I think it's because I find myself needing the closer side more so when on shoots, so I always opt to have a slightly better lens for those situations. The 50 is a great all arounder, but realistically I'm using focal lengths that are either wider or closer on my 28-70 more often :) It's still a great lens, and it's one of those that I'd bring if I could only have one solid lens with decent lowlight/subject separation :)

The AF performance for photo was great, for video not so great (but that's due to the contrast detect AF system, not the lens!)

This lens allows you to get a much shallower depth of field, making it better for lowlight, portraits, and anything where you'd like to get more subject separation. And, also being a prime lens, it'll almost definitely have better overall image performance :)

Well the Panasonic S PRO 50mm is f/1.4 AND bigger AND heavier AND more expensive. So there is a market for this Sigma f/1.2 lens.

@@RobinParmarit’s also a phenomenal lens. I’ll be honest if you want any lesser than 1.8 there are MF options for L mount that get the job done. Pretty sure Mitakon has a 50mm f0.95 for it which I’ve heard is a beautiful lens.

Costs less than the S pro F/1.4 and cheaper than the 50 1.2 GM, the price isn't bad

Let me expand on my comment. First, it's not only this lens but others too whose prices are reaching for the stratosphere. I want photography to remain accessible and not an activity only for the financially privileged. Pointing out that there are more expensive lenses doesn't justify the cost of this lens. It's a bunch of plastic at the end of the day, hardly comparable to the metal and glass builds of yesteryear. The incremental gain in light was useful on film. A faster lens made focusing easier and mattered in low light since your film ISO was fixed. Not the case with contemporary digital cameras. I can crank my S5 to ridiculous ISO values with no problem. That leaves the boring trend towards blurring out everything but the centre of the frame. Sometimes that works, sure. I consider it a "special effect" since it's not how we see. It draws attention to the properties of the lens and detracts from the actual subject. More often it's simply lazy and uncreative photography / cinematography. Besides, eve if you want this effect, a f/1.8 aperture is more than sufficient. If you know how DOF actually works. As it turns out I own two 50/1.2 lenses. Because it was fun to experiment... and eventually come to the conclusions already stated. Yes they are manual focus... which means I also have a tactile aperture control, plus a solid metal build that will last decades longer than the current products ever hope to. I continue to buy vintage lenses because they are a better value proposition than most contemporary products. And simply more fun. YMMV.

@@speed_and_motion I have a Canon 35mm f/2 IS USM that has stabilisation. I use it all the time for video There are others- Tamron has a few , e.g. 45mm with VC

My Sony 35mm Gmaster Doesn't have OIS and the image quality is amazing. Also I guarantee you this 50 on a Lumix camera will have better stabilization than most other brands with stabilizzed lenses.

Who needs OIS ? 😅
