Session 29: Jesus the Teacher
Reading (All NLT)
John 1:35-50
’The following day John was again standing with two of his disciples. As Jesus walked by, John looked at him and declared, “Look! There is the Lamb of God!” When John’s two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus.
Jesus looked around and saw them following. “What do you want?” he asked them.
They replied, “ Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “where are you staying?”
“Come and see,” he said. It was about four o’clock in the afternoon when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day.
Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of these men who heard what John said and then followed Jesus. Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, and told him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means “Christ”).
Then Andrew brought Simon to meet Jesus. Looking intently at Simon, Jesus said, “Your name is Simon, son of John-but you will be called Cephas” (which means “ Peter”).
The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Come, follow me.” Philip was from Bethsaida, Andrew and Peter’s hometown.
Philip went to look for Nathanael and told him, “We have found the very person Moses and the prophets wrote about! His name is Jesus, the son of Joseph from Nazareth.”
“Nazareth!” exclaimed Nathanael. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?”
“Come and see for yourself,” Philip replied.
As they approached, Jesus said, “Now here is a genuine son of Israel-a man of complete integrity.”
“How do you know about me?” Nathanael asked.
Jesus replied, “I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you.”
Then Nathanael exclaimed, “ Rabbi, you are the Son of God-the King of Israel!”
Jesus asked him, “Do you believe this just because I told you I had seen you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than this.” Then he said, “I tell you the truth, you will all see heaven open and the angels of God going up and down on the Son of Man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth.”
Genesis 28:12-13
‘As he slept, he dreamed of a stairway that reached from the earth up to heaven. And he saw the angels of God going up and down the stairway.
At the top of the stairway stood the LORD, and he said, “I am the LORD, the God of your grandfather Abraham, and the God of your father, Isaac.’
Daniel 7:13-14
‘As my vision continued that night, I saw someone like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient One and was led into his presence. He was given authority, honor, and sovereignty over all the nations of the world, so that people of every race and nation and language would obey him. His rule is eternal-it will never end. His kingdom will never be destroyed.’
Acts 7:55-56
‘But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily into heaven and saw the glory of God, and he saw Jesus standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand. And he told them, “Look, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing in the place of honor at God’s right hand!”

Re your ‘confession’, is this a possible explanation? - Matthew 3:13-17 recounts John baptising Jesus (presumably at Bethabara) and seeing the Holy Spirit descend on Him. Matthew then records that Jesus was led into the wilderness to be tempted. Perhaps it is AFTER those 40 days in the wilderness that John receives the delegation of Pharisees demanding to know who he is (John 1:29-28). The next day (vs 29-34) John sees Jesus again and testifies that He is the one on whom the Spirit descended like a dove (40+ days ago) and that He will baptise with the Holy Spirit and is the Son of God. The next (again) day (vs 35-42) Jesus appears again and two of John’s disciples go with Jesus. On the next again day Jesus calls Philip and Nathaniel. (vs 43-51) A total of 4 consecutive days which possibly took place AFTER Jesus had been tested in the wilderness and returned to Bethabara where John was baptising (v 28). I am not being prescriptive but trying to make sense of the various gospel testimonies.

Hey, sorry to be later with my reply than I would like. I suspect the thing that caused/causes a bit of timeline confusion is the similar language used in various accounts, but you are quite right - there are other explanations. If the anuthors are recording different events, but perhaps influenced by each other’s descriptions, then it can get a bit tricky to unravel them clearly 😆. Happy to have fellow unravellers! (made up word but a good one). Blessings, Hilary

I'm less interested in the chronology of events (although Andy-uk8wv's explanation does sound feasible) than in how opening up these few scriptures has made me think about what it must have been like for the disciples at the beginning of Jesus ministry. They oscillate between mundane questions/remarks and being given mind-shattering pronouncements from Jesus. It's a wonder they don't cut and run! Jesus clearly had charisma enough (well, he would) to overcome their doubts and confusion. It has happened often in history, of course. Fiercely charismatic leaders can make people respond in ways foreign to their nature, even mindlessly, and often to a destructive end. (Bonnie Prince Charlie, Napoleon, etc) And the disciples were clearly men who had been waiting for a leader, a saviour - to free them from the oppressive yolk of the Roman Empire, they hoped. Of course, Jesus was going to disappoint them in that respect. We know and understand now what Jesus' plan and purpose was but the disciples did not have that hindsight.

It was certainly a radical call - perhaps that needed a some testing at the beginning to see if they were really up to it!
