New Tech! * Gold Drop Concentrator!

Review of the Gold Drop Concentrator by Sluice Goose. This fluid bed concentrator is designed to clean concentrates and return either clean gold or very easy to clean gold. Reducing the amount of time taken to clean large quantities of gold concentrates by at least 10 times. This does not replace gold panning, but it sure makes it a whole lot easier to get your gold from your black sand concentrates.

I would upload a video of the new gold cleanup machine but no one sells them yet. Similar, but you can feed it non stop and it spits the gold out into the gold pan while running. Runs fast. And the new drywasher, continuous feeding, run non-stop, no clean out, it spits out the concentrates non-stop. Dump a wheel barrow and run away.

The Gold Drop is a clever and thoughtful design, and well constructed from appearances. But I see a flaw as applied to the fine flakey Thompson River gold. So...the problem trying to separate the fine flakey gold is that upward water flow; even a gold brick would float away given a high enough water flow. But artificial gravitational force such as a centrifugal force would separate out the that super-thin flakey gold because it's density is greater than that of the sands, which would overcome the problem of flakey gold floating out on just water flow alone. The design of the "Gold Drop" separator is *almost* there....but in addition to the agitator jet, it needs a high speed cyclone-spin section to force the higher density (but "floaty") flakes to the outside. This would take some inventor tinkering to get just right in actual application.

My step dad invented something similar to this. He has a pecan picker upper he drags behind his lawnmower to pick up all the pecans. He has a leaf blower attatched to 5 sections of pvc pipe and 2 bins. 1 for the pecans to fall in and the other is for the debris like pine needles, pecans hulls, etc... to blow into.

It is really interesting to see this different concentration mechanics at work! The way I see it, the gold drop doesnt truly separate by weight but by "water drag" with a strong *negative* bias for flat shapes. A wave/shaker table works on friction and mass (with a strong *positive* bias for flat shapes), so it would do a stellar job of getting rid of the round black sand. In a perfect world, I can see a really fast 2 stage cleaning process where the gold drop cleans cons as an intermediate with the primary goal of getting rid of all the the lights + flat/oddshaped black sand. Then run those cons through a shaker/wave table (friction based/density concentration) and you should basically recover clean gold? Also, subbed.. I've been relying on the algorithm for all my Dan Hurd content so far, but I've commited now! :D

Pretty cool product and nice review/guide of how to use it. I'm curious though, it made me think if similar or better results could be achieved for separating gold from heavies, by increasing water viscosity enough via some kind of agent which can be fine-tuned to only allow particles of a minimum specific gravity (more or less) to fall through? Perhaps use a water circulation method to initially liquify and discard the bulk of the very light particles, and then have it fed into the next phase where the heavier particles are filtered via high viscosity fluids.

I think this sort of contraption works much better with tighter classification. Instead of running -1/16 and having a hard time dropping the fine gold taking advantage of the 3:1 gold to black and using a 2:1 ratio a 1/16 to 1/32 class vs a - 1/32 would allow it to pretty much deliver clean gold.

An observation on the return on labor for this day at Thompson River and your time with this contraption: 0.64 grams of gold. Today, May 24 (Victoria Day for my Canadian friends) spot price for gold is about US $1885. With 31.1 troy grams in a troy ounce, a gram of gold today is valued at $60.61. So 0.64 grams is worth $38.80. US$38.80 for all that work. Hmmm...looks to me like you'd better concentrate on your Ocean Picture Rocks! They're bringing in some real money for labor expended.

Engineer commenting: Nice analysis. I'm not surprised at the excellent results. This system is also known as a "Boiler." The trick with successful upflow separation is to limit the particle range. Typically, black sand that is 3X the size of gold will settle near the same velocity as gold. Thus the feed material has to be screened within those limits. (Ie... 100 um gold & max 300 um black sand. Then 200 um gold, with max 600 um black sand..... etc.) Thus, multiple boilers for multiple particle size groups. Of course, one could do in insane amount of computational fluid mechanics, like I have... then include the "Cory Shape Factor" for precision for that ratio of 3:1 to design screening. And every ore is different. The good news with a boiler is that worthless sands get blown out, and you are still left with black sand and gold. If done right, there should be a 90%+ extraction rate. Then, use screens to easily separate the black sand from the gold. This system is more like a very effective concentrator. Then comes the question of tons/ hour. (There are other methods for higher capacities.) I would invite people to send me an e-mail, if they have more questions: danielfsimon@yahoo.com

Trout Creek Mine? I must have missed that, do trout live in there? I'd love to have a mine on a trout steam. I'd probably fish more than I'd mine though or mine during mid day and fish the morning and evening. Some of those trout their markings are just as pretty as nice specimen rocks. You're lucky to be in an area like that. I'm stuck in a huge city with urban sprawl over 6 counties ... yikes! No mining and the fishing is bad too.

Super cool! Maybe not $2,000 cool, but definitely worth a couple hundred bucks and a trip to home depot and Amazon, cool!

I dont know Dan, the machine seems kind of fussy. Seems difficult to adjust the water just like. Kind of like a spiral wheel. Very cool to watch though. Be nice if it didnt let the hematite through. But it is interesting.

I think the cons around here are even harder because all the small creeks and the river down here by me have not only magnetic and non magnetic black sands but also super heavy white sands which are zircon powder and even heavier than the black sand. I think the gold table that Freddy Dodge (Gold Rush) uses works way better with far less hassle than that thing.. The big determining factor would likely be cost. (FYI it's a MSI Gold Shaker Table) The big thing about that table is not only does it shake but it also has dozens of adjustable water inlets to adjust what's going through.. I think they also use pulser jigs too though, but I have seen him use just the table on his own show instead of just panning out the cons which took the guy 48 hours straight to do. -.-
