I've been upgrading my old machines with new SSDs lately. Here are my thoughts on moving to SSD's and some tips to make it smooth for you. The featured drive is the 256GB SP A55.

SSD CARE AND FEEDING IN UBUNTU OR LINUX MINT
NOTES ON UPGRADING TO AN SSD:
It is tempting to use a utility like the dd command or CloneZilla to transfer all data from a HDD to a new SSD. DON’T DO IT! You should backup your personal data and re-install the OS to the new SSD. Gparted or the Ubiquity Installer will format SSD’s with the proper partition alignment and optimize the file system (ext4) for the best performance. You may get less than optimal performance if you just clone the old drive to the new SSD.
SSD CHECK:
cat /sys/block/sd(x)/queue/rotational
(x) = driver letter
ALIGNMENT CHECK:
parted /dev/sd(x)
align-check opt (n)
(x) = drive letter.
(n) = partition number.
Proper alignment avoids excessive read-modify-write cycles.
TRIM
The TRIM command enables an operating system to notify the SSD of pages which no longer contain valid data. This prevents unnecessary overwrite operations which can reduce SSD performance and increase wear. Ubuntu/Linux Mint do this automatically, once weekly. Once per week is enough! Running fstrim excessively can contribute to SSD wear. Let the system handle it for you. There is no need to add the "discard" option to any fstab entry. TRIM is applied to a swap partition on the SSD at boot time.
sudo fstrim -v --all

I work for a charity supporting disabled people with IT. We get given old machines which we refugish to give away. |The most dramatic example I can offer was an old IBM Thinkpad. Maxing out the ram made a noticeable difference but fitting an SSD made a massive difference. That is now our standard, loading Linux Mint Xfce, very few problems other than the occasional printer not being supported in Linux (most are).

. I upgraded my ACER Travelmate with a Toshiba SSD about 5 years ago, and noticed an instant performance improvement.. It's a twelve year old laptop, and still my daily driver, now running Linux Mint 21. . I use a "SATA-to-USB Cable" to transfer data from my removed drive (SSD or LaptopHDD) onto the newly installed SSD. It saves the step of backing up data first. . SATA-to-USB Cables are less than $5.00.

Awesome to see you doing another Linux vid again! But I also like the hifi vids since this is my second hobby. Way back you were the one who brought me to Linux! Thank you very much for that!👍 After disto hopping quite a bit in the past, I am now running Manjaro here with KDE. I have a LOT of machines all of them are older. The oldest one a DELL xps laptop with a c2d and 4 gigs of ram that I use for work for some client tasks. Newest one is a DELL xeon workstation with 64 gig ram. So yes keep these old pc's running. 👍

On two occasions I have swapped out the HHDs with SSDs (I use Sansung EVO) in unsupported Imacs afterwich I installed Linux Mint - Mint looks and runs fabulously on the old Imacs (1 x mid 2008 and 1 x mid 2011). One was set-up for Audio, the other for graphics. These older unsupported Imacs don't cost a lot and can easily be repurposed / rebirthed with linux. Have a great 2023 Joe 🙂 PS I used the fabulous Newertech Adapta Drive 3.5" to 2.5" bracket - which came with all required screws - super easy.

Used two SSD's one on my old laptop with not only faster boot and run times but lower battery usage ( Almost 2X longer ). On my desktop I put a 256g SSD as a boot and swap ( it boots faster too) and a 1TB for my /home. With 8g little swap is used anyway. System updates don't cause much wear on root and the spinning drive has all the room I need. So nice to see you back btw. Reply

I worked in a used computer store where we sold used computers, new & used software, old & new hardware, and the occasional computer repair back in the early 90s. We got in some of the latest and largest hard drives. People were waiting in line to get a chance to buy one for $1000.00 dollars. They were one gigabyte drives made by Western Digital. 🤣🤣

Thanks, Joe! Some brands are more reliable. Samsung being one. Others are usually fine though. They aren't all the same. You get what you pay for. I've used Adata, Kingston, Samsung and a few more. Only one stopped working it was Visiontek. The company wouldn't help at all either. Don't be afraid to go for older units especially if your computer is older. If its not running sata 3 then grab a old Intel. I dual boot Windows 10 & 11 with several Linux distros. My research has shown that they last well over ten years and that's from heavy use. Try and buy 256gb or larger.

Good to see what you can do with a core 2 duo, Got a couple laying around here that I could really get back up an running again. One device that I think is probably going to have to be recycled is my old Atom based Samsung NC10 netbook. The move away from providing 32bit spins of an OS has pretty much been the nail in the coffin of that device. They only one that I have found was any good was the 32bit version of raspian for x86.

My first SSD purchase was in 2015 for a new build. I paid $150 for a 128gb ssd! Later on, the price went down to $40 each and I bought several to put different Linux distros on to play with. I had a dock in the box to plug in from the outside. I still use them. That first SSD went bad after a short period of time, but it was replaced under warranty. Otherwise never had problems with them. The prices now are amazing!

You were talking about moms' Optiplex. Well, I have one as my daily driver. A 2013 i5-4570 4-core 8G with Mint-Mate. I put a pci card in to house a Sabrent nvme module. I updated the bios be able to start from the nvme. It's blazing fast (10 Gb/s copying between 2 partitions). The only minus is, is that Sabrent doesn't show smart data in the disks application. It takes 15 seconds from the power button up to completely booted. As we aren't gamers, we'll keep it till it eventually gives up. Or win the lottery.

I had 2 SSDs fail on me, one (64GB) I got it for free from a guy who had run it since windows vista as a media server, and it was run without a case while I had it. The 2nd one was from a laptop I got 2nd hand that failed recently, though it was a dell OEM ssd (250gb) from before 2015. In both cases its more than understandable. Funy enough the 250GB one didn't completely fail out, but the smart data was able to tell me that I had a TON of bad sectors. So even though the OS failed to re-install (I thought it was a software issue) I was able to get what few files I had on it back.

Old Network/System Admin here.... Good video Joe!!! I would like to add.... (1) SSD is the 1st and cheapest way to refurb old systems. (2) More RAM (new or used) if you can afford it. And... (3) Newer GPU (new or used) if you can afford it. I'm always trying to get the best performance out any hardware I own. There is one more thing you can do to boost performance on 2GB RAM systems only: SWAP COMPRESSION. This helps a lot if you have a minimum of a 4-core/4-threaded CPU. I do not recommend this on 2-core/threaded system!!! The benefits of compression disappear when there is not enough CPU power to run the system efficiently.
@jonspoonamore3721
@jonspoonamore3721 Год назад
Another big benefit to using SSD's in laptops.... You don't have to worry anymore about being rough with your laptop. Remember.... SSD's have no moving parts. A sudden harsh move can damage a standard spinning drive while it is turned on.

I had to replace old spinny drive because it decided to quit. 99C temp confused me a bit at the start too. I hope it last thou, poor laptop runs almost 24/7, mostly used for internet and as music player. Occasional Minecraft. Nice vid. Cheers !

I honestly find a bit 'lame' when people call Gnome/ KDE etc etc memory hog. Most laptops today come with 8 Gigs or more of RAM. It is not the old days when you had to work with 1 or 2 Gigs of RAM (at max). And honestly, what is the precent of users who need all those 8 Gigs of RAM for work ? My guess is less than 0.01% ! SSDs has really got cheap, bought a 500GB Crucial BX500 for around INR 2700 ($1 = INR 82, I think) for a 2011 laptop I had (Compaq CQ43 - Dual core, not even C2D) and this is the best upgrade for hardware IMHO.

I've got an A9 single core (dual threaded!) with 6GB of memory that's running Linux. Once I replaced the drive in it with an SSD, it took it from about 3-5 minutes (old spinning drive) to about 20-30 seconds (a new SSD).

I feel certain you know this, but throwing it out there for people who might not... if you run the remote apps with stdout and stderr redirection you won't see those error messages. Something like "nautilus > /dev/null 2>&1 &" will redirect stdout and stderr to the null device. I do this with certain apps for logging purposes, just redirect output to a file instead.

Hi Joe. I'm abit concerned on totally relying on ssd's as I bought a Kingston 240 GB unit for my HP Elite book, and it died within 9 months and am kinda leaning back to the old spinning hard drives - but now they are becoming a bit hard to find, other than Samsung - what other name brands have a good reputation for longevity , and yes it was running Linux mint. Could you do a video on some recommendations - as always your videos are a pleasure to listen to and learn from. Thank's
@EzeeLinux
@EzeeLinux Год назад
As I mentioned in this vid, I have only ever had one fail. SanDisk and Samsung are the brands I've run the most. No issues to report. It takes a while to fiure out longevity for any brand name. Premature failure is not just for SSD's Over the last 40 years, I've seen many "new" spinning drives die unexpectedly. It's always a gamble so make sure you back you data up often. :)

I too run a Dell Optiplex which wax bought as a reconditioned system from Amazon. Personally, I really like the system but would advise people to do their research before parting with any money. The system I got was great and is still running but, I bought another one for a family member and the reconditioning job on that was an utter disgrace. The seller didn't change the CMOS battery and jammed a laptop 2.5inch drive into a 3.5inch Bay. The listing showed the specs correctly but didn't say which model of Optiplex they were shipping. I'm guessing that way they can ship whatever trash they have without having to justify the age of the hardware. Refurbished systems make great linux boxes but I'd urge people to find a reputable company or knowledgeable person to help them get a good deal.

my 128g Kingston SSD and my old HP workstation 3.2ghz and 8g ram desktop + Kubuntu and ROSA Linux = SMOKIN fast!!!!!! The entire boot is about 5 seconds.. I will say though that IF you partition an SSD and overwrite data (new partition write over existing partition ) the odds of recovering it are remote vs HDD with magnetic disk,,, Yea.. i learned that recently.. Testdisk did not work.. nor any other program.. all the info went poof.. It was my error installing ROSA for the first time.. but I am digressing..
