The new 243 firmware added USB audio support! In this video, I explore controlling iOS synths and sampling their audio direct to tape using only the OP-1.
I don't have my OP-1 anymore, but I think there is a Local Off switch somewhere in the COM menu so you can send MIDI notes without triggering the internal synth engine. That would be the cleanest way to do this workflow I think. At any rate, I love this workflow! Thanks for sharing :D
Fabulous thanks. I think I updated the firmware to the latest and will check tomorrow but since I am still experimenting with the basics of the op-1 it will be a magical addition to have it hooked up to the iPad which is where I make most of my audio and visuals. Cheers. Lee
Thanks for the sub! Yea, once I realized I could connect my phone as an interface, I was like 🤯 Been experimenting with Koala sampler with the same idea. I'll prob post a video on that soon. Similar workflow but kinda makes the OP1 an SP404.
@@GavinVickery I have a Sp 404 MK2 and this is going to fit right in there with the power of the iPad audio apps + Op-1 and the 404mk2 it’s going to be fun exploring this set up. Hopefully there isn’t any of the buzzing issues with the OP-1 when it is plugged into this. I didn’t notice any in your video.
@@Dichotomos Oh there's a way around the buzzing that I forgot to show in the video. Hit Shift + Com to bring up the utility menu then select button 4 (OPT) and turn the Blue knob. This toggles the charging via USB on and off. When its off, you won't get the feedback loop when using it as an audio interface :)
I also use this method a lot! If I remember correctly you could also save the "sampler" instrument as SNAPSHOT so you don't need going to the last part of the sample each time you want to do this... ;)
Love this! I need to experiment more with combining other devices with the OP1. Need to see if I can do a similar midi controller setup for Dreams on the PS4 too...
Thanks a lot. It didn’t work for me firstly but started later. Don’t think it’s really useful feature but cool in some cases. For example you are in forest and have only your phone and OP-1 and can play sounds from your phone into OP-1 and mix there but usually I think it’s not really mater feature. However thank you, it was good to know about this way of playing via OP-1.
Cool man. Can you also use the Op1 like a external midi device with analog Drum machine for esample, with the normal midi cable like a beatstep pro or similar ?
I just got the field days ago… My problem is, I can record anything from the op-1 into my ipad pro, but It’s also recording the metronome sound. Any tips? Thanks man.
Hmm, I've never actually done this. But with the new USB audio support, you should be able to receive audio from the OP-1 onto the iPad and record direct into Garage Band using its Sampler mode.
@@GavinVickery that would be super awesome quick way to record jams from OP-1 and edit later and share as finished songs. OP-1 is my favorite portable synth.
Now that you have the SP404mk2 could do a video showing multiple usb devices via a hub into iPhone/iPad. 1. As the OP1 and SP404mk2 have usb connectivity, devices that don’t have usb midi/audio, can have their audio, direct or via mixer.... go into the OP1/SP404mk2/SYNTAKT etc , that would be recorded into the iPad/iPhone. 2. Can you use the iPad or vice versa the OP1 as an external effects send/return ?
This is a great idea, thanks! I wonder if I could chain them like that or not. I don't see why not with a proper usb hub 🤔 being able to use the mk2 as an effects send as it is will be amazing for the OP1.
The cable is just standard USB that comes with OP-1 and the adapter at the iPad end is USB to USB-C adapter. If you have an iPhone, you need USB to Lightening adapter. Plug it all in and it just works. Easy peasy :)
Yes, for iPhone you need the usb-to-lightning camera adapter. I have this one: www.amazon.ca/Apple-USB-C-to-USB-Adapter/dp/B00VU2OID2 and it works great.
Excellent, I’ve mainly using my laptop for sharing sounds, much more refreshing for me on the iPad , as I have different AUV3 Instruments and processing.... what is that connection adapter on the usb to iPad thanks.
Current iPad models are all native USB-C, except for the cheapest entry level 10.2" Model. He's just using a USB-C to USB-A adaptor on the end of a USB-A to mini USB cable for the OP-1. If you have a lightning equiped device like the cheap iPad or the iPhone, you'll need Apple's Lightning to USB3 Camera Connection thingy, which also has a lightning socket on it so the iPad / iPhone can be charged at the same time - this is also needed if the device you connect needs more power.
@@darwiniandude okay cheers, I have an old iPad air2, lighting , but I will get a second hand M1 ,hopefully get a good deal before the M2 wave arrives... I hope the generic adapter works, a lot of non compliant connectors...so if you could recommend one, that’ll be great...thanks a lot for the info , much appreciated.
@@pongtrometer I have the generic adapter for the iPad (USB-C) and it works great. However, I found only the official Apple adapter for USB to Lighting adapters worked reliably when using my iPhone. This is the exact USB-C adapter I have: www.amazon.ca/nonda-Adapter-Thunderbolt-MacBook-Surface/dp/B07XYTHCXV
In the video im using GarageBand, which is free and honestly has an insane number of great synths and percussions. Other than that, I use AudioKit Synth One, Minimoog Model D and HOUSE: Mark 1.
@@GavinVickery cool thanks will try. I was on 242 version and just updated firmware to 243 on my OP-1. Way easier than when I have to update firmware on my eurorack modules.
Yea its the newer iPad, which takes USB-C. I just have a simple USB => USB-C adapter (that small grey thing) for connecting the OP1. The setup works fine with my iPhone too though, which uses the standard USB => Lighting adapter from Apple.
I think most people would have no interest in utilizing a $2000 synthesizer as a Controller for GarageBand. And what I am interested in is how to get the great sounds offered within the OP1 into my GarageBand sessions for orchestration. The OP1 sounds like an amazing instrument, but I have no desire to build an entire song within that tiny little screen.
Who cares what you think? Getting the op1 into the iPad is simple and everyone knows that it sends audio over usb. So this is something MOST people don’t know. Tons of vids with audio going into iPad exist already. No one cares what your desires are either. Why did you post this? Who are you?
@@ForecastGrim I’m aware of that now. I was likely drunk when I posted that. Chill out, how do you get offended by something not directed at you? 🤦🏻♂️
Its the same one that comes with the OP-1, just shorter. Specifically, that's USB to USB Mini B like this one www.amazon.ca/UGREEN-Players-Digital-Navigation-Receiver/dp/B00P0GI68M
