Congrats! That's a big move for the future. Have you thought about spray foam the sheetmetal structure. It would dampen the metal and create a good thermal barrier. Then frame a traditional wood framed wall as a sound barrier and integrated acoustic design.

New studio is looking great man! Congrats 🎉 I’ve been working on a open concept for a couple of years since I got into recording mixing and producing, and it’s the best thing ever, I’m never going back. My studio is very similar in structure, but way smaller. My humble recommendation would be to invest as much as you can on acoustic isolation because in my experience metal is not a barrier for low frequencies even with some isolation. An air gap inbetween the inner wall and outer wall will work but might not be enough. Anyway, I’d personally love to see the step by step process from now on!! Since I’m planning to move and build another bigger/better space. Good luck!!

I'm a composer and professional singer, not a pro engineer, but I'm building a studio building myself. The project has gotten a bit long in the tooth and I've somewhat run out of steam, but I work every day and I've got youtube running in my in-ears while working for comfort. After nine other random but great videos from you had played, this one pops up. It made me feel less alone and feel some kinship with you 😊 Good luck and don't forget to grab hold of that work enthusiasm when it visits. And when you feel that enthusiasm DON'T LET GO OF IT! Edit: There's lots of videos I'd like to see from you, but I should get on with the outdoor insulation. I'll try and remember to get back to you. Edit2: Video ideas: 1. When you build something like this from the ground up, what are the advantages you can leverage, apart from acoustics such as designing for a good bass response from the ground up? 2. (In case your're planning to be hands on with this) studio cabling and lighting. I personally don't even know whom to ask. The electricians here in Austria are very competent, but they don't know the first thing about what to consider when wiring for audio 3. Nothing to do with the studio, but I'm currently obsessed with this after hearing some examples: making/using old-school carbon microphones creatively 4. How to buy a studio drum-set when you're not a drummer 5. How to let your kids visit you in your studio without endangering your gear 😅

Very very cool! That indeed looks like a great open table for opportunities. Biggest questions in my mind at first start to circle around insulation, ventilation, effects of inside/outside temperature differences and possible moisture build up inside the structure because of that. And after that, soundproofing.

I bought a metal 18x36 building - still slowly doing stuff to it. . . I paid 6 k for it - 10 ft walls on the side. Spray foam the ceiling (closed cell) minimum. The metal sweats - and even reflective double bouble won't prevent a leak if the nylon around the screws go bad. . . My plan for mine - spray foam the top - use double bouble reflective insulation (be sure to have strips to keep it an inch off the walls - Amazon sells reflective insulation that has a closed cell foam core. Then - 2x6 walls off set - filled with earth wool.

Hey Ryan, love your videos. I’m really curious to see your progress. I’ve built a studio behind my house (or rather, turned a cinderblock garage into a studio) that’s about 24 x 14 I think. Instead of having additional walls built, I used combinations of spray foam, an air gap, and kinetics isolation hooks. Even though I felt I went to great lengths, it just isn’t isolated enough. And, hilariously, my neighbor got a rooster that’s next to it. So if I had to caution you at all, I would go the extra mile on external isolation before it’s too late. A friend down the road has a back building that did 2x6 staggered studs and you can still hear things like birds chirping outside. I realize it can never be perfect, but it’s embarrassing to ask a client to come back when your neighbor isn’t mowing the yard. -Carson

what you've done there is kind of what I wanna do as well in my backyard to function as a live room for both recording sessions and livestreams and or videos as well. aiming for mine to be around 28 to 32 feet in length and around 24 to 28 width ceiling height around 12 or so i haven't done sound engineering numbers just looking at available space and min maxing the outside location and interior specs after sound proofing interior well

I love the floors! Leave them for your live room and float the mix room.

That’s awesome man, big deal. Congratulations, owning is the way to go, the kids are having a blast :) the open studio is a cool way to go, mines open and I love it, Sylvia Massey studio is open too. So lots of way different ways you can go. For the inso, you could go with a rigid right on the metal with a wooden framed wall with rock wool. Again you have lots of options. Options are always good to have. Wish you the best :)

What a great idea! I went open concept 10yrs ago and absolutely loved it. You've definitely got me thinking with this structure as I'll be doing a major studio upgrade in the next year or two once I move. A few quick questions: Where are you located? Is temperature an issue? I'm in southern Ontario and it can get pretty cold here in the winter. I'm wondering what insulation needs would look like? Cheers.

I'd assume you're planning on building a structure within a structure here? As it currently stands things will get really interesting when it rains.

Cool. I want to do the same. Please document and post as much as you can! I’m curious where you go with the outer walls. I’ve read a lot of studio build books and follow along in specific message boards. If you are trying to soundproof.. they say you need to build your walls with mass in an air tight 2 leaf configuration.. Mass, Air Gap, Mass. So, it might not be in the budget but, you might want to add 3/4” ply or sheet rock to the inside of the outside sheet metal walls.

Wondering how you will approach sound proofing?

I am totally gonna do the exact same except with a dirt floor. I'll have a bunch of folk-punk riot bards record there without shoes. I will also let the neighborhood kids go in when it's not in use and I guess dig around for whatever kids are interested in.

Looking at the location of your neighbors properties I’m surprised you were allowed to get a permit to build that. Especially as a metal building. I had to build mine as a wood building, but it was still a pole barn and it’s the same size as yours. I didn’t build it for my studio… My Studios actually in a commercial building that I own in downtown

Congrats on the space! Kinda of weird question but can you explain more on how you got the plumbing done? I assume you had someone come and design something for you what was that process like? We are building a studio shed in the backyard as well but have not figured out the plumbing process yet.

so happy for you! i am working on something similar. how are you going to insulate it for sound? you seem close enough to neighbors that drums and screaming guitars could be a prob. and i've been cautious about a metal building for the hard reflections and minimum sound blocking. can't wait to see what you do with it, congrats!!!!!

Whats the wind rating for a building like that and I’m thinking you live in a warm state , thought I was gonna see heated floor (pex piping is easy install and cost effective) I own a 40x60 out back on my property , I really want to do a interior build out but I estimated mine to be 80 Grand , -plus utilities are getting way up there . Wish you the best with your project, I’m interested to see how you proceed

bro, get that grade dirt OFF of the steel, i don't know why people do that, but you will rust that metal, i don't care how powder coated it is, expose and always make sure you can see 6" of the footing from the outside, i am a licensed building contratcor
