In the olden days the grain mill was most often the “Heart” of a community. Here at Metcalf Mills our goal is not only the preservation and education of the grain milling process, but also to help provide a service and products that help make good, healthy, fresh milled goods more available to individuals and communities. And hopefully bring back some of that “Heart” and maybe a little more Love.

The video is really good Justin! We look forward to watching your content. The video quality continues to get better and you have the best music. I would like to ask that you consider keeping the music volume at the same level as the voice volume or a little lower. I appreciate that you don't have music playing while you are talking. Other content creators do that and it becomes difficult to understand what is being said. We hope you are all doing well. The spring time is full of excitement and of course many chores. God bless you all.

Wow Justro , that is an intense labor of love work that you do . When you build your mills , do you have to totally cut & dress each individual blank round of stone ?
@metcalfmills5679
@metcalfmills5679 Год назад
Thank you Sherry. Yes from a blank. But I have air and electric tools so that all the work does not require being done with a hammer.

I really liked this video, it tells alot. With regular use of a mill, how often does it require dressing? Could you use something like a pneumatic needle scaler to save your hands a bit? Thanks again for the video Justro
@metcalfmills5679
@metcalfmills5679 Год назад
Glad you enjoy. It depends on a lot of variables, once a month, once a year. It is important to remember it takes much longer to touch up stones than to correct them when they have been neglected. You can use a pneumatic dressing hammer for some of the rough work, more on that later. Thank you!
@DaveHorne-su9fu
@DaveHorne-su9fu Год назад
Requires a lot of patience. I was wondering if I would be able to dress my stones if they need to be done with carpel tunnel? I do a lot of woodworking and repetitive hand sanding, and even holding and painting with a brush for 10 min or so and my fingers are numb.

The seed catalogs ads are following me on you tube, they know what time of year it is :D Whew that rubbing is a hard sound to hear :D Thanks for taking us along Justro, I'm learning with every episode. I've got you on one screen and old1920's Meadows and Woods manuals open on the other while watching. It's great to see what I'm reading. Thank you! Mine was freshly dressed when I got it, but I know I'll have to learn dressing. You might want to show the hammer faces in the next video and hopefully into the furrows. Is there a reason to use the hammer vs the air tool? I was told one thing to use is concentrated kool aid for the red since it is food grade, what are you using? I've made more progress on the "Have grits will travel" truck. Then brakes on the truck and a visit to the health department for their blessing, that'll be a big one. Hopefully in time to make the farmers markets this year. Keep up the good work! Oh, roosters. I knew it was his time when my wife appeared with a trash can lid for a shield, handed me an Old Hickory and said "He's gotta go" :D
@metcalfmills5679
@metcalfmills5679 Год назад
To me the hammer is more accurate and can do more precise work. Some people use air tools to finish but I don’t. They are good for roughing out. I use food coloring. Hope all goes well with your project, thank you!

How many bushels between dressings? I was wondering about the old water powered mills with large stones how did they check the contact (test run)?
@metcalfmills5679
@metcalfmills5679 Год назад
It depends on many variables. There will be more on that as we go. They used a proof and paint staff, I will have more on that later as well. Thank you for the good questions
@walterlang151
@walterlang151 Год назад
Fascinating to watch your process! I understand that you are knocking off the high points, but I'm puzzled as to why the wheels don't grind each other flat, knocking off the high points, as they spin? (Along the lines of how the red is knocked off of the high points) Are some areas of the two stones harder or denser than others?
@metcalfmills5679
@metcalfmills5679 Год назад
Hey Walter, hope you are doing well. The dress allows the stones to be as close together as possible without touching, to get the finest grind possible. They are never supposed to touch when milling grain. Thanks Walter
@walterlang151
@walterlang151 Год назад
@@metcalfmills5679 Thanks, that helped me understand. I think that also likely explains why the threaded portion of the bolts was short when you began .... the stones had worn down and were not as thick as when the mill was new. The wider (unworn) original stones would not have needed as much thread on the bolts to draw the two stones closer together.
@DustySplinters
@DustySplinters Год назад
Justin, do you think the wood dried out a bit making the threads too short?
@metcalfmills5679
@metcalfmills5679 Год назад
Could be but it was only a little over a nuts worth of threads…unless they bradded the wrong end..
@miker258
@miker258 Год назад
Why not just put washers on the back side to pull the bolts back some?
