The Skoda Scala is probably the most practical and reasonably priced family compact car on the market today. The Skoda Scala fits into the range between the Skoda Fabia supermini and the larger Skoda Octavia hatchback. With SUV sales going through the roof, the Scala shows that Skoda still views the conventional family hatchback market section of the market as important as the family SUV. Although wholly owned by VW Group and sharing a few under the skin elements of the VW Golf, The Skoda Scala doesn’t use the Golf’s platform; instead, it sits on a stretched version of the less expensive Polo and the Skoda Fabia, which helps keep the price down. In addition, the Skoda Scala is longer than the VW Golf, but has a much bigger boot, 467 litres, thats almost 90 litres larger with the seats up, or 140 litres larger with them folded down.
With the Skoda Scala everything works as it should and the driving experience feels solid and secure. It’s definitely a hatchback, although it resembles an estate, and most drivers will be pleasantly surprised with its performance.
There are two petrol engines available for the Skoda Scala. The entry-level three-cylinder 1.0-litre turbocharged engine produces 95bhp and a more powerful version produces 115bhp. There’s also a 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 148bhp that manages 0-62mph in 8.2 seconds. The entry-level turbocharged 1.0-litre 95BHP engine is the only unit available with a five-speed manual gearbox. All other petrol engines come with a six-speed manual gearbox or a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox.
In terms of equipment, the Skoda Scala doesen't disappoint. Even the entry-level S model gets a 6.5-inch infotainment screen, air conditioning and electric windows, plus alloy wheels and LED headlights. SE models and above get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, so you can use your phone’s apps for music and navigation if you wish.
Safety is ensured with the Skoda Scala as its Euro NCAP safety test received the full five stars.
