That was a delightful video. I'm a product developer, so it was interesting for me to see your struggles and hear your impressions of your experience with the new machine. And I was really impressed with your editing, adding notes and insets and titles where it enhanced and clarified your explanation. Well done!

Dear Margaret, thanks for this video. I've been watching your vids for years now. Don't have an Addi, but recently remembered that I bought a toy machine at a thrift store. Dug it out and was pleased to discover that it was this new, improved Singer toy. Will keep watching to learn all I can before spending big $$ on an Addi. Thanks again for sharing your wealth of knowledge.

Thanks SO much for this! I just received my knitting machine (Amazon, under $20, exact same design and color as the Singer but sold under a different name) and followed along with your video as the English translation on the included instruction sheet was difficult to decipher. Works beautifully and will be perfect for making sock blanks. Oh, and mine does have a different color starting needle. Again, many thanks.

The knitting club at my school has one of these, and we usually make our scarves using the flat mode on the machine. They actually feel really nice while you're using them if they're secured down. We did that with a few pieces of duct tape. I think our teacher got one for $9 at Hobby Lobby with a coupon.

I picked up this machine recently. For some reason I didn't look for review videos before buying. I think it works great for what it is, and in fact thank there may be something wrong with yours as mine works much smoother. Mine also came with the instructions, hook, and needle. Now it's time to look at your channel for some tutorials on how to finish things out because as you can imagine the instructions are not real great on that part nor do they tell you what kind of yarn to use. Thanks for the great video.

My first thought watching this review is that there must have been a bunch of patents on the Addi machine that ran out, letting Singer use all of their much better designs. Thanks for putting this review up, I got curious about knitting machines a few days ago but I'm definitely not ready to shell out $100+ dollars for one, especially since for my purposes they look kind of limited. This machine might make make a good trial.
@sheepishlysharing
@sheepishlysharing 6 лет назад
If you're willing to sew panels together, they're not limited at all! Be sure to watch my FAQ video to learn more about these machines and remember that this one really is just a toy. It's a great way to get your feet wet with circular knitting but it really doesn't compare to the Addi machines. Be sure to adhere it to the table for the best results (Command Strips work well and won't damage the table.) Here's a link to my blog page that has just about everything I know about these machines on it! sheepishlysharing.com/circular-knitting-machines-useful-links-like-the-addi-express/

Very interesting and useful review, Margaret Olander. A couple years ago, I purchased the Addi Express king size knitting machine from an online vendor. I never got it to work properly, no matter what type or size of yarn I used. I broke several of the needles, in fact, and purchased a kit to repair the machine. I completely disassembled the machine (not that big of a deal) and found the internal gears were of metal, unlike the exterior that is of plastic, and well lubricated with a white grease. I got the machine working properly, but the knitting was so unpredictable, that I returned the machine, along with the spare needles. I think I paid well over $300 for that piece of junk. The Singer machine looks to be of a similar quality, though the price is more appropriate for what you are getting. I may end up purchasing a Singer since you proved how well it can function. As a background: I have experience with all-metal, circular sock knitting machines (LeGare's and Gearhart's) so I have a feel for how a professional level machine should behave. The Addi is not a professional machine, it's just priced like one. I do appreciate your taking the time to make this very educational review. Thanks.

+John Bozzola OOooooo.... a circular sock machine! I'd love to see that in person! Be sure to watch Erin (Gimmeyarn418)'s review/tips on the Singer (link in the description box of this video). When she adhered it to the table it made a huge difference in performance! I hate that you had such trouble with the Addi as my machines are great and have never given me trouble (knock on wood) however... I have a theory. I bought mine very early on. Once the "craze" caught on, I think they may have had problems with production quality as I do hear stories like yours every now and then. Glad you were able to return it.

You may be right about the quality of the Addi falling off. I must praise the vendor, Nancy's Notions, for taking the machine back. Their purchase guarantee is excellent and I will continue purchase from them. I look forward to seeing all your other videos as they are quite informative. Happy New Year.

Aaah!! I am so excited to see and hear this video. I know its a far cry from an addi machine but cost wise it is right up my alley. ha ha. I have always wanted to donate hats or something to kids at schools or hospitals but my arthritic (RA) hands and managing 3 young kids does not allow me to get much done, much less donate a box full. This gives me hope that I can be more productive. Oh Miss Margaret, you have made my day!! I hope your day is just as wonderful.!!

Barbara Marquez I feel the same way, Barbara, but we aware that this is the SMALL one and only makes preemie sized hats UNLESS you do some flat panels and sew them together. Have you watched the FAQs? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Kq3j6fC4BP8.html I recommend the Innovations if you're in the market for a more affordable king size machine. (Not sure where to buy them or their current cost but a quick Google search can tell you.)

I just got one of these Singer machines and I learned that it does not like Red Heart Super Saver, but LOVES Caron Simply Soft and other thinner yarns. I have the loops and threads bigger one as well, and that one likes Red Heart, but doesn't like thinner yarns. I thought that was odd. I'm saving up to buy my addi's in the next few months! I love your videos! :)

What's REALLY odd, Kelly, is that different people have different experiences with the same machines! Suzy (of the Facebook Group Addi King Loomers and Knits) says that each machine has it's own little personality! Ex: Red Heart Super Saver works great for some and not at all for others! Weird!

I was wanting a knitting machine to make sock blanks for gradient yarn. I watched the other video first (which was painful to watch towards the end,) and I was thinking I would just have to save up for a while to get the addi. I just purchased this item and I have made several items already. I have noticed several things: 1. it works much better when secured to a tabletop (I have a support that was built special for my large Addi machine). If you can mount it to a surface with a hole in it to let the knitting drop through it works really well. 2. If the knitting twists up under the machine, it tends to start dropping stitches. 3. If you hold your fingers of your left hand against the stitches on the inside of the tube it helps keep the stitches in place much better. I used both #3DK yarn and a tightly woven #4 and with care it worked really well. I would be happy to post photos of my knitting machine table if anyone is interested.

@judyklinedinst1694
@judyklinedinst1694 8 лет назад
Hi Margaret. I have the old type singer machine you first showed. It and this one also, has an issue with the gears slipping. That is what that odd noise is. I think that the way you are holding the yarn to the side is causing it to touch the side of the plastic yarn feeder and is not the right angle of attack for the yarn to feed properly in the feeder. That is the reason that it jumped out of the whole and also, why it is giving you an issue going around the second time to put the yarn on all needles. This also will cause irregular stitches. I don't mean to criticize, just trying to help. Did enjoy your demo. Judy K.
@sheepishlysharing
@sheepishlysharing 8 лет назад
+Judy Klinedinst No offence taken, Judy! I welcome new information especially when presented in a kind manner as you've done! That video is 2 years old and I confess to not having touched that machine since then. Hmmm.... do I feel another video coming on???

Thanks for the update. My interest in such.a machine is mainly that I want to make sock blanks for yarn-dyeing. Alas, the price for this machine has gone up to more than $25 by now on Amazon (regardless of seller), so I'll either have to wait for a sale or buy one of the identical-looking “knock-offs” (that are probably made in the exact same factory as the brand name Singer version).
@sheepishlysharing
@sheepishlysharing 7 лет назад
If all you want it for is sock blanks, it will do the job... especially with sock yarn. Important tip is to make sure it's affixed to the table in some way. (Command Adhesive strips work well.) However, remember that this is a fixed-gauge machine so the result you'll get is something like knitting fingering weight yarn with 6-7mm needles. $25 is not a bad price when you think about it in terms of the time you'll be saving. You may want to look at the NSI, too. (link in description box)

Thanks! I ended up getting this and have just ordered my first undyed yarn from KnitPicks for making into a sock blank. Next I need to get the dyes I want from Dharma Trading Company, but first I need to get their acid-dye chart (since it'll likely be more accurate than my computer screen). When I've got everything together, I might video my progress (not sure, since it would involve a friend filming me, if he has time).

I think this is much more worth it ! comparing the smaller addi price! even tho its fiddly. I will get this and just the larger addi thanks for the review! and I think I will get a second one and take it all apart if I can and see if there's a way to help it move smoother. it sounds like stuck gears due to tension or something well but I don't know how these work but it's like that in other machines like a ball winder
@sheepishlysharing
@sheepishlysharing 8 лет назад
There is a link in the description box to a video by Gimmeyarn418 where she shared some tips and tricks. We've since discovered that it works so much better when you affix it to the table in some way. The gears didn't seem to stick, it was more like the tension from the yarn that hung it up in places. Affixing it to the table seemed to help with even feeding, etc. It's SO MUCH BETTER than that old version!

I do have to say this machine works well for a child's toy. I was watching for a really good coupon to try this out i didn't wanna buy something full price if it was gonna break. Jo'anns had a 55% off coupon so i took advantage i payed $20 for it the store is askin $39.99. Works really great with baby sport or baby light yarn. Worsted #4 kinda struggles. I dont understand how sooo many ppl have issues with this product. I do charity work for hospital NICUs and it makes the perfect preemie cap when the tube is doubled on itself(about 65 knitted rows). I made 3pairs of socks and 10 preemie caps within 2 days. Question is.....how long is it goin to last with constant usage!!!
@sheepishlysharing
@sheepishlysharing 6 лет назад
You asked the million dollar question... how long will it last?! We don't know but the good news is, if you have to buy another, you're still coming out ahead. 2 of these machines are still considerably cheaper than one Addi Express! (You can get them on Amazon for around $20 these days.)

My 8 year old grand daughter got both the singers this past Christmas. I got her the improved one at Home Goods for $15, and my mother in law got her the old one on clearance from Oliver's for $5. I found the old one to be a PITA. Every time the tension got tight it did that stripping sound and hard to turn. Dropped stitches all over ugh. Wanted to smash it on the floor lol. The improved one was still a PITA (pain in the a$$). Mine has a white needle that shows where to begin, it also has sticky black pads to stick on feet to grip the table. IT still moves all over and I found that not having a weight to pull it down was not handy. If you don't have a table with a hole in it, the yarn will start to wad up under it. I tried a few different types of yarn, but any that are fuzzy or thick, did not work. Any tension on it makes it sound like its stripping out. Was NOT impressed with either of them. They are toys as far as I am concerned. Anyone wanting to do quality work should not get one of these.
@sheepishlysharing
@sheepishlysharing 6 лет назад
You're right... they ARE toys. People are so eager to try circular knitting but either can't afford the Addi machines or are scared to make the investment in something they may not enjoy so I'm always on the lookout for cheaper options.

The old antique metal ones with metal needles and a weighted bonnet to control tension are much better. I think you can still get one with metal needles but without all the features of those old units. They still sell replacement metal needles though. Probably because industrial sock machined probably still use the same needles.

The legs pop off of mine. the first rows are iffy, thank goodness I didn't get it for a kid or expect to knit anything but a tube that I could dye my white wool yarn to make the variegated yarn that is popular today. I've asked my husband to cut a hole in a piece of plywood so I can make my long tubes of yarn and I can add yarn weights to get it to keep moving down.

Yes, making "sock blanks" is a popular use for this cheap machine! If you look through my Addi Playlist you'll see the little $20 tool bench I use so my yarn can drop down the middle.

As far as the different color needles to delineate the first stitch....just put a drop of nail polish on the machine at first stitch needle and if you want you cando that for all the needles that match the Addi. I find the singer perfect for me. I could not spend $200.00 or more for a machine to do a craft on. I am on a fixed budget so the price does matter. But I will watch your videos to learn how to use my machine and get patterns. Thank You for sharing your talents.

Good review. it's an option for those who are on a budget and cannot afford the Addi machine. Perhaps there is some way of clamping down the Singer as that is the main advantage of the Addi. The fact that it doesn't move about on the table as you are using it.

+Mia Moss Full disclosure: I've only used my machine for circular knitting projects. I don't enjoy making flat panels on it as I find it tedious. BUT you CAN increase and decrease on it if you're so inclined and many people do. Look for videos by Suzy (I think it's Suzy AddiKingLoomersandKnits). She also runs a Facebook group by that name, or rather, that long name.) In flat panel knitting you can use only as many hooks as you want but never just skip one or you'll drop that stitch.

Very good idea, geraldine, to start with an inexpensive version first BUT just keep in mind that the better machines (Addi Express) are easier to work with. Use this to see the POTENTIAL in circular machine knitting keeping in mind that the cheaper machines can be frustrating. And by "thin rolls" I'm guessing you mean the tubes produced in circular mode. Remember that flat panels are also options. Sew them together for lots of options. I'm always amazed at what I see people create with these things! I have lots of novelty scarf options for the tubes in my tutorials. Non-slip mat. Hardboard x2. Something heavy and thin (like several dozen washers or a sheet of metal smaller than the square formed by your machine's four feet), Rubber Washers x8. matching bolts and nuts x4. Hot glue. Drill. parchment paper. Drill holes in the four feet. Drill holes in the locations of the holes of the feet into the two pieces of hardboard. Put a screw with the head down and the shaft up through in each of the four holes in one sheet of hardboard. Put the weight material on top of the hardboard. Hot glue around the screws the same height as your weights. Put the next sheet of hardboard down. Hot glue between the two sheets of hard board to seal the edge. Two rubber washers around each screw. Put the machine on the screws. Bolt it down. Turn it upside down. Hot glue over each of the four feet. Turn over and press into parchment paper on a hard surface while the glue is still warm. Continue the previous two steps until you have a disc of hot glue covering the screw heads that is also approximately 2 inches in diameter. Set on a clean flat surface. Your machine will now give you fewer troubles and still be sort of portable. For better results, just bolt it to a table and throw portability out the window.

Not knowing your mother, it's really hard to say! If she does a lot of charity knitting and is patient (it's not smooth like the Addi and you have to coax it along), then she may like it. If she's never seen anything like this and it comes out of the blue, then no. It will be frustrating... although using only #3 yarn will help with that.

Hello Margaret, I have a question. I have been knitting for 15 years but am completely new to machine knitting. I bought this machine and I saw in another video how you said that to mark the starting needle, you switch to panel knitting on the side, then spin the handle until the machine stops and then you mark that as your first needle, which I have done. I'm fumbling A LOT through trying to knit flat! My question is, to mimic the addi's 3 black needles, which other 2 needles should I mark with a sharpie, the 2 to left or the 2 to the right? Or 1 on each side? Goodness, I hope that made sense! :) And I also want to say that I just LOVE your channel!
@sheepishlysharing
@sheepishlysharing 8 лет назад
Machine knitting is a whole new skill, isn't it, Erica?! Mark the 2 needles to the left of the first black one. Counter clockwise is the cast on row (and the standard direction for circular knitting as well). And for what it's worth, I don't have the patience for flat panel knitting (even on the Addi) so I leave that to others. 😜

Dear Margaret, I purchase this singer machine right after you posted this video because I wanted to learn on how to use this machine, the very first thing that I did when I bought this machine is to put a drop of lubricant oil inside of every other needle then I started to knit, I did not like it at first because some of the stitches were to big or drop plus the yarn that I was using was not the one for this machine, for some reason it only likes red hart super saver, but still didn’t do much with this machine I was busy loom knitting dolls, am the one that ask you if it was possible to make the dolls on this machine that Denise from loomahat teaches on her tutorials and you did answer to my question, I learn how to use this machine and yesterday while watching this video I was on my second tube that am going to use to make the addi express pro pocket slippers from little john’s yarn tutorial, the tubes look to me like if the were made on the small addi!! Well, you can use a marker labeled "permanent" like a Sharpie or some other brand but eventually even that will wear off as the yarn continually passes over the top of the needles. Something I've noticed for these kid marketed kits (from experience) is that not only are some things usually missing from the pack, but the instructions aren't really instructions. Flat panels require advanced skills and lots of practice to do them properly and they DO work on this machine. This video by Suzy Notting demonstrates on the Addi Express but the technique works exactly the same on this machine. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tcPVrhCngcY.html

I am curious. Do you think I could make a pair of leg warmers from any of those machines for not too thin a pair of legs? That would hold well? Years ago I got a pair of leg warmers, does not compare to what they sell now which are small and thin and short. The pair I have is wide. Fits my leg comfortably and it's soft maybe it has to do with yarn probably but I can't find it out there anywhere a pair like that and they're long. They go over my knees. So I'm wondering if one of these machines I could use to make myself a pair of leg warmers? What do you think?

Tough question! Sizing on these machines is best done with trial and error. The measurement of your leg, the yarn choice and the tension of the user all make a difference in the sizing.

That helps! ☺ I'm gonna give it a try and if all else fails, keep it for the grand children. Or other things hmmmm. Either way it will work out. Thank you 😁

Have you ever tried the Loops & Threads Knit Quick machine? I just bought one from Michaels and I can't find any video tutorial on it andywhere.

I just uploaded a review of this machine a few hours before you posted this! No need for specific tutorials for this machine. Look for any Addi Express tutorials and you can do the same thing. (I have a playlist on my channel.)

Thanks. I'm going through your playlist now. I see the only "difference" in the Addi, Innovations and Loops and Threads seem to be the number of needles. Loops one only has 40, Innovations 42 and Addi 46. I may get a sport weight ball and give it a go before returning it. I can't afford the Addi lol
