NEW TANK SYNDROME REEF TANK NIGHTMARE?
What’s up TFC FAM! In this video we’re taking a look at the 20 gallon newly set up saltwater aquarium! This tank has been overrun with hair algae. I’m trying to naturally remove this algae by way of a cleanup crew! Maintaining a healthy beneficial cleanup crew is necessary! Hermit crabs and snails will help achieve that goal. Hair algae is ALMOST always caused by an excess of nutrients, specifically phosphates and sulfates. I havent watched your channel long enough to know if you are using RODI water or not, but this can definitely be caused by using tap water, which is never recommended. This absolutely does not happen with every new reef tank, its completely dependent on nutrient levels. Light is a nutrient as well. People often run thier lights too long in the beginning with too much white light exposure compounding the problem. 1. Reduce lights 2. Reduce nutrients through filtration or water changes, keeping Phosphats below 0.10 and check for sulfates. 3. Add a skimmer 4. Add copepods, and potentially phytoplankton. 5. A lawnmower blenny will help. Also, freshwater mollies converted to saltwater will help tremendously! Hope it clears up soon!

Totally agree with this. If it’s bryopsis will need chemical treatment. I’d also recommend an urchin. They will destroy algae like this in about a week, but to your original point, fix the source of the problem. I think this dude uses an RODI filter but his filtration is very much substandard and majority of his tanks are overstocked which just doubles down on the high nutrients suggestion. Even with all that, I do think it’s bryopsis likely caused by adding corals or live rock without dipping. It’s the same reason people get aiptasia. The sad part is, this dude works hard like a lot of people. Invest a lot of money even when they try to do it on the cheap, but they fail to follow the basics like testing nutrients and more importantly for reef tanks - Alk, mag and Calcium. If you are not checking these 3 plus nitrate and phosphates at least monthly, you might as well burn your money.

Throw a bottle of copepods in there like you said! And some microbacter clean it’s a bottle of just bacteria it’ll help for sure cleared my tank up when I had bad hair algae. Copepods are great to have in ur tank as a part of your CUC. Love your vids dude been watching for a while and congrats on 20k finally :)

Hey Cleveland, I have seen some videos where they scrub the hair algae off the rocks with a brush and then use a UV steriliser to stop the hair algae spreading around the tank. Not sure it works, but their videos made it look like they were very successful.

Yep, removing the rocks and taking off the corals to scrub the rocks is what I did to remedy the situation but not always an option nor advisable depending on the coral type and growth.

Thanks for sharing! I know that I will be experiencing this issue will my new SW tank. Honestly, this video has helped me in advance because I would be freaking out and going to the store to buy a lot of unnecessary products. This video just saved me a lot from foreseen problems and expenses. 🙌🏽

Not neccessarily, this is not an automatic situation for all reef tanks. Its totally based on nutrients, keep those in check, and algae doesnt show up. Now... diatoms... thats another story, that almost always happens!

Some people acclimate to salt water and put there simply mollies (livebearers) {and maybe foxface or yellow tang (but is too big to this aquarium)} but I didn't notice know if they help. Some people use toothbrush to collect hair algae; and stabilizate conditions in aquarium and after some time the algae dissapear (maybe there are some chemical medicaments for hairyalgae).

Congrats on the 20k As others suggested, I would acclimate some mollies to saltwater to eat the hair algae. Back in the late 80's when I had a saltwater tank I used mollies to cycle my tank. That was before all these bottled bacteria was around.

Man ive had my tank 6 months zero new tank syndrome at all. I just put lights in it after 6 months and it looks so beautiful and absolutely clean.

I never had new tank syndrome ( this problem ) either. But you don’t until you do. 🤷🏾‍♂️ Who cares though. It’s easy to fix, and isn’t a big deal at all. By the way, good for you though. Glad everything is working out for you. Same with all 4 of my other large saltwater tanks.
