This video is to explore the key differences between the brand new Sony 16-35mm F2.8 GM II and the relatively new 16-35mm F4 PZ G lens.
Can you get away with just getting an F4 lens or do you need to go that extra price bracket and get the GMaster. There are many things to consider before you think one is already better than the other. Always consider your own circumstances and what you actually need.

I really enjoy having both the 16-35pz and 20f1.8 to pair with my zv-e1 which gives me options between versatility and low light/depth of field yet keeping the rig compact.

really appreciate you talking about the fact fast glass doesn't matter for low light on Sony since you can bump ISO to 12,800 which you can't even consider on other camera brands, something people don't usually mention.

Nice job as usual. I have the PZ f/4 and I love it. I don't see myself getting the 2.8 GMII. I think that when I want more blur I'll use my 24mm f1.4 GM or my 35mm f1.4 GM. To me, the 16-35mm is more of a documentary lens for when I don't have time to set up the shot. A f4 has been just fine for those occasions. Thanks again. Love your work.

Awesome video mate and love the channel. I have the 16-35 PZ and the 24 1.4 GM. This combination for me is much better than the 16-35 GM, which costs more than my two lenses combined! My combination gives me more versatility and the f1.4 is quite a lot noticeably better than 2.8, plus gives a more unique bokeh. Also for landscape shots at 16mm I'll be stepping down the aperture anyway. Great comparison, would love to see some more tutorials from you on how you plan a shoot, particularly the b-roll , transitions and then editing. Cheers!!

About balance on a Gimbal and Focus Breathing: there was a Potato Jet interview with an engineer from ARRI, where he said that changing focus naturally causes focus breathing, because to focus you need to change position of an element inside of a lens (effectively slightly changing lens focal distance). This mean that if you want to avoid focus breathing, you need to introduce an extra element in the lens which would compensate when changing focus. This what ARRI does in their signature primes and I think this might be the case with GM II

One thing that was better at 2.8 was the medium shot separation at 35mm. Like you said, closeups not so much but the medium shots have better separation which is useful with run n gun and saves me some time to squeeze out an extra shot without reaching for my 24-70mm. I have the GM II preordered mostly for the lighter weight and keeping that subject separation. Landscapes it would be overkill (don't need background blurred)
@JasonMorrisphotocinema
@JasonMorrisphotocinema 10 месяцев назад
you're right. At 35mm is where you will definitely notice the big difference. Specially if you need a closer focus distance which will give you even more bokeh

The PZ 16-35 is outstanding! It’s actually lighter than the 20mm 1.8. I use it all the time for Real Estate photos but for real estate videos, I’ll use the 14mm 1.8. That lens picks up where the 16mm and f4 may leave me wanting a bit more. Amazing combo. Dope video!

I bought the 16-35 pz thinking that I’d send it back, but surprisingly I really like it. Yes we all want a fast lens but lve found it’s not an issue for what I do and as you’ve mentioned, the Sony cameras are low light beasts! Lightweight and internal zoom makes it great on gimbals and as I’ve mentioned, thought I’d be sending it back, but glad I didn’t.

thanks for this review, this has been exactly what i wanted to know... that 16-35pz lens is really worth its value where everything is so expensive. it's not much more expensive than the apsc counterpart. the pz lens is also smaller and more compact than the gm.

Thank you for the video. I know each lens has pluses and minuses but it would be great to see those compared separately for video and stills. Just my opinion for what I was looking to take away. Had the v1 GM and have the v2 on pre-order but have the PZ f/4 in my hands. Bought from a friend who left Sony for Nikon and it was really brand new. Also own the other GM II midrange and telephoto zooms and thought I would try to complete the set but still question if it’s worth it. For me in the midrange and telephoto it definable was worth the f/2.8 but at the wide end? Just curious if you have looked at other wides like the Sigma 16-28/2.8 DG DN. It doesn’t have PZ, which as a stills shooter I don’t want, it’s small and light (although 420 gm) as well. Continue to rethink this lens selection.

Thanks for the comparison! When the 16-35PZ came out last year, it was the lens I’ve been looking for. I’m a travel photographer and a girl, so for me a lightweight lens is the most essential! With landscapes I mostly shoot af F8-F16, thus not even needing the F2.8. Before that I used the 24GM, also because it was the most lightweight option out there (and I personally don’t like Tamron). Maybe for you strong guys size and weight don’t matter! But it’s the first thing I look at when considering buying a lens.

I must admit the gmaster does give you more options with that f2.8 but the low light performance of the zv-e1 makes the f4 lens fine to use. Tough choice but maybe go the f4 lens then extra money put towards a fast prime like a 20mm f1.8 or 24mm f1.4

Thanks for the review! A clever engineer at Sony might had thought: Hey if you mount an Nd Filter, it has to slightly shifts its weight towards the body to compensate the Nd Filter center weight moving more outwards. @jasonlau8944
@jasonlau8944 10 месяцев назад
depends on use situation I will say, for interior wide shot I prefer a smaller aputure to see thing more clearly, while for interviews and documentaries, normally it's hard to go lower than F4 for a wide shot cam A, since you might need to capture the relationship between the environment and the interviewees, while nowadays most sony camera have dual ISO, Noise problem already not a big deal though, F2.8 might be benefits in just a shallow depth of field nowadays, but I rarely do a wide shot with F2.8 in a wide shot indeed, for F2.8 or more, I rather grab another 24-70 2.8 or 70-200 GM2 for B-Roll more better.

As a real estate videographer and photographer you’ll never find me at F2.8 unless it’s a detail shot. Photos are always shot F7.1 or F8 to ensure everything is in focus Video F4 ensures all establishing shots are sharp and in focus. With Sony bumping the ISO is perfectly fine to accommodate for the smaller aperture.

Do you ever shoot in lower light settings? Or are you pretty much always in broad daylight?

i'm also an REP myself. the only issue with the PZ lens for me is the barrel distortion but only around 16mm though which i rarely use. The widest i used it is 18mm.

Balance it around 21mm and it should be balanced on both ends

Wish GM2 was internal zoom and 1mm wider.

1mm! I can agree about internal zoom but 1mm won't make a significant difference really

Go Canon Mirrorless and get the Canon RF 15-35mm F2.8. there goes your 1mm wider

Pretty good review. The only problem is that you did not mention the original 16-35mm. Skipped right over it.
