I recently saw a new paper that claims our observations could be better explained if the universe was surrounded by a shell. According to the author, that could do away with dark energy and alleviate the Hubble tension. I had a look at the paper.
The paper is here www.mdpi.com/2...

Review this: "But it doesn’t. If you calculate the expectation value of the angular momentum operator, then that will respect rotational symmetry, yes. But that’s because the eigenvalues, here comes the relevant part, take on both positive and negative values, so they can average to zero. The eigenvalues of the area operator in LQG, in contrast, are all positive valued and have a lower bound. Consequently, the expectation value for the area in loop quantum gravity is bounded from below. It can’t transform under the Lorentz-group. Mathematical fact. Of course Carlo knows this. Everyone who works on this stuff know this. They just repeat this angular momentum story because it sounds superficially plausible if you don’t know anything about quantum physics. Now you can say, alright, the area can’t transform under Lorentz-transformations. So maybe there’s some quantum stuff going on and weird things happen. Yeah, actually Carlo and Simone said that in their paper. And that’s also why some people in loop quantum gravity said there ought to be deviations from Lorentz invariance."

As someone that's been in the academic biomedical research field for 13+ years, I do appreciate these types of honest 'literature reviews.' There are way too many 'rushed' studies being published in the medical sciences (amongst some good ones), just to keep labs funded. I read dozens of them monthly with my literature review students. We regularly RIP papers for overreaching, lacking transparency, and generally trying to push a 'novel' narrative that is not fully supported by their data representation, nor the supportive data. This issue seems to be rampant across many disciplines. I'm loving your theoretical physics discussions!!!!

I never knew there was such a large overlap between comedy and bad physics 😅. It does remind me of papers that I occasionally have to edit where people just make s*** up, misreference sources as supporting the made up ideas when they don't, and then are shocked when their paper is rejected. What's scary is that I occasionally see a number of papers like that that somehow got through the editing process. Perhaps the editors were in a light coma and had a few keystrokes that somehow unintentionally accepted the paper as is. I'm increasingly convinced that what passes for peer-review these days is unfortunately a very low bar.

Sabine has found her perfect format. Peer review is a side of science you rarely get to see happen before your eyes like that... yet it's why science works. More please!

Um - what? How do papers like this get published anywhere?

The journal itself is mediocre, but I know the chief editor and I had some faith in him, probably somewhat misplaced. That said, it gets easier to publish stuff like this once the first paper went through somewhere. Then all you need to do is refer to the earlier paper and hope the referees don't look at it.

The author is a librarian with a BSc in Biology. Maybe he was trying to troll the journal?

On the bright side, we learned something about how difficult it is to improve on LCDM.

This new format is quite good. I like pen and paper and who doesn’t? But what is it with the two microphones one of them so big it looks like a bazooka……..

Please don't make Sabine annoyed - you wouldn't like her when she's annoyed! 😱

I have a solution to the stability problem and was originally suggested by Einsein with Rosen. He said that matter can't be compressed indefinitely as the particles need to reach the speed of light. He is correct because at extreme conditions leptons disintegrate and become radiation. Radiation is a boson and can exist in any intensity. Radiation also acts like a gas when trapped due to momentum revarsal on reflection and as a result can take any pressure from gravity. This what stabilizes the pressure. See these two articles: I would be grateful for any negative comments especially from Sabine.. “A Novel Distant Masses Centrifugal Origin for Gravity” “ A simple geodesic equation for gravity, electromagnetism and all sources of energy”
