely narrow and focused sounds which is not what you want if you playing in a jazz, pop, soul context etc. Thats not to say you can use supreme's in these context its just that it will take more work to get to where you want to go.

Kudos for the quality of the playing. Like others I have to give it to the Mark VI, the Supreme sounds a little bright in comparison. As always, it's all about personal taste.

Imo Mark vi sounds so good because it has that vintage sound we hear on jazz records. Other than that there are lot of great saxes around. They just don't have that unique mark vi sound.

Hi, you are wonderful player! Also, the way you present all videos is great. You share a lot of information with people. So everything is great BUT.... None of the videos, where people try to compare Mouthpieces or Saxophones can be truly objective. Only for one reason, regardless who makes that video, a beginner or Charlie Parker or Stan Getz. It because when you play a Saxophone, one mouthpiece will definitely sound better on one Instrument than the other Or opposite if you try two mouthpieces, one plays better because it matches this Instrument more. If You choose different mouthpiece, you might like the other Instrument better. It happens all the time with players on all levels. The good match not only improves the sound but also affects the intonation a lot. I saw many times people could not play a sax on one mouthpiece and the other was perfectly in tune If you want, I can share with you info about the person who makes the very best Mouthpieces. He will explain you all this very detailed. Anyway, thank you for your love to Music and to the Saxophone!!! Wish you always Best Luck and a Good Musical Mood!!!!
