I'm renting the E mount version with a Sony a6700 right now. So far, it's been great. I'm a birder/hiker and weight is a huge consideration for me. I took it with me birding and covered almost 4 miles without the weight being an issue. Will 500mm get me all the bird shots I want? Probably not. But I can see myself bringing this with me on more birding/hiking trips when I would leave a heavier lens at home and miss 100% of the shots. Well done, Sigma.
This features of OIS is very characteristic of Sigma lenses. Olympus 100-400 also has it (and it is rebranded sigma). DSLR 60-600mm is also like this to a degree however Canon R5 IBIS seems to smooth that jerks making them a bit rubbery (which is much better). I really hope that OM-Sigma 150-600mm will not be like this on G9II. I also sincerely hope you will test that combination someday too.
I own the 200-600mm and I am thinking of getting this lens, this might sound crazy but I would continue using my 200-600mm as my professional lens having more reach, a zoom, teleconverters, 30fps, on a tripod and more reliable autofocus. I would use the 500mm PF as a hiking lens and take advantage of not needing a tripod, lower handheld shutter speeds and amazing image quality to get amazing photos while on the move.
I sold the 200-600 because it is too big and heavy and have IBIS issues with Sony A7R series Cameras, I have ordered the Sigma 500mm F5.6 DG DN OS Sports
@@cameraprepper7938 I didn't have IBIS issues with my A7R IV but I had some autofocus problems and I couldn't get many sharp shots even at fast shutter speeds, in 10 shots I would get 1 sharp, maybe 6 slightly missed focus and 3 fully out of focus. Now I have the Sony A1 and don't have any problems. I feel the Sigma 500mm will be great on my A7R IV then keep the 200-600 on my A1
Unfortunately most likely not. The lens didn’t really intrigue me and my OM Systems rep never pursued getting me one, so not necessarily searching to review it. But possibly if I see enough people wanting to see something on it I can make an effort 👌
BTW I really hope you are still allowed to make reviews of OM-System / Olympus gear after your reviews of OM-1, 300mm PRO and 150-400mm PRO ;) I am looking forward to your review of OM-Sigma 150-600mm :D
@@JeremyNeipp I think they might have just killed 150-400mm PRO with their newest release. Based on RAWs provided by Petr Bambousek at max equal focal lengths (after aplying TC an/or crop as neccessary) I can see no advantage in sharpness in 150-400mm PRO as opposed to 150-600mm. A bit more brightness and internal zoomingsimply do not justify 3x higher price.
Funny you mentioned this lens to be interesting for M43 shooters😀.The announcement of this lens came at the exact time where I picked up my old hobby. I've been reading up on all that has happend over the past few years and seem to be losing faith in M43 because of the choices the companies (OM & Panasonic) make. I bought a G9II and will have fun with it for 2 years while saving up.. This lens made me think to move to a Sony setup, but... I don't like the fact that they block the use of a 1.4TC. This lens seems plenty sharp to be able to deal with that and it would have made it more flexible. 500 on my trips to the park & forrest 700 @ f8 when I'm out to certain fields/wetlands and when there's enough light. Me research took me to Nikon who seems to spoil their users with lenses like this (400 4.5, 600 6.3, 800 6.3). If a small wonder happens and Panasonic will produce some primes (for instance a 400 f4) I will probably stay.. I still believe in the story behind the system.. if not I'll probably migrate to something like this :)
Yea, I hate how Sony blocks certain compatibilities with third-party lenses as well. This lens is undoubtedly capable as shown on L-Mount systems. Thanks for sharing your M43 perspective as well! I think you're spot on with your train of thought :) no doubt Nikon does have possibly the best lens lineup in the business for wildlife rn.
HI. Thanks for your videos they are very interesting. Like this one from this Sigma 500mm. I would like to ask you a question, I now have both an S1 and an OM1 II with 300 f4. Could you tell me if it's worth selling all the m4/3 and keeping only the S1 by buying a Sigma 500mm? The only thing that scares me is that it's not a 600mm and that I often used Olympus 300 f4 multiplied by 1.4x. There is nothing wrong with m4/3 but I would like to recover money and just keep S1 for everything and also wildlife with Sigma 500mm. Or Maybe 150-600 is better? Thank you
Thank you! Personally, I'd sell the MFT setup you have if it was up to me, unless you wanted to keep it for more extreme portability. Otherwise, the Sigma 500 5.6 would probably be more than enough for most your use cases. Personally, I never felt the 500mm was a problem. Due to the sharpness of the glass and it being FF, it kept noise problems to a minimum when cropping in and the sharpness was still there, so I would say it's probably similar/if not better than your 300mm f4. The 150-600 is a good option too, but even though it has that extra 100, it's slightly softer... making it slightly worse in my opinion unless you need that adaptability of focal range. Now if only Panasonic could actually release a faster full-frame camera better suited to wildlife action shots - L-mount has a good selection of telephotos now, and this lens looks great, but the camera selection is still lacking. I'm expecting the Panasonic variant of the SL3 to be slow again, but an S1II that offers more speed would be seriously tempting to me. It's really disappointing that they've been stuck at 5-6FPS for years now, and they really don't need to offer much more in addition to that to make a good action camera now (mostly just CFExpress Type B as well to prevent buffer clearance problems like on the G9II).
@@cameraprepper7938 It drops with continuous AF unfortunately. It is roughly equivalent to the Sony A7IV in that regard I guess, but there's film cameras faster than that so I would quite like to see an upgrade 😅 I think the problem so far is that Panasonic have been using slow readout sensors which can't support faster whilst also doing C-AF. If they put out a stacked model they should be able to up it significantly. I mostly want something faster for birds in flight - 15-20 FPS is about the sweet spot for me.
I am starting to wonder if those stabilization issues have something to do with a combination of a given camera along with a given lens. Because I have had issues with Bouncing Video with several different camera brands. I wish Sigma would make an cheaper, Manual only lens. Say at about half the price. I shoot full manual, quite frequently.
I did only get to test this lens with one camera, so could be! However, I did make sure to turn my in camera stabilization off during testing too (at least half the time), and most the clips you see were taken accordingly. So I’m not sure if the camera body would have much effect on the stab when the ibis is turned off
Very nice rewiew thank U bro, but there is one certian question on which I coulden't find answer on your chanel. Consider the price of lumix S1II and lets say sigma 500 5,6 (or 60-600 or 150-600) is almost the same as Om1II with 300 f4 is there any sens for OM1? 300 f4 is one stop faster then Sigma and the S1 is about 2 stop better in low light then om1 so there is 1 stop difrence for the FF. That' s a good thing but not so deal breaker I think and honestly I can't find nothing like 600 f4 for FF in similar price, it's 2-3 times more expensive. So in that money the best we can have it's 1stop difrence for FF, but 300f4 is 100mm longer and the IBIS on OM1 is better, also it's a little bit lighter setup. But dose it compare in wild life? What do U think? When U crop the diference from 600mm mft to 500mm on FF it will be same result in sharpness low iso? And what about Sigma 150-600, how it compare?
Great question! So comparing the two exact setups you mentioned, I think you’re right that it’s difficult to make a case for the FF setup. The only real big benefit to the FF is the low light capabilities. You measured 1 stop better which is true through lens translations, however, don’t forget that FF sensors themselves outmatch current MFT sensors. So in reality you are getting a much more significant improvement in low light then just 1 stop. That’s the big pro for the FF setup you mentioned. However in price and reach, that MFT setup definitely will win out and that’s the big pro for that setup. Personally, I know it’s a matter of time for Panasonic to upgrade their main camera body significantly with what you need, so I think in terms of patience, it can pay off in that direction. In regards to the Sigma 150-600. I would say if you are going to always want to shoot tight shots, it’s pretty much the same result as your previous setup you mentioned with the exception that the 150-600 will be slightly softer. But if you need that focal zoom range, that’s an obvious benefit to it

I saw direct compare between Lumix S1 and G9 II iso performance and it's look like it is only two stops diference, so I think one stop of light is not the end of world especialy when useing good software. But mayby it's worth it when U shoot bears and wolfs mainly in bad light hmm? On the other hand on Oly U can have teleconverter I don"t know about this Sigma? 500mm may not be long enought for some shots? And have U try Pana Leica 200 2,8 mft? It's even sharper then 300 f4 (lab test) also with teleconverter and on f2,8 we have same performance as on FF f5,6... Anyway I saw your rewiew of G9II and OM1 and also S1II so what do U think is better for wild life FF or MFT (entry level FF and top level MFT)
If they rebrand this on Olympus mount, I would consider changing system for M43. From the leaks, seems like Sony is ignoring wildlife, and they prepare next 3 vlogging lenses (I mean leaks shows 3 lenses below 85 mm). LOL At first I though I need this lens, to change 200-600, but well.. 500 mm is not enough for birding, and lack of teleconverters hurts. I am going to wait at least one year, maybe they will update 100-400 or 200-600 with better glass and less weight.
To be fair, Sony have released the new Sony 300mm 2.8 GM, but yes there could be many more long prime tele Lenses from Sony, Tamron have a patent on a 350mm 4.0 that we may see (Sony have shares in Tamron).
@@cameraprepper7938 Yeah, but between patent and release it can take some time (years?) I understand 300 mm f2.8 is short tele, but you don't buy primes to ruin it with teleconverters (lower speed of the lens & lower quality). Nikon is dominating right there with their long (not looking at prices, just choices)... So sad looking on that. Even Olympus has very good situation right know, though it's M43.
