nice review. I don't understand how you use focus area. we see a red rectangle at center and it tracks faces. When we are in spot mode and spot is on side of EVF, we need to quickly set the spot on the recognized face square to be in focus on face when we press the shutter. here you seem to have both modes acting together. In my case I am often in street, take pictures of flowers, items, architectures,... and people coming to the frame so I am mainly in spot mode and want to quickly jump on a ace coming.
Pretty amazing camera. As an original a7RIV user, the new a7RV still has high ISO noise which at this point with technology is an issue which still requires at least for me, post processing with programs like Topaz DeNoise or ON1 NoNoise which adds precious time to the editing workflow. The 61mp sensor was and is a game changer with the a7RIV and a7RV for deep field cropping which is why I live with the added post time requirement. Frankly I am not interested in UHD video and would hope to see the camera function investment in a high megapixels' with better noise processing in the near future. I jumped ship from Canon when the a7RIV came out because they, Canon were stagnant for a long time in coming out with something worthy of my investment which Sony was beating the pants off its competition. As you stated, you too are a photographer not a videographer, primarily. How many other photographers would rather see just a 1K video stuck in the new camera (or no video) but putting the investment in better photo quality at high megapixels? The AI that Topaz and ON1 uses is amazing. The a7RV with its new AI processor is a good direction for Sony and others to be moving. Trash the video section and give me a better photographers camera! I don't care to be spending in the video department.
Everything that makes the camera better at video also makes it better at photography. To show anything in the viewfinder, it's constantly shooting video. Until you press the shutter and engage the mechanical shutter, it's always shooting video, and if you use the electronic shutter, it's basically a video camera. Making it better at video makes it better at photo. I don't understand people complaining about video in their cameras. I shoot stills like 95% of the time on my cameras, but fully understand that video processing makes the camera better at photos. This particular camera even has a dedicated video mode switch, so you can leave it in stills and program the video record button to do something else, then you don't even have to experience video at all. Why are people still complaining about this in 2022.
Excellent video. How do the skin tones look to you? I feel they are looking more magenta then newer cameras starting with a7siii. I speculate it’s from the older sensor it’s using. I am going back and forth between the a1 and rv.
I'm not sure if the image quality degradation of the viewfinder during tracking can be avoided. It probably occurs because the camera needs all of its cpu power to do the tracking calculations. That's why only very little computation power is available to generate / display the viewfinder image.
It can’t even do 10fps uncompressed… it is not even better than the A7-IV in that regard. I really don’t get it, it has that dumb 8K blabla but the damned thing doesn’t even have 10fps uncompressed.
u forgot to mention this camera still cant touch the screen to change settings while shooting, cant touch the screen while play back the video, the AF is still struggling especially animal AF , insect AF
Is there any problem with the "M" & "S" raw files in Photoshop or Lightroom? At the A7iv i had a problem with theese File types, only the "L" Raw files worked normaly in the Adobe programs, at the "M" and "S" raw files I can't edit the files.
As a wedding photographer, really not much point to upgrade to the A7RV. As I mentioned in other comment threads. If it had an internal 1-2TB SSD, better connectivity options like a 5G module for real time upload to a cloud storage or built in creative modes like double exposure, focus stacking, pixel shift etc in-camera, then yeah it might be worth picking up the A7RV, but with the few improvements. Just stick with other A7 series cameras like the A7IV
I’m going to wait for the A9III. That camera will benefit more from AI. Hopefully we can get a 36MP stacked sensor with even better low light performance. I currently have an A7III and am still quite happy with it. I do almost no video though, so I’m less concerned with the video recording upgrades.

Thanks for the review! How many EV would you say the IBIS is better on A7RV than on A7IV based on your experience? The official specs is 8EV vs 5.5EV but we all know it won't be true coz Sony is known for barely usable IBIS.
I don't measure these things, but it's noticeably better. I was taking handheld product shots for my eBay last night, which means stopping down and increasing shutter speed a bit, and I usually take bursts. In the same settings where I'd expect about a 50% keeper rate on the A7 IV, I was getting 75% keeper rate on the A7R V. I'd say casually that it's about 2-3 times as good. I haven't experienced anything this good since I used to shoot with Olympus and their legendary IBIS.

I shoot weddings with A9ii’s and will probably only be tempted by the release of the A9iii, I think Sony owe the A9ii a decent firmware update with it being quite new, as much as the technology can handle though obviously! It’s a minefield these days choosing the right camera, so many swings, so many roundabouts! Love the screen on the A7RV though for its pixels and the flippy mechanisms!
No blackout free shooting, but as you can see in the recordings it’s very non-distracting. I will post full shooting experience video on Friday, you’ll see more of that in action!
@@smalltalk.productions9977 To me it seems noisier than what Canon cameras have - the difference is mainly in the church. That's why I shoot on silent shutter for about 40% of my wedding day, but I have to watch out for movement and indoor lighting. I'd like to see it improved - either with a slightly faster sensor (it doesn't have to be like the A9) or a quieter mechanical shutter. I have two A7RIII bodies for almost 5 years now and have taken about 200,000 photos with the mechanical shutter on both. They still work, I'll see if I replace them now with the quieter A7RV or wait for the next generation of cheaper A7V.
Hey! I have the a7III Should I go for a7 iv or a7 Rv? I am an hybrid shooter but the Rv is pretty good with video to and as compress raw that can shoot with less mgpx if I dont need those 60megapx
I had zero problems with skin tones on any Sony camera I’ve shot - you can see the samples in the video. If you shoot raw you can tweak it to your liking
We are waiting for the same camera . A9iii with some of these features, the screen, ibis and af with a 33mp stacked sensor. Until then I’m happy with my A9, A74 and A7R3

Full uncompressed RAW is about 120-130 MB. Lossless compressed 61 MP RAW is about 80-90 MB. Lossless compressed 26 MP RAW is about 40-50 MB. Lossy compressed 61 MP RAW is about 60-70 MB. You can't do lossy compressed in 26 MP unless you have a cropped photo. I'm planning on using it mostly in lossless compressed 26 MP mode, and I find 40 MB per picture to be pretty manageable. I'll reserve 61 MP for special occasions, like group shots or landscapes.
When using the small, medium, large setting in RAW size how does that effect the APSC mode (crop)? Does the megapixel stay the same in crop mode or how does that work?
The resolution is preserved when going into APS-C mode, so if you use medium raw FF @26MP, and then you use APS-C, you still get 26MP files. Here's the official text from the Sony page: "The α7R V now supports the lossless RAW format, with three selectable pixel counts - L (60M), M (26M), and S (15M). Both M and S sizes offer the same resolution in full-frame and APS-C fields of view, for simpler post-production workflow. "
@@TomRobakCom still feel no need to upgrade from my Riii honestly. The tool doesn't do the work without a person using it. I shot professionally with cameras 20 years ago just fine.
I know what you mean! Had the exact same feeling picking up A7IV for the first time. Luckily so far after full year of usage looks almost new! A7RV feel better build for sure - you don’t get that plasticky feeling!

Gosh with this AF system and burst mode, I cant help but think: why people still shoot stills? Why not just shoot video and just extract the frames from the video?
I don’t think they crippled this body at all. They’ve literally put everything they could in it, and the only drawbacks feel like technical limitations of this sensor
On holidays in Hong Kong at the moment and literally picked this camera up from a well known retailer for half the price i can buy in Eu. Unfortunately I didn’t bring a lens with me so I’ll just have to admire the camera body for now ;)
