Fun Fact: Slappy Laszlo is based on Peter Lorre, birthname Laszlo Lowenstein, an icon of old cinema! He's also been made into cartoon parodies by the looney tunes, like a lot. I'll never get tired of people imitating his dreamy voice tbh.
Not to be that guy but because Alex Bale dived more into his own horror story with the lore videos (which slowly just became horror films) you TECHNICALLY can do a spongebob lore video with your own thoughts. The films were good tho.
This is really making me realize how lovingly crafted the original show was. It was lightning in a bottle. Also, I fully agree that patrick was always a jerk. but he was also carefully utilized. even then, there were moments where I couldn't stand him even in the older episodes. Case and point, I'm with stupid.
In my opinion, it was cute when Bubble Buddy got a sequel and Frankendoodle getting a sequel was welcome. But now that we have the sequel to Idiot Box, and one-off characters like Nosferatu have become a recurring gag, it's getting a bit ridiculous. What's next, a sequel to Squeaky Boots?
The sequel to 'Idiot Box' makes sense since this year marks 25 years of SpongeBob and they're meant to be celebratory. Some other episodes we'll get sequels to are 'Plankton's Army' and 'SB-129'
"My Leg!" was a cute meta-tribute to the show, I think. I wouldn't mind a repeat cameo of Handsome Squidward, given that he only appeared for like 1.5 seconds in the episode.
Modern Spongebob just feels so forced most of the time, like the executives want it to appeal to 8 and 30 year olds simultaneously. Its a shame, you can tell they have some really strong talent behind the scenes.
It’s not forced different audiences just have different senses of humor You don’t see the 9 year olds complaining What’s wrong with wanting to appeal to both?
I never once felt it was forced, I think you all just look at the first few seasons through rose colored glasses, due to nostalgia factor, and the fact that back then they had more intricate ideas for their episodes, obviously as a show goes on for so long, it’s gonna get a bit repetitive. I think what y’all are really upset abt is the repetitiveness.
@@madnessarcade7447 there is nothing wrong with it, the show in its first seasons also did that in some way or another. In my opinion the problem is that they keep pushing it as a "Remember this???" factor instead of making something interesting with it (such as doodle-bob's return episode)
21:52 Fun fact: The actor for the Chief is Martin Olson, a former staff writer for the show and father of Olivia Olson, voice actress for Marceline and Vanessa Doofenshmirtz
What made Nosferatu funny in his first appearance was that it was out of nowhere, brief and was never mentioned again. Anything else was just them going 'Hey, remember this thing we did?'
Initially, there was going to be a guy who like lived under the floorboards of the Krusty Krab that was teased earlier in the episode when SpongeBob brings him his mail. The punchline was that he was going to be the one turning the lights on and off. The Nosferatu bit was added very late in the game
Doodlebob was legitimately in my nightmares as a 3-4 year old and I was sobbing after first watching the episode and couldn’t watch Nickelodeon for a long time for fear that the episode could come on
Cool, mine was nosferatu showing up at the end of the hash slinging slasher episode. I didn't know who he was bc i was like, 6 years old but that weird smile they photoshopped onto his face absolutely rocked my shit Oh yea and also the promos for that one episode with the aliens who hate mayonnaise, didn't watch that episode until i was like, 8
When you compare newer to old SpongeBob, it’s insane to see how much has changed. What made the older seasons so much fun was how simple and well-timed the jokes were. Which is why I love the Doodlebob episode is such a masterpiece of comedy. It’s just hilariously well done. The newer episodes feel too rushed and bright. It’s like every second there’s a new joke that feels forced and exaggerated. It just doesn’t feel right. The characters feel too one-note and the jokes aren’t as funny as they used to be. But I will admit, they do have some good moments like The Bulletin Board episode
I still love that the outfit that bubblebass wears on the BB review show is a clear homage to the nostalgia critic. (doug himself even made a tweet acknowledging it. Where he called up the angry video game nerd and said “SpongeBob doesn’t love you”)
I still personally believe that Seasons 1-3 and the first movie are a separate timeline. Otherwise, it’s painfully difficult to justify changes in future seasons and films. I still love the sponge, but boy does it hurt my brain trying to plan the timeline.
Does the timeline really matter? Sure, I'm not satisfied with many retcons either, but I don't think creators bothered with continuity. There were moments where everything seemed like a doomed finale yet it was reset the next episode.
@@ashesGeekthat's what I'm thinking, for example the time bikini bottom was in shambles to the point the residents of bikini bottom had to evacuate over a butterfly but than in the next episode everything's okay and life goes on as normal
6:23 makes sense shows change as their audience does because they wanna appeal to the new demographic which has a different sense of humor than the old fans did It’s a new style for a new audience
A common reason I see as to why parents steered their kids away from SpongeBob is because they thought SpongeBob would make their kid “stupid”. Which isn’t true for literally the majority of people who’ve watched the show lmao
@@iknowwhatyouare102 I had the same problem with like, Mr Bean. My parents wouldn’t let me watch Mr Bean because they were scared that I would try to imitate some of the stuff he did.
Funny thing is that I knew and heard of spongebob as a kid but when I asked if I could watch it I wasn't allowed. Although during daycare I remember going to the movie theater with the rest of the group to see the 2015 movie since my mom didn't know what movie we were seeing.
To think SpongeBob’s 25th anniversary is this year… anyways, I don’t mind the newer episodes referencing older ones, it depends on how they’re executed, and I like how the show does this. I like the “My Leg” episode as it focuses on one of the funny gags in the show. Yet the upcoming episode, Squidiot Box, had controversy due to it retconning and missing the point of the Idiot Box episode that we all knew for about 22 years. It also meant to celebrate the 25th anniversary in a humbling way. Which is subjective, but good that you liked the episode.
I think Doodle DImension would have had a better concept... without the dimension angle. Like maybe Doodlebob, bored of being forgotten in the picture on the wall with nothing to do, wishing Spongebob had drawn him some company, goes out to find it. He could maybe find a version of Squidward from one of his paintings, maybe a doodle of Sandy from some of her blueprints, and it could have been interesting to see their different artstyles and how they play into how the characters move, and how they fight when they inevitably get caught by the originals. It could have even had a similarly touching ending to the original where they're all ultimately caught on a canvas together and get to remain friends in their new home so they're not so lonely.
I think a lot of the newer SpongeBob stuff is more well received is cause maybe newer writers are working on the show grew up with the show and writing how they remembered it to be and what they enjoyed.
Its fun to imagine that scenario especially with the censored creepypasta homage they did fairly recently. Creepy scene yet somewhat sentimental for me because it all comes full circle lol
I wouldn't say they're awful, just might be taking a bit too much from the original 3 seasons. Definitely far better than like season 6, but would like for them to use their creativity for new things in the same light as the older stuff. Not terrible but would like to see more
Ngl newer SpongeBob constantly relying on referencing and following up stuff in older seasons is sad. I get it’ll never reach the heights of the first three seasons no matter how good recent seasons become, but to get to that point of desperation shows how thin the writing staff has been run. They don’t feel like jokes they wanted to make rather higher ups trying to keep that relevancy as much as possible. Even more sad since the animation team showed how creative they could get with set designs and all.
Your opinion is valid I viewed it more as the writers growing up with old school spongebob like me (especially from the little behind the scenes stuff I’ve seen)
Having the bulletin board represent social media and how negative comments can really hit us way too hard really shows the timelessness of the first Bubble Bass episode since that same message is shown there but without the direct social media comparison, just the idea that negative comments can bring us down heavily. 30:33 Oh THAT'S what that meant, now I get it! zomg yeah of course the dirty bubble would be related to bubble buddy so clever
Not to mention the characters were way more reasonable in Pickles, whereas even though the "culprit" in the bulletin board is completely obvious everyone else is way too stupid to connect the dots.
I wasn't actually being entirely negative on the new one but it IS a bit harder to argue its existence when a superior version of it already existed lol. I was like "Oh I should say something to note that I'm not exactly saying the new episode is lacking purpose... Though, then again, it kind of is now that I think about it"@@twindrill2852
Random spongebob fact :D Spongebob was born on July 14, 1986, making him 12 turning 13 in the first episode and currently in 2024 37 turning 38 I have nowhere else to share this, so I'm sharing it here. Enjoy.
It doesn't feel right hime being 13 in the first episode The whole show hints that they're super old friends, that seemed to have drifted apart? No way was that just in his childhood
@LycanMOON Well, idk how the timeline of spongebob works, but if the first episode takes place in the same time it was released in 1999, then that means spongebob is a kid. The only way for spongebob to be an adult is that the first episode would have to take place in 2023 or just in the future.
For some reason, I get the feeling Athena would really enjoy watching the Spongebob musical? The energy really encapsulates how Spongebob looks and feels, and the costumes and music are amazing!
The only characters I want them to bring back is Squilliam Fancyson (even though the showrunners said they have no plans on bringing him back) because his bickering with Squidward was hella funny and Stanley, Spongebob's taller cousin, I thought he was hella cute when I was a kid. He was so nervous and awkward, I felt so bad that he kept blowing stuff up accidentally because he genuinely wanted to find something that suited him for work and he just happens to be a victim of circumstance. Maybe he could take up photography since that was the only that seemed to not be affected by his presence. Ngl I kinda want them to bring back Blackjack too because the twist with him is so funny and he'd have the funniest beef with Plankton. Imagine Squidward giving Spongebob problems and Spongebob brings up his cousin Blackjack in conversation since he's visiting again, Squidward then gets worried that if he isn't nice Sponge that Blackjack will beat him up, funny antics ensue, Blackjack finally visits Sponge's place of work, Squid gets hella scared and thinks he's done for until he notices Blackjack is literally the size of Plankton.
To expand on your point, Nosferatu has only recently started to become a word that's synonymous with the word "vampire." The actual origin to where the word came from is actually unclear, with there being many proposed ideas on the origin of the word. According to an interview with Polygon, the guy who created the original Nosferatu gag in SpongeBob (Jay Lender) chose to call him Nosferatu instead of Count Orlok because it is a more recognizable name and because it sounded better given the tone the characters would say his name at the end of the episode.
@margotnohe973 Thank you for clearing that up. I'm glad to interact with another fan of old, monster movies, and thanks for clearing up my use of grammar. You're a cool person bro.
The Chief is played by frequent SpongeBob & Phineas and Ferb writer Martin Olsen. He's the voice of Marceline's dad in Adventure Time. He's her dad irl too! Olivia Olson's dad!
Jokes themselves , context, and timing all go hand n hand. The jokes definitely won’t have the same kind of impact as the older versions, but they might still be funny to some people
I kinda like how they bring in previous characters from time to time now. Because it makes the world of Spongebob feel lively. What I don't like is that they bring those characters back but not the continuity. Kinda defeats the purpose and feels like they're just doing it for viewer nostalgia
13:06 The pirate painting is my childhood nightmare. I actually saw another Super Bowl commercial with him in it, I think it also had Dora the Explorer too. Also him jumping out of the painting will always be nightmare fuel that and his stop motion intro.
FINALLY SOMEONE WHO AGREES THAT HES TERRIFYING. I hate that they keep advertising him. The stop motion is way less creepy imo but still kinda unnerving (but I like Cee Lo Green’s voice better). I think part of the reason the stop motion pirate is unnerving is because the original one traumatized me too much (same thing goes for the actual theme song, the CeeLo Green version is probably in my top 5 Nicktoons theme songs, but the original traumatized me too much for me to put it higher. The main reason I hate the original intro is the pirate, the instrumental and animation (except for the pirate obviously) is really good (but as much as I like the original visuals, I kinda like the stop motion ones more). Sorry for the rant tho.
The episode of The Patrick Star Show with Bubble Bass dressed as the Nostalgia Critic is not a coincidence someone who wrote the episode had to have watched Channel Awesome once.
I always thought the Nosferatu bit was hilarious. I had no idea he had more than one appearance. Also, in college I took a vampire class where we got to watch Nosferatu (the actual movie) and every time he came on screen I thought of SpongeBob. As a kid I had no frame of reference for him, but now as an adult I love his inclusion even more because it's so random.
Spongebob has always been that thing that me and my dad get along with. Even now as an adult, we both still watch early seasons and make references. Like if i say "dad you want chocolate?" He screams "CHOCOLATE?!?!" Its just great lol 😂
I grew up with modern Spongebob and stopped watching in 2016-2017, it feels nice for these more modern episodes to be appreciated as I loved them as a kid along with the older ones as they were always on rerun. Me and my sister used to run to our house to catch the new episodes I had recorded and watch the new ones. Thanks for the walk down memory lane!
Funny thing sbout Nosferatu, he was a blatent dracula ripoff and his movie was made before Dracula went Public domain. After losing all the money in profits in a lawsuit the character was also put into the public domain BEFORE Dracula. So Spongebob using the character with photopuppetry ripped right out his movie is just amazing
I honestly find it odd how Spongebob has been episodic all of these years until halfway through season 9. Like it doesn't feel right at all they decide to change the rules out of nowhere. For example they treated Mr. Krabs and Mrs. Puff as not being a thing and even had an episode where Mr. Krabs acted like he never had any interest in her. But suddenly they're dating again I guess?
Bubble Bass actually returned in Season 8’s “Plankton’s Good Eye” in a minor role. Specifically, Plankton catches him after BB jumps from a burning building.
26:19 I’m excited for that. I love The Patrick Star Show’s chaotic energy that somehow manages to stand out against even modern SB. The first couple of segments aren’t the best, but the show really improves at “The Patterfly Effect”, where (fun fact) they got an entirely new crew for the show. The following episodes are some of the best episodes the franchise has seen in years, especially Bubble Bass Reviews and Season 2 as a whole.
it's definitely not as bad as people think. it's not like seasons 1-3 were somehow peak comedy and the later ones aren't. it's always been a silly show, even during its so called golden era.
6:23 makes sense shows change as their audience does because they wanna appeal to the new demographic which has a different sense of humor than the old fans did It’s a new style for a new audience
last time i checked, they are constantly doing reruns of their most iconic season one to three episodes. i was born in 2007, and literally every spongebob episode i can remember is from that era.
It's not as old as the other bring backs the show's doing, but I've always wanted a sequel to the episode where Patrick writes a song and the Bikini Bottomites throw a riot about it.
25:05 I'm sure you already know this, or have heard it from plenty of others, but just in case, this depiction of Bubble Bass is supposed to be a parody of The Nostalgia Critic. I mean, it's a parody of all internet review shows, but The Nostalgia Critic is the biggest inspiration.
I think Bubble Bass not being caught was because being shamed was punishment enough I only just started watching your videos a few days ago and I've been enjoying your humor and content! Your art skills are lovely, too!
Oh boy, I heavily relate to the whole letting other people's opinions dictate mine. There were a couple things in the past few years I didn't watch because people kept saying they were bad. But in 2020 and 2021 I checked out some movies that people kept complaining were bad and most of them were either decent or really good. After a while I stopped letting people online try to shape my opinions on something I hadn't even watched.
Ever since I saw you reference Team Starkid's Hatchetfield, I keep thinking how much that entire series needs a lore video. I know it's not a kids show but someone has to do it. 😭
The thing about modern SpongeBob is that the animation style is so weird. It’s very much giving ren & stimpy in that they’re all hyper expressive and gummy now and I’m just not a fan of it.
Ok the Bubble Bass Review Show is literally just the Nostalga Critic, and Nosferatu was originally from the 1922 movie, however I think they made a costume for the later episodes. Also youre so brave and slay girl boss for watching The Patrick Show.
They really needed to obey the original creators wish of ending the show when he passed. It had a long run already it would’ve naturally gotten to the place that shows get to when they’ve run for too long. They have gotten to that and also disrespected the creators wish
I agree but that’s on the network. Nickelodeon is very disrespectful when it comes to their creators. I don’t want to blame the writers and animators because I think they are trying their best to honor the original while also having a job
@@AthenaPOfficial The writers and animators are doing the best they can. This video showed that there is still some passion in the show. I feel like there was a year or few where the passion wasn’t clear. That could’ve been the ppl trying to figure out what to do. Ya it’s definitely way more on the network than the ppl making the show
I feel like Doodle Dimension could have worked if they took the approach of the doodle dimension being the 2nd dimension instead, composed of drawings, written word, etc, with them eventually ending up on the page on Spongebob's wall with Doodlebob in it, which allows him to escape using Sandy's portal. He wreaks havoc again, and Spongebob gets the idea to have Sandy use her portal to obtain a live-action pencil to combat him. He can still steal the pencil and create evil copies, even still have the same resolution, but still, anything besides a glorified cameo in a white void
After a good few years of weird and disturbing mediocrity, going this route seemed to make sense if they’re trying to recapture the spirit of the first few seasons.
The bubble bass sequel made me explain to my 5 year old that when the episodes they choose have the “lines on the side” (4:3) it means it’s from when mommy was little, which is why I knew who bubble bass was. More often than not my son chooses an older season “with the lines” than not if that tells you anything. He also likes the Patrick show and Camp Coral though… He’s also noticed the coloration differences and gets mad that they changed Gary’s slime color over the years
i was about to be sad over the patrick show slander because it's actually cool how creative what the showrunners are doing with it exploring different art styles and the like (plus spongebob's design in it is SO cute to me) but then the bit of you reacting to spongebob's killcount in bubbletown knocked me from laughing lolol more ppl need to talk about how fucked that scene was!!!
I saw that eel lady from the shoe tying episode return as a background/foreground character in a more modern episode a little while ago, don't know how many other times she appeared, but there's at least 2 appearances of her in the series
Honestly I love that you had a great time with newer SpongeBob. Shit gets wild with it and tbh I need a The Patrick Show lore video just to see someone deconstruct the madness.
