I watched an earlier video of you setting up that furnace and really appreciated it. I was over reacting after reading the instructions which made it seem much worse than it was. Watching you relieved my anxiety and it was a simple set u by putting it in test mode.
Enjoyed the video. I’m surprised they didn’t check the gasses before they called it good. With that much pipe it’s bound to affect the pressures. No harm done just a few adjustments and a hose reroute. All in a good days work.
Great explanation.on water column.on pressure switch and limit..agree with you on testing heat/ cool on installs.and all specs.,but installers have there own minds.here in Texas anyway..
Great video thank you. I would say the installers either need to get a LOT more training or need to be let go. Not setting the GV pressure is only one of many issue I see on that installation.
The 120v supply wiring is not even close to being up to code. Looks like a DIY wiring job there. The manual for that furnace says to set high fire first then low fire due to the low fire regulator being after the high fire regulator in the valve. That is why high fire adjustment effects low fire.
You guys don’t test new furnaces with combustion analyzers? It’s the only way to really know what that furnace is doing, 1.7 and 3.5 is what the manufacturer sets it to because they don’t know the application-duct work, flu etc. most 90+% furnaces I test are only in mid to low 80% efficiency range, this means the customer pays more for a furnace to save money but saves nothing!!
The electrical work needed improvement. Longer Romex, strain relief connector, and cover on the switch box. I have also notice a lot of labels on these units. Lastly, doesn't factory connect the hoses and set the proper pressures on valves?
Good video Ted , This is a good opportunity to get your guys to use Measurequick on all new installs. It’s a good way to commission the unit and hand in the report on each installs. It will get them use to checking gas pressure , static pressure and correct inputs.
"I'm just a heating & air guy." It sounds so bad when you say it that way Ted 😂 And yes I totally agree. Every gas pressure should be checked and set and the gas valve marked, with a sharpie, what the gas pressure was recorded as. And a temperature rise also be done in the ductwork to make sure it's burning within parameters. 👍
If my guys left that furnace like that they would have some serious problems with me. Just because it’s under a house and the customer won’t see it doesn’t make it right to do things incorrectly. No switch plate no romex connector
ideally minimum of 3x pipe inner diameter length before long radius ell. but it's likely not specified on most and many have placed sharp 90's inside for years. I'd think more like some kids(rodents) were playing around blocking it or the pitch is bad and ice forming at the outside blocking it, maybe compounded by short cycling or just bad from the start chinesium component ;)
Just my guess. But the high limit would not trip in low because it still would be in spec in high. Since there is only 1 circuit inline with the high limit switch
Hey ted, I was just wondering why you don't like a thermostat controlling 2 stages of heat? Have you had bad experiences with it or customer complaints? Just wanted to hear your take on it.
Why sell a two stage high efficiency furnace, and then cut the efficiency of the system by installing a single stage thermostat? The longer the cycle, the more efficient the process becomes. You may suffer a little on comfort or recovery time, but makes no sense to me to not use all of the energy savings advantages. With that incoming pressure drop on the gas line I would be concerned. That gas flex connector could be the culprit. Having 10” static pressure at the inlet is way over what you should need. Our utility won’t set it over 7”. If the line is sized properly, it will work with 5”. Maybe the gas utility has the wrong size office in their regulator.
because most will fire at low stage for XX minutes then if there;s still a call for heat, go to high fire until satisfied.. thermostats are the worst device for staging IRL, garbage as they can be products, half the time the thermostats don't even work. too much electronic based junk anymore, chinesium filled homes and life.......
Left my jumper on as well a few weeks back. On a Friday night. The on call tech called me after going there at 11pm to let me know he got my jumper 😣 whoops
didn't catch that in video, but likely that was pre-existing work they didn't touch and used same whip/wire that was there.... not saying they shouldn't have put a plate on it ;)
alternately, look for intake/exhaust restrictions and check motor RPM, possibly tight bearing wrong winding and it's hardly making the switches which could overheat the safety. second to that is the indoor blower running and airflow at acceptable pressure drops? the fools close all the vents upstairs? poor ducting? no airflow over HE's = blazing hot gas temps out inducer. takes me a while to think sometimes ;)
Good video. Do the installers have a check list to go thru and record all necessary pressures, voltage, etc. Also the supply wires are missing the outer jacket of insulation before going into the unit. Installers need to look things over before leaving. Thanks
Yes all installation manuals come with a final checklist. The non insulated wire you speak of is likely a ground. Often the ground will be un insulated
HVAC talk: "I'll just blow this dirt off with some nitrogen, and then head to the basketball game." Town talk: "Look, Ted Cook just came in and he looks like he's been crawling in the mud under someone's house, and then came straight to the game." Hi Ted.
Realtors do not care for my type much. I start my home tours at foundation, Crawl spaces, utilities. They wish i would just look at the shiny new stuff, someone used to mask the actual building.
Are you close to Myrtle Beach.. if so I always go for vacation with the family to myrtle beach and I would like to do install for you at no charge. Than you can post my install on your video .
jose marchante Greenville is 4 hours northwest of myrtle beach... I vacationed every year there as a kid. The change out you offer to do pays about 500 to 600... you don’t have to do it for free and yes I will video it.
too low of incoming gas pressure, regulators in the valve don't work well that low, I'm betting it may go too low or whack out if other things in the home are gas and turn on. it could even go so low the flame migrates into the heat exchanger and cooks the t-stat/fuse and short cycle.... the pitfalls of sparktronic junk, never seen those issue with natural draft vertical units :)
right after commenting, you said no other appliances, so regulator issue at meter, undersized feed, someone globed pipe dope into the fittings/pipe ends, flex connector undersized(seems that way by video) OR they didn't purge the lines and crap is now sitting in the gas valve inlet screen, no drip-legs visible........... yes I may have done that in the past once or twice ;) live and learn
Natural draft appliances also are about 65% efficient at their best, so you are tossing money out the window. Spark ignition is not as complicated as people think it is, this comes down to a basic understanding of electronics which the majority of people lack.
This Law dates back to 1940’s. It has to do with getting paid for every minute worked. Employee screw ups are just the cost of doing Business. Nothing more, nothing less. Turn the volume down. You can’t change the law!
So question for you. So I bought a house that was required to get a new furnace installed before finalizing, this was back in 2017. My question is how long do I've have to wait till it's time for a maintenance, or is there even a service required??
2 or 3 out of every 100 we will find mistakes etc.... not a bad statistic for our volume of change outs.... always looking for perfect installers ... do you believe there is such a thing ??
Want Trey's a my keep I know to keep stinguish back foil in me the worry about me and their need to worry about other people you know you need to go the clash of the teach them how to do the 1st is right for a little for the lever a home Rather he of the be in the classroom when tell these teachers are how to teach students and that a right way and a nonaggression system You do it that way
I am the greatest but I don't put a gas shut off nor a drip leg nor wired it with anything near safe and probably don't have a service disconnect I let my installers hook it up and run without testing anything at all. But I am the greatest because I could come in behind any worker and find flaws
