Orcas belong in the ocean. These orcas don't look happy at all. - ( Edit ) For all the pressed people in the comments who do not know anything about what there saying you can stop replying because your reply will not change my thought on this situation. (This doesn't go for everyone, You know who you are) Along with people comparing captive orcas to your domestic dogs and cats keep in mind orcas have only been captive since 1977 while your normal house or dog cats have had millions of years to adapt. I have also heard many people saying "Omg you cant set them free or they will die" Yes, I am 100% aware of this though these whales should be taken to a sea side rescue to rest and not be forced to perform in chemical filled pools for our own good. I hope I stated my point once and for all - Also thanks for the likes! 😅

The orcas are fine these are second-generation captive-born Cetaceans. how do you assume they don't look happy because their dorsal fin give me a break do more research educate yourself they are 23% orcas in New Zealand that have flopped Dorsal fins and they're healthy. but because you think they are unhappy you want to set them freeare you blind to the ones in a while that I'm dying because they're starting suffering dealing with Sonic testing among other things

@@FeistyFins Literally only 7 of the 20 whales are second-generation. That's less than half. It would be more accurate to refer to the majority as 1st generation. And also, the orcas aren't from New Zealand, they're mostly from Iceland. Again, New Zealand whales should not be compared to Icelandic whales for accurate wild vs. captive information, it's almost like comparing a wild African forest elephant to a captive African bush elephant.

i agree that orcas should not be bred in captivity bc of how much it stunts them. i will say though, the fact that theyre willing to put their tail fins in water that's too shallow for it to develop any sort of propelling force means that at the very least they trust their keepers, because for cetaceans to put their tail somewhere where they can't use it it means they do not feel as if they are in danger at all, as its the most vulnerable position a marine mammal can be in, especially when upside down due to their lack of ability to breathe in that position. so they may not realize that their life is as stunted as it is which is a little fucked up but at the very least there's no animosity towards their keepers

Marine biologist here! The common causes of dorsal fin collapse in captivity are vastly different to causes of the condition in the wild. Due to the confined environment, orcas are restricted in their ability to travel rapidly over vast distances and dive at depth; this results in pattern swimming, logging at the surface and exercising less. These captivity-produced behaviours lead to a lack of water pressure applied to the fin, and the reduction of support causes the fin to fall over. We now know that it can also collapse due to depression or it may happen from a traumatic event in it’s life. You can not tell me that these Orcas are being looked after. Little tanks like this is abuse to the animal! Its like locking a dog in a cage every day letting it in the garden maybe twice a day. This saddens me and my team, we want them to stop bringing animals into captivity and leave them alone in the wild where they belong! I asked a seaworld staff member the dolphins were bread in the aquarium and he said “some are bread here but a lot of orcas and dolphins are brung in from the wild” now please tell me why u think u have the reason to STEAL an animal from its home and pod and slap it in a tiny pool for you “entertainment” ?
@itsikabitch9005
@itsikabitch9005 4 года назад
I agree with you, but the staff member was incorrect on sourcing. Currently all new cetaceans at SeaWorld parks except for belugas are generally captive-bred. SeaWorld no longer breeds or captures Commerson’s dolphins or orcas, and it no longer captures bottlenose dolphins, belugas, Short-finned pilot whales, or Pacific white-sided dolphins. As of right now, there are 16 bottlenose dolphins, 6 belugas, 4 Short-finned pilot whales, 3 orcas, 1 Commerson’s dolphin, and 1 Pacific white-sides dolphin who are wild-sources (6 of the bottlenose dolphins, 4 of the pilot whales, and 1 of the belugas were rescues). The rest are captive-bred.

Shockal unfortunately, it’s not likely they can be rehabilitated to be released into the wild. They tried it with the Orca who played Willie in the Free Willie movies and after months and months in a wild sea pen they tried to release him and he came back, he passed away a short time later. They could be released into a wild sea pen so they have the natural environment but, being able to be released into the wild is simply not possible. Their only hope is to have a comfortable retirement from performances in a wild sea pen for the remainder of their lives, how ever long that might be.

These orcas are not hunting for food anymore. They are performing for foods and getting sunburn. So no performance then no food. Seaworld Orcas are being treated like a human having work schedule so these orcas can entertain audiences with their performance and reward with tiny fish

Sadly their only real options are CPS or running away, and both can result in poverty or more abuse from foster parents.

THANK YOU FOR KEEPING THE WHALES SEA WORLD! Don’t let these morons shut you down! I applaud Sea World for not caving into the stupidity of these unrealistic millennial-tards. These whales live a luxurious and pampered life at Sea World. This small group of whales has given their life to the understanding, education, breeding and preservation of their species. This is a more important cause than just having them swimming in dirty water being attacked by sharks everyday and fighting for their lives for a piece of food. They live in luxury with their family and are engaged in the shows, behind the scenes and through their interaction with humans, which is a religious experience. All animals eventually die and these pampered animals had a much better life in the care of humans than in the wild. No one complains when humans keep cats, dogs or fish in their house because the life of this house pets is WAY better in the care of humans than fighting for rats on the streets, dealing with fleas and disease and dirty environments. In the past, when they released these pampered animals in the wild, they died within a week due to the stress, bacteria, dirty water, bad weather and daily attacks where they fought to the death with other animals in the sea. STOP harassing the trainers and marine biologists for the EXPERT and EXCELLENT care on these beautiful creatures. The whining morons on this page and beyond just can’t see the bigger picture. Their idea of experiencing life is to stare at their cell phone all day. Your not helping the whales out your interfering with the research and understanding of this beautiful species! Lie #1: Samantha Burg, who is the “main past employee” of the film did not work for SeaWorld in over 20 years prior to the film! (while MULTIPLE others apply to that to, I will just focus on her right now). She did not work with Tillikum. She mainly worked with the dolphins. She barely saw any killer whale. She gives a lot of “expertise” without having very limited experience! Her email states she did not know any SeaWorld protocol since 1993! Absolutely no one high enough to be a “decision marker” whale trainer was in the film. Lie #2 states that there is no record of wild killer whales doing harm to humans. Simple research disagrees. There is so much more to state. But in general, the film does not have any actual credible experts on orcas, or even credible employees! The film is simply propaganda to make money. SeaWorld has given the largest private donation EVER of 10 million dollars to orca conservation. With all the money Blackfish got, they did not give any donations in benefit of marine life. SeaWorld actually rescued/rehabilitated 33,00 different animals, and has a 24/7 research rehabilitation facility. Look at everything they did for manatees! You would be amazed. Oh please. Maybe do a little research and read and watch just how wonderful these whales are treated by the trainers. The trainers adore these whales, and the whales love them back. They're very well fed - each one has their own diet - and they're never forced to do anything they don't wanna do. One trainer was quoted as saying "When one of the whales is making it clear that he doesn't wanna do the trick you're trying to train him to do at that moment, you have to respect that and try again later. Because you have to remember that you're working with a top predator. And these are living creatures, not robots. So they must be respected." You guys automatically think that just because they're living at Sea World, that automatically means that they're being abused and treated like circus freaks and slaves. And that's simply not true. Think about it: they don't even have to worry about hunting for their food or anything. It's given to them on a regular basis. Hell, they're treated better than most humans!

Happy Mouth 1. I don’t know if lack of health care is luxurious in your clearly entitled eyes but you contradicted yourself when you mentioned they “gave their lives.” Most SeaWorld whales die young. In fact, all but 3 have died young so far. 2. SeaWorld does not do any preservation work for wild whales. Those who study endangered populations such as the Southern residents have repeatedly stated that SeaWorld has been absolutely useless in their research (including funding). They also don’t do research outside of hormone studies and breeding (which is now banned), as they cannot reasonably study the behavior of captive whales. In their rebuttal to Blackfish, SeaWorld blatantly stated that Howard Garett and David Duffys we’re unqualified to speak about their whales’ behavior because they have only worked with wild whales. 3. The r-word is outdated. A group that thinks “boomer” is a slur should know this. But okay boomer. 4. SeaWorld does not promote the conservation of the species. They rarely mention endangered populations during shows or presentations, and the species as a whole isn’t even endangered. Bottlenose dolphins are actually at higher risk of extinction, they’re listed by the IUCN as Vulnerable. You wanna know who REALLY needs help right now? The vaquita. 5. Pollution is not a major issue for whales outside of Scotland and Washington. It usually affects small fish and marine invertebrates more than megafauna. 6. Sharks don’t attack orcas, especially since some ecotypes of orca eat sharks. 7. SeaWorld whales are not held with their families. Currently, six of the whales at SeaWorld San Diego, two at SeaWorld Orlando, and two at SeaWorld San Antonio are completely separated from their matrilineal relatives (which makes up natural pod structures in the wild). That’s 10/20. 50%. 8. Interactions with humans are just a fraction of the time whales spend. The rest of the day is spent floating at the surface to pass time. This is known as stereotypy, a repetitive behavior which serves no known purpose to the animal. Time at the surface allows heat in the tropical climates they’re held in to soften and bend the collagen in their dorsal fin. It’s also a mosquito magnet at night, with whales usually being covered in mosquito bites. Two whales, Taku and Kanduke, were actually KILLED by mosquito-borne illnesses. This behavior also leaves them prone to sunburns. 9. The 43 dead whales on SeaWorld’s kill count lived short, in enriching lives full of shows, familial separation, concrete chewing, chronic illness, aggressive behavior, injury, park to park transportation, stereotypy, artificial insemination, and dehydration as a result of the thawing of their fish for the sake of your entertainment. Hope you’re proud. 10. People DO complain about fish-keeping because the saltwater aquarium industry has single handedly pushed many small species of fish into endangerment of extinction. SeaWorld ALSO sources saltwater fish from the ocean, since most can’t be bred in captivity. 11. Dogs and cats are domesticated. It takes at least 40 generations to achieve this. Orcas are only 5 generations into captivity at most (Amaya). The comparison is also not even close for “wild living” because dogs and cats don’t have a natural habitat. And whales don’t fight rats in the streets because they are the apex predators of vast expanses of a completely different environment. 12. You would think the stress of bombs, nets, lassos, boats, and planes would have killed all of the young whales captured for display. It seems not. So how does going back where they spent millions of years evolving stress them out more than that exactly? Even worse, you don’t have ANY sources to back you up, as all whales who were released from captivity, including Keiko, survived over a year after their release at the very least. Flores, Pender, Springer, Charlie Chin, and Florencia were later observed in the wild for YEARS after their releases. Springer is still alive, and she has two calves now. 13. I’m gonna bring up Keiko again on the topic of release. His skin lesions and illnesses cleared up in a sea pen in Iceland before he was released back to that “filthy and sickly” water in 2002. Unfortunately he failed to reintegrate to a pod (since we don’t know which one was his) and he wound up seeking human attention in Norway. He died in a secluded fjord in 2003 of pneumonia, since there wasn’t much room for filtration of pathogens in there. 14. Bacteria is more concentrated in tanks than in the wild. This is why only captive saltwater fish are capable of catching serious cases of marine ich. The park in San Diego literally uses seawater in the tanks, so any bacteria out in the ocean is coming with it. Karen Pryor, retired curator of Sea Life Park Hawaii, states in her book, Lads Before the Wind, that dolphins’ immune systems are very weak. If not vaccinated within a day of capture or birth, dolphins die of disease in captivity within about a week. 15. SeaWorld Orlando was literally hit by Hurricane Irma 2 and a half years ago. All six whales survived (though one died in 2019), and they were in an open air exhibit in which the deepest point is only 45 feet. Staff were not with them at the time as it was unsafe for humans to stand with the risk of projectiles by the pools. 16. Orcas ALWAYS win fights to the death at sea. There are videos of orcas killing dolphins, porpoises, otters, belugas, seals, sea lions, moose, sharks, penguins, urchins, thousands of species of fish, and even large baleen whales in the wild. There’s even videos at SeaWorld of whales snatching pelicans, egrets, and seagulls from the sides of the pools and killing them. Captive whales have also killed 4 humans. Wild whales attacked 0 and killed 0. 17. Good eye noticing that trainers aren’t marine biologists. They’re psychologists, they know how to control these whales. Marine biologists rarely interact directly with SeaWorld’s orcas outside of vet check-ups. 18. I find it ironic that you called out “millennial-****s” for being on their cell phones when you used an electronic device to type this message and post it twice. 19. Staring at an animated phone is still better than staring at an empty blue wall for 20+ years. That is, if a whale is lucky enough to reach that age at SeaWorld. Shamu, Kilroy, Ramu, Kandu, Kona, Kandu III, Canuck, Frankie, Sandy, Winston, Kenau, Kona II, Canuck II, Kandu V, Kahana, Kotar, Shawn, Kanduke, Katerina, Samoa, Splash, Nootka IV, Taku, Nyar, Unna, Sumar, and Halyn weren’t so lucky. 20. SeaWorld does not research these whales outside of hormones. This is, again, because captive whales do not behave like wild whales. They also have different health problems than wild whales, such as constant illness, different (forced) pod structures, and excessive tooth wear. 21. SeaWorld will not make shows interactive again, as two trainers died in 2009 and 2010 as a result of SeaWorld-style shows. Both trainers were killed by whales owned by SeaWorld (Keto and Tilikum).

Or do their counterparts live two to five times as long as captive whales and eventually die of bodily degeneration? Disease is not a common cause of death in wild orcas, there’s usually another factor that weakened them before the disease can take them out. Captive whales in the LOWEST age bracket of death should not be at a disadvantage to illness. Wild whales rarely die between the ages of 15 and 25, and the fact that about half of the whales at SeaWorld died in this range is disturbing.

Orcas were NOT meant to be in a bathtub. The tanks aren’t even half as deep as the whales are long. They all need to be put back where they belong. The Whale Sanctuary Project is working on building seaside sanctuaries for captive whales and dolphins, that way they are free do go where they wish, and not be put under the stresses and frustrations of captivity. It is quite sad to see that this video has more likes than dislikes, this should be the total opposite. I saw an article or something the other day that said the average lifespan of a captive orca is 9 years. 9 YEARS folks! On the other hand, wild whales have been documented to live well into their HUNDREDS. Plus, wild orcas don’t have to worry about getting their teeth drilled, dehydration from the chlorinated tanks, starvation in order to perform, and the list goes on and on. My advice, if you have not done so already, watch “Blackfish” and do research, before you decide to go to one of these awful shows. Not to mention the fact that dolphins are killed in order to find the “perfect” specimen for performing. So, do your research before you purchase a ticket. I personally would suggest not purchasing a ticket at all, but again that is my personal opinion. Their routines help “strengthen their social bonds,” that is completely incorrect, killer whales come from different pods and each pod has a completely different dialect. Them putting different whales in a close confinement is like putting different people from different parts of the world, who speak different languages, in a room together and expecting them to get along. None of the whales understand one another, thus the MANY cases of aggression on one another and on trainers. There have been several cases of captive whales dying due to whale on whale aggression. Out in the open ocean, they have miles upon miles of where they can swim off their aggression and frustration. However, captive whales can’t do that. These trainers are so misinformed and given some false information.

Seaworld is known for Orcas but the majority of people go there for the park rides, food, and I think they have those underground aquariums with smaller fish. But I agree with you, they hold like 3-4 shows a day and that's too much. Orcas need more freedom, and if they refuse to build an expansion sanctuary type of area, they shouldn't be allowed to have Orcas. In South Africa they have these huge expansions for captive Lions and Elephants for example. Killer Whales are HUGE and that kiddie pool is what? 10 feet high? I hate it.

The species is generally untouchable once an adult, with only starvation and boats capable of killing an adult whale. Outside of Washington, both of these are rare. The species isn’t even endangered. 🤦‍♂️ I also posted a lengthy 21-point rebuttal to Happy Mouth’s comment on two separate comment threads. @itsikabitch9005 4 года назад
Angelina Milillo Immune systems bothers me because it’s rarely a comment made by those who actually work with captive cetaceans. Karen Pryor was the first curator of marine mammals at Sea Life Park in Hawaii. She was in charge of immunizations for newly captured dolphins. She details in her book, Lads Before the Wind, exactly what the immune system of a cetacean is like. Cetaceans have very weak immune systems, as there’s so much open space in the ocean that pathogens are very easy to distribute in such low doses that they can’t really affect dolphins and whales. This is something we can see with things like fin rot and marine ich in aquariums, wild saltwater fish do not suffer from those illnesses as a result of heavy filtration and LOTS of space. However, if a dolphin is to catch a pathogen and fall ill, that dolphin is nearly guaranteed to die. In captivity, like I said, there’s not much space to thin out the concentration of pathogens. As a result, those dolphins which are captured or born in captivity must be immunized on the very first day. If this does not happen, according to Pryor, that animal will die by the end of the week. So no, they’re immune systems aren’t weak. They’re literally like vaccinated children in a sea of anti-vaxxers. They come into contact with illness much more often than their wild counterparts. That’s just the truth of keeping all oceanic species in captivity.

I’ve been all over this comment section so if you want to read more of what I have to say literally pick any thread, but here’s what I want to say. Sea pens ARE a viable option for these whales. The whales are vaccinated and on antibiotics, so the “disease” risk SeaWorld keeps throwing around isn’t even a thing. Disease is rare in the wild specifically thanks to currents and diffusion, which help to dilute the concentration of pathogens. According to Karen Pryor, retired marine mammal curator at Sea Life Park in Hawaii, if a dolphin is not vaccinated within a week of being put in a tank, that animal is guaranteed to die of an illness. By the end of the week. Not only that, we have precedent: SeaWorld themselves sent five captive-born dolphins to the US Navy between 1984 and 2007. Almost all of them have lived above-average lifespans in the pens. The same goes for dolphins in sea pens around the United States, such as Dolphin Research Center and Theater of the Sea. As for rescue work, SeaWorld doesn’t need captive orcas to carry out rescues. They only spend 0.05% of their revenue on the rescue program every year, anyways. Even if they weren’t there, there’s 8 different locations in Florida that could take the place of SeaWorld Orlando, and 4 in California. Texas doesn’t even do rescues, they let TMMSN do all the work, then take the credit (I’m sure some people here have heard about Mattie, Gilly, Donley, Alice, Zip, or Rimmy). One last note, if you wanna support aquariums, there are much more scientifically-oriented nonprofits with legitimate concern for conservation to look towards. Enough of Georgia Aquarium, Miami Seaquarium, Marineland Canada, and SeaWorld hiding behind the mask of conservation when so many institutions actually follow through. Shedd Aquarium is well known for carrying out extensive studies on wild animals. Monterrey Bay Aquarium is almost single-handedly responsible for ALL of the information we know about jellyfish, deep sea organisms, and the effects of the fishing industry on wild stock along the Pacific coast. National Aquarium in Baltimore and New England Aquarium have been world leaders on the breeding of endangered seahorse species. Oregon Coast Aquarium, Vancouver Aquarium, and Clearwater Marine Aquarium are all well-known for their amazing rehab programs without any profit at stake. So maybe we should support the superpowers in the scientific community on the topic of marine life, especially since SeaWorld clearly has so much money that they can give their higher-ups a raise during a pandemic.

It's Ika B**** My goodness, you have a lot to say about this and you are clearly very impressed with yourself, but if you do not mind my saying so, your sea pen "solution" is simply taking the whales out of one cage and putting them in another. Leave them where they are. At least they are fed, given medical care, and they have the company of other Orcas. Tilikum was the exception, not the rule.
@itsikabitch9005

Tess d'Urberville Are you under the impression that all of those things are not present in sea pens? Anyway, no, that’s not the full extent of it. The primary issue with their current habitats involve shallow pools (resulting in sunburns, mosquito bites, and collapsed dorsal fins), sharp edges (based on Nakai’s injuries), potential for pathogen concentration (as described by retired curator of marine mammals for Sea Life Park, Karen Pryor), and concrete walls preventing the reliable use of echolocation. All of these can be reliably eradicated in a sea pen.

You can’t set free captive bred anything. They do not have the skills to survive in the wild. They would die of being attacked by others and starvation. They also don’t have properly built immune systems to handle the ocean. Releasing them would sadly be more cruel than keeping them in captivity. They definitely could use a bigger tank, be fed and cared for better, and not be used for entertainment. They have stopped their breeding programs recently, so once all the orcas have lived out their lives, there will be no more of this practice.

@Stupid Things Ok first of all dorsal collapse is incredibly rare in the wild. Especially for Icelandic whales (like these ones). Second of all, there’s more to it than “no bone.” Collagen destabilizes when exposed to intense heat (such as the Florida, Texas, and California sun, which none of the whales are naturally adapted to handle). The weight of larger fins will then cause collapse once the collagen has destabilized, and a lack of water pressure (since the pools are so shallow) will not help, either.

@Stupid Things There are 20 alive. For someone who says “educate yourself” you don’t even seem to know a single thing about the individuals who live/have lived at SeaWorld if you couldn’t even figure that out. SeaWorld has held a total of 61 non-infant whales. Of those whales, 20 are alive, 4 no longer live at SeaWorld (all 4 are now at Loro Parque in Spain), and the other 37 are dead. 36 of those whales died young. For some further demographics: Of those 61 whales, 29 are/were captures and 31 are/were born in captivity. One whale, Sandy, was rescued by Seattle Marine Aquarium. She lived at SeaWorld for four years before she died of pneumonia at the young age of 6 (unrelated to her stranding). Of those 29 captured whales, 16 were captured by SeaWorld or people hired by SeaWorld. The other 13 were purchased from other parks. Of those 31 captive-bred whales, 17 are/were hybrids and thus hold/held no conservational value. An 18th whale, Nalani, is inbred. There have been 18 failed pregnancies in orcas at SeaWorld. Orcas with more than one failure at SeaWorld include Kenau (1986 and 1991), Haida II (1994 and 2001), Takara (2012 and 2017), and Taima (2005 and 2010). Of those 18 failed pregnancies, 4 killed their mothers during labor (Samoa in 1992, Nootka IV in 1994, Gudrun in 1996, and Gudrun’s daughter Taima in 2010). I never said orcas couldn’t be classified as whales so I have no idea where that came from.

cristina Banuelos Tilikum had not been at SeaLand for 18 years at that point. Trainers didn’t enter the water with him specifically because he was deemed dangerous, since he was not desensitized at any point in his life. Despite knowing this, SeaWorld permitted trainers, including Brancheau, to lay in shallow water with him. The pony tail she had was not a violation of safety protocol, and neither was her presence on the ledge. Whales who grab trainers usually hold them under water only as long as humans can hold their breathe, not for how long the whale can. Tilikum violently scalped Brancheau while she was underwater, and held her under way longer than she could’ve held her breathe.
