Finally got a new pair of skates! After watching lots of review videos, I had it narrowed down to USD Aeons or THEM 909's. A tip from a viewer led me to these at half price, so it was the 909's. Even Seth got a pair. We both love them, though as you will see my skating in them was cut short due to a dumb mistake on my part. Now I wait to skate again.

Oh noooooo, can't believe that bad luck you recently get 🥺 On the other hand, your drops in the new skates and 180 look great 👏 Wish you a speedy recovery 🤞

Thank you! This one is tough, I am almost a month into it now and still have pain. I am skating again, but very easy. Its giving me time to work on the backwards skating on flat ground, so its not all bad.

Not the smartest thing I have ever done, but boy I was mad at myself. Recovery is going well, just a bit slower than I would have liked.

Yea, its not so bad getting hurt doing something cool, but this one was a total blunder on my part. The older I get the more of those I seem to be making!

New Subscriber to your Channel ... I am 50 and just started skating for the first time, naturally you are a great inspiration to me ... BUT .... I have only watched two of your uploads so far, the 1st ended with a proximal Hamstring tear and this one with an MCL injury .... errrr, have I chosen the right hobby :D ....... keep up the great work

It probably does look like an injury fest, but its all my fault and no reflection on the sport itself. As with anything on wheels, there is certainly some element of risk, but I think my push to try and keep pace with my 20 year old son drove me to try and progress faster than my body was able to. The MCL tear has let me reflect on that, and I have changed my attitude so that now I am slowing down and working on getting comfortable with the basics instead of simply trying more and more new things. It hurt to let go of the dream of keeping up with my son, but in the end a slower, safer progression will make for more fun in the long run. Good luck on your journey, take it at your own pace, pad up for protection, and enjoy it. It is an awful lot of fun!

@@theaverageoldguy you mentioned in another video about general fitness vs specific fitness .... are you doing anything in the gym specific to skating, ie additional exercises to strengthen the abductors/aductors, hamstrings, or ballance reactions or pylometrics ... if so I would love to see apost about additional off wheel workouts you are doing ??
@theaverageoldguy
@theaverageoldguy 4 месяца назад
@@johnhudd2660 I did do a video with some agility work called Old Men Can't Jump where I do some jumping and agility training. That training has been curtailed at the moment as I recover from the MCL issue, but I also do general training several times a week like bench press, pushups, overhead press, pull-ups, kettlebell swings, goblet squats, indian club swings etc. I have not made a video of any of that in a while though I did one a long time ago called A Week of Weights. I don't always do the same exercises, but I do try to strength train at least 2 to 3 times a week. I was working hard on mobility before the hamstring injury as well, and hope to get that started again soon. That was simple stuff like 90/90 stretches and other back and leg work. Mobility has always been my weak point, a lifetime of distance running and many injuries has left me in a sad state where mobility is concerned.

I am almost at that month already. I still have pain and don't fully trust the knee, but I am doing some easy skating and working on my backwards skating more, so that's a silver lining!

Seems like they are coming more often and last longer as I get older! I am back on the skates now, but taking it very easy. I am at almost 1 month and I still don't trust my knee, but its progressing slowly.

I am back on the skates, though taking it very easy. I like the 909's more and more as I use them, though both my son and I have had our cuff bolts come loose several times. Going to see if some loktite will fix that.
@rcansave12222

Those are legit solid street skates. You'll be hard-pressed to find a better overall pair IMO. You'll also get used to flat setup - you'll be faster and more maneuverable. And don't forget to check your hardware EVERY time you go out. The last thing you want is an axel or frame bolt popping out mid-trick @@theaverageoldguy

@@rcansave12222 That's no joke, after my son lost a cuff bolt (which we later found) in Apex we check them every time we go out and several times each session.
