Apimaye has redesigned their top hive feeder and we are going to discuss it. The new feeder has a place for feeding winter fondant or candy boards which is a huge plus for beekeepers in the north.

I love this feeder. I got it as soon as they released it. The original ones fit perfect on the 4-frame resource double nuc box (wood, not apimaye)- so bonus! It’s interesting to me that they still had the vents - the bees propolize them almost immediately.

When not using the sugar feeder part in the winter you could fill the left and right sides with cedar shavings. Really, really like the center feeder for fondant and pollen patties.

I plan on another apimay ten frame, two deeps, use the dividers, and use it for raising queens. The old split feeders would be perfect for keeping them separate.

I like the idea of them propolising the vents. I dont like top vents. To keep the condensation from over the top of the brood, i like your idea of fitted foam in the top, including the center. Anything i might feed in the center, in winter, would be hive alive fondant, over which you could put foam. As long as the top is insulated more than the sides, condensation stays on the sides of the hive where the bees can use it. I have two apimay hives and i like it. Thanks!

That intro music reminded me of the music for Datth Vader walking into the command center of the Death Star. The new feeders, great. I've had them on my colonies for a few months also. I'm going to be curious how they work this winter.

Thank you for the video. I appreciate all your content. I also use Apimay and recently purchased their Jumbo feeder which holds 2x the syrup. The Jumbos are great for feeding, but I don't think I want to keep them on during the winter as they reduce insulation. Was curious about your need for additional insulation below the top cover when the top covers on Apimay are already insulated. Have you found that insulation to be insufficient?

Last winter, I removed the double feeders and used a piece of foam insulation as my inner cover and that worked well. I explained in the video why I didn't use the old feeders, the reason for the foam was the outer cover is vented on the ends and lets a lot of air into hive. That's the reason I suggested the foam overtop of the new feeder, just to keep the cool air from the vents off the bees.

I tried to use my "Split" feeders as sugar feeders this year. They never came up. Not sure what the deal was.

I will wait for your after winter review to decide if I should get one. P.S. You need a warning sticker on the top of the apimaye for not putting your hot smoker on it :).

I'll keep you posted for sure. As for the smoker, it wasn't lit long enough to get the bottom hot. Trust me, I think about that before I just set it down. :)

I have these feeders on 6 triple deep hives going into a Northern Wisconsin winter. I am starting to notice condensation in the fondant container, making me a little nervous.

@@jrys23 The hives outside didn't make the winter and the ones in my cellar did. To be honey, after one year, I don't care for the large feeders as much and would rather use the dual feeders. They are easier to remove from hive, etc.The new feeder work fine, but would rather keep using the dual ones.

The feeder I put sugar water in and checked in a week and found a hundred drowned bees. I don't understand how these feeders work.

To prevent drowning- Add a little screen ladder or some twigs to float that the bees can stand on. I use small twigs.

Other thing that comes into play is theft . I would hate to loose 400.00 plus.
