New Supra - The REAL Reason It Doesn't Have a 3JZ engine
Patrick George of Jalopnk sat down with the Tada San, the chief engineer Toyota and got the real reasons why the Supra doesn’t have a 2JZ. In this video we examine the real reasons why the Supra doesn't have the engine you wanted.
Tetsuya Tada has been with Toyota for over 20 years, and is the man who headed up the BRZ/86/FRS project.
BTW, it IS confirmed that Toyota has started development on the next generation of 86. And it will NOT be a hybrid.
This video references an excellent interview of Tetsuya Tada with Patrick George for Jalopnik.

8:51 - great point made by Tada Tetsuya san. Thats exactly why the Toyota Century (V12/V8 limousine) isn't sold outside japan because Toyota knows that most people wouldn't buy a Toyota badged car worth $100k+, and they wanted to keep it in small production. But obviously, these naysayers who say that they don't mind paying for a more expensive Supra with a 'proper Toyota' engine are most likely to get the car when its depreciated in the used market. They don't seem to realise that car companies need to make profit by selling brand new cars, not selling used cars.

The real, honest reason it doesn't have a 2JZ is that at the GT86 launch, a guy from BMW ended up talking to a few guys, suggesting that they collaborate on a drive train, since Toyota wanted to revive the supra, and he used that as a leverage so BMW could actually get a reliable turbo engine. I'm not even kidding, that's the EXACT reason.
@draconious4005
@draconious4005 5 лет назад
Izayoi Monochrome yep. Not many people seem to know that Toyota actually did work on the engine. BMW may have done the initial design and it may be called a BMW engine, but Toyota did the quality control, taking apart while engines and sending back any part that didn't meet testing requirements. Toyota isn't stupid. They know their reputation is built on reliability and will make sure that whatever engine they use will be able to live up to that reputation. They've done their homework.

I love the Toyota GT86 and it's my dream car for a while. The car was meant for handling and being underpowered similar to its spiritual predecessor the AE86. The Mk5 Supra isn't that bad in terms of the appearance almost resembling the mk4, it has good handling, the b58 engine has been tuned by Toyota to make it reliable and be able to work properly on the mk5, Auto transmission I don't mind but I understand how most of the car fans want it to be manual transmission but I believe Toyota will eventually manufacture the manual model of the mk5. I still don't get it why the fanbois still hated the mk5 as if they want to hate the car for their whole entire life. I gotta say the hate needs to stop but I understand why the 'fanbois' hated it but if they keep hating the mk5 after it's released...well it appears to be that they are just wasting their time. I'm trying to be civil here as I can and trying not to start some sort of heated discussion between who's right or who's wrong. As a car enthusiasts, I still give the new Supra a chance despite the hate its been getting and I hope I can see the Mk5 in person once it's released in Australia👍 Also, keep up with the good work RevMatchTV your posting great content on cars news and updates👍

They probably didn't want a transversal mounted front engine in the 86. The Boxer can be mounted longitudinal behind the wheels and has a lower center of gravity, too. I own a 2013 Scion FRS 10-series.... If you know how to drive around corners and not just in a straight line, the car is pretty damn fast, even in its stock form. The FRS/BRZ/86 behaves really well mid corner, the chassis handles bumps and bad track conditions without getting out of sorts... You can easily modify the engine to get double the factory horse power, for relatively "cheap". My car started with 170 (ish) HP to the rear wheels. With an AVO turbo plus support items (30 PSI), connecting rods from Crawford, head bolts and other hardware from ARP, as well as few other things to make the engine reliable... I also added Hawk brake pads, stainless steel brake lines, master cylinder brace, TEIN suspension upgrades, 18x8" MRR GF07 wheels, plus a few other typical "upgrades". I spent about $10k USD on top of the cars $27k, so I just say $40k in total. What I got for my money, was a 2600 lbs, 450 WHP track weapon. Yeah sure, it won't bet cars in a drag race... BUT for the $40k I spent for everything, there isn't another "new" vehicle you can buy for less money, that is more capable around corners. I couldn't give a crap about going fast a 1/4 mile at a time, for me drag racing is a waste of time and money.

Louis Subearth I don’t know the history of the engine as I never owned a car with one, but I know it’s production was extended for the lotus and every car magazine/show I’ve ever seen always praises the lotus. So figured it would be a great option. However being the owner of the n54 bmw 335i with the original straight 6 twin turbo I could tell you the multitude of common issues found with that engine. From HPFP, water pump, injectors, oil pump and valve cover gasket failure, carbon build up, spark plug fouls to faulty ignition coils, the list goes on and on. Now if BMW has fixed those common issues, who knows. But I can tell you the parts are excessively expensive and I’m sure Toyota owners will be shocked when they get quoted $1200+ for a fuel pump for just the part. Oh you want that installed? $2000+

Volker Hett correct but I feel the amount of build up on my BMW was excessive after 80k when I did all the high rpm driving for 15 mins like you are supposed to, to try to burn it off. Great show, excellent discussion on your part. You answered all of the pertinent questions but I still don't like the new Supra, nor would I buy one. My background is all about cars, My very first car was a 1965 Plymouth Satellite with a race Hemi in it at the age of 16. I then got bored with going fast in a straight line, so a bought a 1969 L-88 Corvette back in 1969. Fun car, but not really suited for the street on many levels, so I gutted the interior and raced it for a while on tracks. I also had a 1969 Camaro Z/28 that I extensively modified. After that I had a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am SE that I modified, but that started to break down very quickly,. Even though I loved the car, it didn't like me at all. Then I had a 1991 Gen Toyota Supra Turbo. Loved that car as well, but I got tired of the live rear axle and it's problems, so I sold that. Then I bought a 1997 Toyota Supra Turbo, which I really fell in love with and I kept that until I got really sick back in 2015 and was forced to sell the the 680 hp beast. Now that my health is back I was really interested in the concept car for the newest Toyota Supra, and if they had indeed made that car as it appeared at auto shows with a superior powertrain, I would have bought one of those. Strangely enough, I plan on soon purchasing a new Acura NSX with the Science of Speed upgrades. For more, the new NSX is very impressive on many levels that are far too detailed dot discuss here. To me, it's any everyday, daily driver supercar. Once again, thank you very much for your great videos.

Toyota should've just followed Prosche's steps by refining their 2JZ engine. Porsche's have been refining their engines from the 60's . Toyota could've done the same. Still a inline 6 but modernise it. A heritage that should use their own inline 6. Thats is heritage.
@chrispalmer3096
@chrispalmer3096 5 лет назад
It's not the same flat 6 since the 60s. The layout might be the same, but the engines been replace over time, not just refined. Besides, Toyota haven't got any other model, nor any variant of the Supra to justify spending money on the 2JZ or another I6.

The real reason is this is just a Z4 with a body kit and Toyota badges. It costs a billion dollars to build and design a car from scratch. Need an existing platform, engine, transmission, differential, and BMW had all of them, they just needed to work out the body shape.

I think GM makes great products I m not a corvette fan, I think they are a good sportcar, hard to beat a 1le camaro, and à fully speced supra may cost as much as a base zl1, I think the car look great but should be a bit more Power or maybe an other trim! Again never owned a supra I don't care about previous Gen they are mostly tuned I wouldnt buy a car and tune it to the bone, Wanted to own one it seems to me like a mainstream sportscar nothing special! You are very true to say that the new Supra is not a rebadjed Z4. I heard from a video Tetsuya Tada said that engineers from BMW and Toyota worked together only upto a certain point where base chassis and drivetrain was set. After that they worked fully independently. He assured Supra will have Toyota's taste with regard to handling and dynamics. I sure think from inside it looks like a modern BMW. Is it a bad thing? I don't know. What do you think?

Inline 6 engines typically weigh MORE than V8's of the same materials. Why? The long engine block actually uses more metal, since it doesn't have the "box" structure of the V8 and has to be overbuilt, and the crankshaft is very heavy. What's more, that long crankshaft needs more bearings and more supports than the V8, which usually has quite a bit more power.

Tata-San built the 86 for race car driving schools, instead of actual customers and price point competition, and the 86's sales figures show it. A friend enjoyed his new 86 until he rode in my 2800 lbs car. His 2800 lbs car had 200 hp, mine has closer to 500, while still being "balanced" with the chassis. After that, my friend wouldn't stop complaining about how his car had no power and he eventually sold it. More power is better and "balance" is a cop out.

I will have to admit and I always try to give credit when credit is Do, so with that, I will say I think your Videos are great, and IMO you do your very Best at giving Unbiased information as a true Car Enthusiast. Which is what we all are if I'm Not mistaken. I've been going back & forth with this New Supra. I look at the Car and just grinch my Teeth at how much it looks like a Revamped Glorified FR-S / BRZ / 86. I remember the Fact it has 10 Non-Functional Air Vents and I just drop my Face into my Hands, shake my Head, and think to myself this can't be the New Supra, can it ?? Then there's also the Fact, that it has no back Seats or a Manual Transmission and I begin to wonder if this is some kind of Bad Dream. But No, this is, in Fact, The NEW GR SUPRA from Toyota and this is what Toyota has given Us and Now We just have to Deal with it. There a lot of things I do like about the New GR Supra like it's Overall Design Theme, the headlights are Gorgeous, it's 50/50 weight ratio, and Honestly, how it gives Homage to the Toyota 2000GT coupe throughout its Design. I believe there are Huge Plans for all of Toyota's Sports Car Line-up and this is just the beginning. The FR-S / 86 is already undergoing changes and being Redesigned and there is also speculation of a New Redesigned Mid-Engine MR2 on the Horizon. So, my question is, How long will this Version of the Supra will Last ?? or is this just a real Quick Production run just to reunite the Supra with the rest of its Siblings ?? ..............................Tada did say he thought the Supra needed a New Story ??? PS. I am a Huge Corvette Fan and even though I haven't checked that Video Out I am after I post this Reply, I will say I can completely see Why you did a Comparison with the new Supra.
