Lately Ive been mixing songs for recording artist Matt Freedman. Matt's been having instrument tracks recorded in Nashville and sent up here to PA where we've been recording his vocals and mixing. depending on which producer was used some of the songs arrive with a lot of tracks.
This has left me wanting more channels of Analog mixing. So I ordered an SSL X Desk which has a total of 20 inputs in a very compact footprint.
Update: i've had the desk for a while now and I really like it. I've been dedicating it as a drum sub mixer. I am able to do a custom mix for parallel compression using the stereo cue send - returning on FX Stereo return 1, and a stereo reverb on Aux sends 1/2 - returning on FX stereo return 2. The whole thing then gets sent to the dedicated "Summing input" on my API BOX 2 master channel. I have 8x 500 series EQs normalled in the patchbay to the 8 channels on the X-Desk so all i have to do to engage them is hit the insert button on the desk. But because its all on the bay its easy to patch in a compressor or use the EQs for something else.

Thanks for the stellar info. Was looking at the big 6 but I already have plenty of 500 series pre’s etc. just picked up a pristine X-Desk off of Reverb. You’re video made it an easy choice of which way to go for my setup.

Hey HP, the X Desk is a little beast ! You'll be surprised on what this little fella can do. The "Mix Level" is your master "Fader", not the dry/wet insert. The "Sum" switch beneath the insert, sums the insert returns & the main mix. If you get the "X-Desk Link out" into a patchbay, you'll have "multed", mix bus, cue bus, FX send and AFL bus. That's where parallel processing can be really really interesting (if you have second summing mixer or extra AD I/O's), without sacrificing the FX returns or Alt inputs or the Cue sends.

Yeah correct. Mix Level is just another gain stage prior to the insert and sum button. Best way to properly understand the xdesk is the block diagram: solid-state-logic.co.jp/docs/X-Desk_Block_Diagram.pdf

X-Desk and X-Panda are great. Can be driven, have signal LEDs, direct outs, AUX, good overall quality. The market just didn't understand that such analog gear is better than useless tech gadgets,

Yep, you sound like you have a plan, I had no plan or better yet, my supposed plan turned out to be a frustrating confused mental meltdown trying to figure the xdesk out, I did buy the. Rack expansion modules and spent a small fortune on momgomi Dsub cables along with many calls and emails back and forth with SSL tech support. I ended up putting it all on hold due to work, health and family issues for several years. I am in the slow process of reconfiguring my home project studio. I Never worked on large mixers with all the associated routing options…but I am slowly figuring it out.

Aw sorry to hear about the trouble. it is great gear so when you do get things squared away you should enjoy it. i'm in the middle of my second mix with it now and it's definitely high quality sound. personally, I would sell the mogami. You can get hand soldered snakes from Trace Audio for 1/3 the price. Mogami prices are nuts

About the Insert button under the master mix level. If you push the button beneath it, you can do the Parallel compression. Once they’re both punch in, you can control the level of them separately. Hope it make sense

How come all the faders on the console are so low? Thanks. Personally, I'd bring the sends from both consoles up to a patch bay. Then, you could multi the auxes if you wanted to "link" them at times.

The sends are on the bay. I don't know why the faders were low on that particular mix but they're not on the one I'm doing now. I had literally just plugged the thing in when i made this video.

i'm always very happy to learn something new, but the way a mult works is you duplicate outputs. I don't know of any way to send multiple signals to one input on a patchbay. And the bays I'm using are db25 on the back, so I can't really change the wiring. if it was important to me, I could use the mixer on the lynx (it would involve an extra conversion), instead, I'm just taking advantage of the fact that they're separate. More sends.

everyone has to find their own solutions. Maybe someday I will make that jump, but in the meantime, I found I was able to combine a solution from two competing companies to get what I needed. what's very satisfying is after a number of years to stand back and look at the studio that you designed for your needs and see that it's your unique solution .

the big six has a lot of processing and converters included. if you need that its a good deal i guess. i haven't used it but i suspect the overall sonics in the xdesk are probably a little better. just reacting to how much they crammed into the big six for the price.

on the x desk - are the mix outputs (dsub female to xlr?) or is it xlr to xlr via the speakers outputs? just trying to understand it.

the mix outs are on a dsub with all the outputs for the center section (insert & FX sends). the speaker and alt speaker outputs are the only XLR outputs.

The main outs are on a dsub connection (8 channels) along with the insert sends and the FX sends. plug Any kind of snake you want into it, as long as one end is dsub. The speaker outputs are on individual XLRs. You can Google the manual and there'll be a drawing and it will also tell you exactly which is on what output.
